Getting the correct height and size

Measuring from floor to highest point of the bar is a good way to get the correct height on your stools. Take the height that you have measured and subtract inches. This is the height that will be appropriate for whatever stool you pick, giving you enough room to sit comfortably and tuck the stool under when not in use. Our previous blog post outlines this in more detail.

Counter stools tend to range between 2and 2inches from the floor. This is appropriate for counters that measure between 3and 3inches tall. For taller surfaces measuring between 40 and 4inches, try and go for a stool that is around 30 to 3inches high.

Ergonomics

Ergonomics is the application of scientific information to the design of objects, systems and environment, making them more efficient and comfortable to use.

Ergonomically correct and comfortable seating should provide stable body support in a varietyof postures. In addition, the design of the workplace and furniture should encourage a certain amount of movement and changing of posture.

Seat height

This is the most important feature. Your feet should rest flat on the floor without compressing the back of your thighs, otherwise you’ll restrict blood supply to your lower legs and feet – resulting in tired and possibly numb legs.

When you’re working at a table which can’t be adjusted in height, adjust your chair according to the height of your table, lowering the chair until your elbows are just above the table top. If your feet still don’t rest flat on the floor, get a footrest.

Seat depth

If the seat depth isn’t adjustable, it should at least allow you to sit right at the back of the chair without pressing the backs of your knees. You need to sit right at the back of the chair to use the backrest correctly and support your lumbar.

Backrest tilt

Tilting the backrest allows you to adopt different postures, e.g. upright, or semi-reclined. When you sit on a work chair, the angle between your thighs and back should be around 9to 10degrees so that your abdomen and chest are open and not compressed. Opening up more of the angle between your body and thighs lets you breathe better, sending more oxygen to your muscles.

Dynamic sitting

The human body isn’t designed for static postures, especially sitting. The longer you work, the more important the chair movement becomes, such as the ability to recline. It’s better to make small movements in the chair rather than continually fidgeting.

Such chair movements depend on your weight, so office chairs should ideally have auto weight adjustment. If not, you should be able to adjust the tension of the backrest, so that you’re in total balance whether you’re upright or leaning back, and able to maintain good posture without having to exert excessive force.

Armrests

If you’re going to spend some time in the chair, you need to support the weight of your arms. Fixed height armrests are fine for occasional use, but for extended use, they should adjust, at least in height. Height adjustable arms can be lowered to go neatly under the desk when the chair’s not in use.

The best ergonomic chairs will allow you to change the width between armrests to suit your body width, so that they are close to you where you need them.

If the armrests prevent you getting close to the table or desk, you’ll end up sitting at the front edge of seat and not be able to use the backrest correctly, losing lumbar support.

This is also a very important feature. When you’re working, you may need to reach other parts of the table or desk. If the chair doesn’t swivel, you may have to frequently twist your back to reach – not good for your back.

Choosing Bar Stool Height

Bar stools vary in height so it is important to understand which size is best for your situation.  Stool heights are always measured from the floor to the seat not the backrest.

In Australia, we have standardised heights for residential kitchen benches, commercial bar counters and café tables.  In general, bar stools can be classified into main sizes:  residential kitchen bar stool, commercial bar stool and the low stools (as an alternative to a dining chair).

Most commercial venues such as restaurants, cafes, bars and clubs will require 75cm bar stools or 45cm low stools.

Bar Stool Spacing

For seating comfort, allow customers 25cm of leg room between the top of the stool seat and the bottom of the table or bar.

We also suggest allowing 60cm of space between stools (measuring from the centre of one stool to the centre of the next) to allow enough space for eating and socialising without feeling crowded.  This also allows plenty of room for customers to move in and out of seats without disturbing others.

Functional

In some situations function is more important than slick lines and fancy design – for example stools for gaming areas.

The gaming stool is designed to be comfortable and easy to sit in for long periods in order to encourage punters to stay around longer and bet more.

The best gaming stools will have a swivel set with comfortable cushioning and a supportive backrest.  It is essential there is a footrest included and upholstery needs to be resistant to staining and easy clean.

Outdoor

Outdoor stools are an essential feature in our Australian environment and must be made of suitable materials to withstand weathering and UV exposure.

Aluminium and UV stabilised resin and polypropylene are the best materials for an outdoor stool.  Avoid polycarbonate stools and chrome frames as they are unsuitable for outdoor environments.

Extra tip:  make sure the stool seat includes a drainage hole if the stool is to be fully weather exposed – this will allow rainwater to drain off rather than pooling on the seat.

Bar Stool Features

A swivel function allows the customer to move from side to side without moving the base of the stool.  Swivel stools are good for gaming areas and at a bar counter but are not recommended for bar tables.

Be sure to check that you have a commercially rated swivel stool as moving mechanisms need to be very durable in a commercial environment.

Commercial vs Residential

On of the most important features to consider when choosing a stool for hospitality usage is the commercial rating on the item.

It is essential you choose a stool that has been classified as commercial and has been tested by the manufacturer to prove that it will withstand the wear and tear of a commercial environment.

