How we picked and tested
Big, bright display. We looked at clocks in all shapes and sizes. However, almost all of them had displays that were visible from at least 20 feet away in daylight and at night. The exceptions were the three analog clocks we reviewed, which are small and require you to push a button to illuminate.
Dimmable display. Although having a bright display is nice, without the option to dim it light sleepers may be kept awake at night.

Battery backup. If your home is prone to power outages, you’ll want a clock that will be ready in case of an emergency.
Here are other features that aren’t really necessary, but we found available on a few models in this price range:
Radio. Some people prefer to wake up to music, weather, news, or whatever else is playing on the radio. This feature was available on about half of the clocks we reviewed, but it adds to the price.
Multiple alarms. Whether you have two people sharing a clock or prefer a different wake-up time for the weekends, there are several clocks that allow for two separate alarm times.
Multiple sounds. Some clocks beep, others buzz, and some provide soothing sounds for that wake-up call.
USB ports. Whether you use your smartphone as a backup plan or not, there are a few clocks that offer the option to charge gadgets by your bedside.
Bluetooth. Many alarm clocks now have Bluetooth, but not in this price range. Only one of the models we reviewed included wireless music streaming.
We tested a total of 1alarm clocks. Three of those were analog clocks, which were the only models that didn’t offer AC power; they’re completely battery-operated. Six of the 1models tested also included radios.
We tested each clock in a first-floor home office and a second-floor bedroom. This helped when testing reception on the clock radios, because it gave us data from different locations. We used them during the day and at night to test out brightness levels and if they were easy to work with in the dark. We also monitored each clock for accuracy, the duration of the snooze, and if the snooze would continue after one hour.
We think the RCA RCD30 is the best alarm clock for most people. It is the textbook definition of an alarm clock in features and style with an easy-to-use button layout, a bright display, and an alarm that should wake up even heavy sleepers. It’s also the least expensive model that we tested.
Of the models we tested, the RCD30 packed the largest display size in the smallest design, so it won’t take up much room on your nightstand. The illuminated display measures approximately 3.7by 1.inches, which was visible in daylight and at night from at least 20 feet away. The large display size is a boon for people who wear glasses because you don’t need to fumble with your glasses to check the time. If a big display keeps you up at night, know that the RCD30 does have two brightness settings.
The easy operation has a lot to do with the unit’s no-frills design. It has a large snooze button across the top, so you can usually hit it without much fumbling. That snooze also doubles as an hour/minute button for setting the time and alarm. On the back, there are three switches: one for setting the time/alarm, one for turning the alarm on/off, and one for dimming the front display.
The RCD30 is a basic unit, but it has all you really need in an alarm clock, including backup via a 9-volt battery so you won’t lose your settings if the power goes out at a.m. Just know that like most of the alarm clocks we tested, when using that battery the front of the RCD30 will not display the time, but the alarm will trigger in backup mode, which can’t be said of the Mesqool Projection Clock, the Sangean RCR-5, the Sonic Alert SBB500SS, and the Sony ICF-C1.
A Brief History of the Barometer
What started as an experiment in 1640 to prove the existence of natural vacuums led to the discovery of atmospheric pressure. In 1643, Evangelista Torricelli filled a long tube with mercury, closed the end, and placed it in a shallow, open cistern that also contained mercury. When the tube was opened, mercury flowed out and filled the cistern, but then stopped about a quarter of the way down the tube and didn’t continue to pour out. Something had to be pushing down on the mercury in the cistern to make it stop, and that something turned out to be the atmosphere itself, which had previously been believed to be weightless. And so the first barometer was born.
As seen on the right, looking glasses (mirrors) were often placed near barometers and thermometers, as they helped people decide what clothes they were going to put on that day!
In just a couple decades, the instrument became available to well-to-do gentlemen and scientists of both the professional and amateur variety. Woodworkers in the late 17th century took great pride in fashioning elaborate housings for these new weather devices, and it became a popular sign of wealth and nobility to display a barometer in one’s home. The founders of our country were among those fond of them; both Washington and Jefferson made daily recordings of the air pressure in their journals.
In 1840, the first mechanical, non-liquid barometer was invented. It quickly took hold, not because of the concerns about mercury (like there are today), but because of the simplicity of transporting these devices. They were much smaller and therefore cheaper, as mercury barometers had to be at least feet tall for the air pressure to even out the liquid pressure, which is necessary for the instrument to work. By 1900, the mercury barometer was largely replaced by these mechanical, or aneroid, versions, and barometers became more accessible for the common citizen.
Up through the 17th century, making forecasts from the data gleaned from barometers remained a very imprecise science; about all they did was predict storms when the mercury rapidly fell, and no one really understood the science of weather and atmospheric pressure yet. It wasn’t until the mid-1800s that English sea captain Admiral Fitzroy did some extensive experiments with his barometers and came up with the first detailed forecasting tables. He is now credited with starting the weather forecasting industry and he discovered the predictive significance of rising and falling barometric pressure (which we’ll get to shortly). At the same time Fitzroy was at work, meteorologists and weather hobbyists all across the world were adding to the data and the scientific understanding of how weather systems operate and move by trading letters with their fellow observers.
Once the telegraph was invented, and this swapping of information became far easier, weather forecasting really took off. Weather observations and data could now be rapidly transmitted and therefore graphed and analyzed. Forecasts slowly became more accurate, and noting how the ability to predict storms and frosts saved lives and aided commerce, agriculture, and the military, the government founded the Weather Bureau (now the National Weather Service) in 1870. Hundreds of Weather Bureau meteorological stations around the country relied on readings from barometers, thermometers, hygrometers (measuring humidity), as well as observations from the field and at sea, to offer forecasts to farmers, sailors, and ordinary citizens.
Meteorologists continued to use traditional barometers well into the mid-1900s.
It wasn’t until the mid-20th century that computers began to be used in weather forecasting, and the use of traditional monitoring tools like the barometer really declined. While pressure readings are still obviously a major part of forecasts, it’s done digitally rather than by the manual analysis of readings.
While “analog” barometers are no longer employed by professional meteorologists, knowing how to use one is a neat skill to have. And the first step towards gaining that know-how is understanding what atmospheric pressure really is.
How to Use a Barometer to Forecast the Weather
Now that you know the science, being able to forecast the weather is actually rather simple. And while there are some differences in using an aneroid or digital barometer, the principles in measuring and analyzing pressure are the same.
Setting up your barometer is easy. For an aneroid version, you need to manually calibrate it. All this means is using a small screwdriver to set the hand (like on a clock) to match the current barometric pressure in your location (I use weather.gov). Once you’ve done that, it’s all set.
As we already learned, barometer measurements will either be in inches or millibars. Readings will generally be between 2and 3inches, usually measured to the hundredth decimal. Knowing just the number itself, however, isn’t all that helpful. What matters is in which direction the needle is moving. It’s the change in barometric pressure that helps forecast the weather. This means that static numbers with no indication of rising or falling aren’t generally very useful.
So, to get accurate predictions, you need to take a look at the barometer every few hours and see how the number is changing. Keep in mind that changes will seem miniscule; in the few weeks I’ve had my barometer it’s been between 30.00 and 30.30 the entire time, usually only moving.05-.in either direction on any given day.
On an aneroid barometer, you’ll have two hands. One will show the barometric pressure reading, and the other is a manual dial that you align to the pressure reading whenever you take a measurement. The purpose of the manual hand is so that you can quickly and easily see which direction the needle has moved, and how far, between readings:

