Choose a flat heat resistant surface to avoid accidents.

Trim the wick to about 5mm before lighting to avoid enlarged flame and sooting and maximise the burn time.

The first burn is the most important. Allow the wax to melt across the entire surface before extinguishing the flame to prevent ‘tunnelling’.

Candlewic Wick Choice Resources

It is important that you spend time selecting the proper wick so you can really showcase the fragrances you have selected. The staff at Candlewic can help you with this process and we encourage you to take advantage of their expertise.

Candle Wick Recommendations

Selection of your wick is going to be one of your most difficult challenges in candle making. We suggest starting with Candlewic’s wick recommendations below. The wick selection will be sensitive to the candle’s shape, size, wax, color, and fragrance. We recommend using pre-cut and tabbed wicks for making votive and container candles. These wicks can be cut to your specification to the exact size of your container or votive using our

Custom Wick Builder. In producing pillar and novelty candles it is suggested that you use the spooled raw wicking.

Candlewic has put together the following recommendations through rigidtest burning to help with your wick selection. These recommendations area good starting point but test burning is a must to guarantee that it willwork in your particular application. The wick size is sensitive to theamount of fragrance, color, type of wax and additives.

The Science of the Candle Wick

The candle’s wick is the pipeline that feeds the melted wax vapor to the flame by capillary action. Initially the heat of the flame melts the wax at the top of the candle, once the melt pool is formed the molten wax is then drawn to the flame by the capillary action of the wick. Once the wax reaches the wick a chemical reaction occurs between the vaporized hydrocarbons and the oxygen in the air.

When you take a look at the candle’s flame you will notice that the flame is nearly invisible near the wick and a yellow luminous zone surrounds it. It is near the wick that the wax vapors are breaking down releasing hydrogen and as a result, long unsaturated carbon chains are formed. These carbon chains are actually tiny particles of soot. It is these tiny soot particles that burn and release the yellow light of the candles’ flames. If there is enough oxygen and not too much wax vapor being created at the wick, the soot particles are completely burned up in the flame and the candle releases only heat, light, water and carbon dioxide. If there isn’t enough oxygen and too much vapor the flame is going to release the soot and not fully combust causing the wick to bloom (mushroom).

The Eyes Have It

As decorative vessels make an impact in the candles market, they need not be merchandised with scented offerings. The decision to focus more on the visual and less on the fragrance is the thinking behind such companies as Northern Lights Candles. “Many people enjoy the warm glow of candlelight, but fragrance can complicate a good meal,” says Steve Harriger, art and marketing director. He notices many companies now positioning unscented candles with table scaping decorations to create an illuminated atmosphere without the odor.     This year, Northern Lights will be added to its unscented line with Mega Tealights, votives and taper candles in assorted sizes, along with Embers Square Pillars and Ribbed Zimbali Balls and Pillars. For the outdoors, unfilled Home & Garden Buckets are available in seasonal and year-round designs in two sizes.     Also concentrating on consumers’ desire for strong visual appeal is Flash Point Candle. “I think people are looking for a candle to function as more than just fragrance,” says founder, CEO Drea Groeschel. “Sight is one of our strongest and most developed senses; the vessel becoming a visually stunning statement piece is the obvious next step in design.”     Best known for its multi-wick styling, which are popular as fireplace candle decor, as well as for indoor dining and outdoor entertaining, Flash Point’s candles are now available in a non-scented option. “With a market flooded with overpowering scented candles, we provide a nice alternative with decorative flare,” says Groeschel. Recent line additions include Saxon, Bennett, Hamilton and Beauregard candles in handmade earthenware vessels, ranging in size from 9-inch diameter with six wicks to 20-inch diameter with 2wicks.     To extend the life of its products, Flash Point will be providing ceramic education marketing to its retail customers, some of which will include video segments for vessel repurposing. Possible suggestions include a flower arrangement receptacle, pillar candle display or beverage cooler. “No longer are we as consumers going to be just about fragrance to cover pet odor or kitchen smells, and then throw a partially burned candle jar into a landfill, creating more waste,” remarks Groeschel. “We will want beautiful home decor candles that add value to our lifestyle and be able to use the unique vessels for another creative DIY purpose when the candle is finished.”

Basic Burn Test

Trim the wick to a length of ¼” (mm). If you are testing more than one wick, make sure the candles are clearly labeled.