Then, next time you take a reading, you can quickly see which direction the measurement needle has moved. The current reading here is about 30.1inches.

Pixel Art and Animations
There is also a ton of attractive animations, including several rainbow patterns, an 8-bit fire burning and an image of Tetris. My favorite animation is the one that looks like the old Atari game Breakout.
You can draw your own stills or animations by hitting the Design or Animation icons on the home screen. From there, you can use a finger to select each color you want and draw until you’re content. You can save your creations and upload them to the cloud as well.
The Timebox-Mini’s most basic feature is its least customizable. The digital clock shows the time on two rows, with the hour on the top and the minutes down below. You can change the color of the numbers or switch between 24-hour and 12-hour time, but you can’t adjust the style in any way. A Divoom representative said the company may make different clock layouts available in a future software update.
The Timebox-Mini will not only play audio to wake you, but will also show cool animations on its screen. You stop the alarm by hitting the play button on the top of the clock.
When I tested the thunder alarm, the clock screen showed a cloud with thunder and rain coming out of it. The whale alarm showed an 8-bit picture of a whale swimming. You can also have the alarm clock use the last music file you played, but it won’t show anything special on the screen.
Soothing Sounds and Full Spectrum Light
Tapping the Sleep icon on the home screen gives you a list of two dozen different calming sounds to play while you get ready to doze, including Snow Storm, Thunder, Campfire and — my favorite — City Rain.
You can also turn the clock into a lightbox that displays a solid shade of orange, which is supposed to help with sleep. If you want another solid color, you can visit the Full Spectrum Light menu, which lets you choose any shade.

In my anecdotal use, which involved looking at art, playing music and switching modes, the device lasted several hours between uses.

Scan and Search Speed
This is a measure of how quickly your device can scan through channels. If you have a large number of channels to scan through, high speed can be important. If you are only listening to around channels, look for a scanning speed of about 1per second. If you have more channels to scan through, you might want to consider a higher search speed like 50 or 100 channels per second.
You can use this feature to search through pre-programmed frequencies. This can be a quick and easy way to locate the appropriate frequencies for police, firefighters, and so forth. You will find that it is especially handy for traveling.