Place the test candles on a clean, flat, heat-resistant surface about 3” to 6” (7.cm to 1cm) apart. Be sure to select a draft-free spot that is in full view of your workspace. Do not leave lit candles unattended.

Light the candles and record the time. It is critical to keep an eye on the candles while they are burning, especially when testing new wicks.

If testing pillar candles, allow them to burn for two hours then record the details of the melt pool and wick appearance. Ideally the melt pool will achieve the desired diameter by this point. If it hasn’t, the wick is most likely too small. Note any soot or mushrooming on the wick.

Allow the candle to burn for another four hours and record the details of the melt pool and wick again before gently blowing out the flame. At this point the melt pool of a well-wicked candle will have achieved the desired diameter and should be approximately ½” (1.cm) deep.

If the wick is mushrooming, the candle is sooting, or the melt pool is substantially deeper than ½” (1.cm), the wick is most likely too large.

Allow the candle to cool for at least five hours and repeat steps 4, 5, and until the candle is completely burned. The quality of burn will almost always change during the entire burning of the candle. Burn the entire candle before deciding on a wick.

Wax from different batches can vary a bit not only in color, but also in behavior. Once the correct wick size is determined, test subsequent batches of wax to make sure that the candle still burns the way it should and if not, make the appropriate changes to the wick size.

Designs

The taper candle holders are available in different designs. You can choose any design that attracts you. There are simple taper candle holders as well as unique and modern ones. You may also find some giving a traditional touch and feel. All you need to notice is the compatibility of the design you choose with the design of your house or the place where you want to keep it. A proper balance in this regard will enhance the overall value of place.

Candle Holders

Whether outdoors in the summer or snuggled inside during the winter months, you can’t beat candlelight for creating a great atmosphere. We have a stunning collection of candle holders for your home and garden, perfect for keeping flames safe and creating a gorgeous soft glow.

We have a fabulous range of candle holders in a variety of styles for tapers, pillars and tealights. Accessorise your home with chic glass jars, make a dramatic statement with a candelabra or opt for a more minimalist look with a sleek black finish. With a fluttering flame creating dancing shadows on the wall, mealtimes and nights curled up on the sofa become much more memorable.

Goodlight Vegan Birthday Candles

Goodlight is a small, all natural, vegan candle company that offers four different packs of birthday candles in a variety of colors (white, rainbow, shades of purple, and shades of blue). Each pack contains twelve, unscented birthday candles that burn for up to minutes and are vegan and compostable.

All of Goodlight’s birthday candles are made up of 100% palm wax and are paraffin-free. The candle boxes are 100% recyclable and even made up of vegetable-based inks!

According to the company’s website, the rainbow candles are made with non-toxic dyes that make up less than one percent of the candle, but they say nothing about the three other color choices. If you have any concerns about the dyes, you can always reach out to the company!

Resin Drip Taper Candles with Timer

If you were hoping to find something that more closely resembles the traditional birthday candle, then this is a great option for you. These electronic candles are made out of a hard, durable plastic that allows them to last for several years.

The faux-drip detailing on the candles adds to the overall birthday vibe because we all know children take way too long to blow out their candles, but in this case, there will be no wax dripping onto the cake!

By far the coolest aspect of this option is the remote control that allows users to choose between eight lighting options. So when it’s time to blow out the candle, just hit the power button to turn the candle on and then again to turn it off after that big huff! Each candle comes with a single LED light and a set of two AA batteries per candle.

Make Your Own!

For all you creative, DIY types, you could always make your own vegan candles from scratch for a more personalized option! It’s actually very simple to make vegan birthday candles. Here is what you will need:

Vegan wax melts. I recommend using soy or palm melts that are unscented.

Birthday Cake the Vegan Way

Going vegan does not have to mean that you can’t have just as much birthday fun as anyone else. With several vegan-friendly alternatives available, your party (or your child’s party) is sure to impress!

Electronic candles make a great alternative to traditional non-vegan candles with their visual appeal being similar to an actual candle, while colorful or glittery cake toppers make a beautiful addition to any birthday cake!

If you Love Taper Candles

Storing taper candles can be tricky, but these should always be stored flat to prevent them from warping. They are the most sensitive of all the candles and can easily get dinged and scratched, so to prevent that, try wrapping them in tissue paper individually and keeping them in a box or basket. I prefer to use galvanized boxes because of their resistance to extreme temperatures, hot or cold. Lots of people keep them in empty paper holder roll tubes, but I prefer not to keep my candles around cardboard. Personal choice.