Very Important!!

Check the warranty on your stool.  Furniture bought from general retailers will often exclude any warranty or protection if the item is used in a commercial environment.

If, for some reason, you find yourself in a situation where a customer has sat on a stool, it has broken and they have injured themselves – you will want to be sure you are covered by a commercial warranty – otherwise you may find yourself with a very expensive litigation claim.

The Insider Pick

Bar stools are great space savers in small spaces and they look cool in your home bar. Of all the bar stools we researched and tested, the Winsome Wood 29-inch Saddle Seat Bar Stool is the best because its versatile and casual style will accent your decor without clashing with your current set up.

As family dinners at the dining room table continue to dissipate and the homes we live in shrink in size, bar stools have become a common household item. You may need a bar stool, or a few, for an actual mixology and entertaining countertop you have in your home, or maybe you just need some by your countertop so you can avoid having a dining room table and save that precious space in your apartment. Needless to say, at the end of the day, there is more than one use case for bar stools.

That’s why we’ve compiled a guide to the best bar stools you can buy. Before we get to our picks, here are some aspects of bar stools to keep in mind.

Bar stools versus counter stools: First of all, counter stools differ from bar stools, but if you don’t bother or know to look through the details of a product, it’s easy to get them confused just by browsing product pictures. The common thinking is counter stools are around 2inches tall and are designed for sitting at a kitchen counter, while bar stools tend to be 30 inches tall and are usually thought of more as stools for a libation counter.

Measure and do the math: To find the best bar stool for your home you have to do a little math (sorry) to calculate what will fit best. To figure out the proper height of your stool, measure your bar height and subtract inches from that number.

Spacing is key: Traditionally bar stools are further apart than kitchen chairs, so the number of stools you have in your head when you look at your currently stool-less bar, might not be the number that will actually fit. The general thinking is you should aim for 2inches from the middle of one stool to the middle of another. To get an estimate on the number, you can fit measure the length of your bar and then divide by 2Also, keep in mind that if your bar has brackets under it, you may not be able to fit as many stools.

Seat width and comfort: Then you have to factor in the width of your stool seats, which are, as a rough estimate, usually 15, 17, or 2inches wide. Here it comes down to the question of do you want more comfortable seating with wider seats, or do you want room for more stools?

Insider Picks

Although the Winsome Wood 29-Inch Saddle Seat Bar Stool is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Roundhill Furniture Swivel Black Bonded Leather Adjustable Hydraulic Bar Stool, the AmeriHome Metal Bar Stool, the Winsome 29-Inch Square Leg Bar Stool, and the Roundhill Furniture Redico Adjustable Metal Barstool.

Winsome Wood

Why you’ll love it: The Winsome Wood 29-Inch Saddle Seat Bar Stool is fashionable and it brings a new school brand of economic sophistication to the classic bar stool.

When it comes to purchasing the Winsome Wood stool, you have an impressive amount of options. It’s available in both counter stool and bar stool heights, plus you can pick the color that works best for you with options of matte black, walnut, or natural wood finishes. Also, you can purchase the stools individually, rather than in pairs, which is helpful in case you need three or five, or any other odd number.

As a backless, armrest-free bar stool, it’s economical and can be a real space saver that you simply slide under your countertop when not needed. It also doesn’t scream bar stool so you could easily set an extra one in a corner of your home without completely messing up the aesthetics of your place.

Lumbar Support –

One of the most commonly sought after office chair options. Included in most of our fully-loaded packages and available on most basic task chairs, the lumbar support is essential to maintaining a proper, healthy posture. Most built-in lumbar supports are adjustable. When adjusted correctly, a chair’s lumbar support keeps the ears, shoulders, and hips in alignment and maintains the natural inward curvature of the lower spine.

Adjustable Headrest – Even with the most sophisticated ergonomic chairs, the head and neck is often left vulnerable. An added headrest can help provide all the ergonomic benefits of your task chair to your head and neck, properly aligning your spine from top to bottom and reducing the chance of injuries. A headrest is also a vital piece to when you wish to lean back and take a quick rest from maintaining an erect posture.

Fully Adjustable Arms – Fixed arms are rarely the right height and shape for your body. Height adjustable and fully adjustable arms allow you to lower and raise the armrest height to where is most comfortable for your body size. In addition, many fully adjustable arms feature side-to-side and forward and backward sliding and/or tilting motions allowing you to adjust the arm width and fine-tune the arm supports for a perfect fit.

Forward Tilt and Tilt Limiters – The forward tilt option on office chairs relaxes the bend of your waist, knees, and ankles by supporting your spine as you lean forward. This option is commonly used with increased chair height. The tilt limiter allows the user to set a maximum recline position, holding your back at an angle most comfortable for your body.

Seat Adjustments –

Measure the depth of your seat. Be sure you have two to three inches between the edge of the chair and the back of your calf. Adequate seat depth helps to distribute your weight evenly. Inadequate seat depth can impede circulation, cause numbness and result in difficulty sitting for longer periods of time. Proper seat height encourages you to sit back in your chair, resulting in correct body position with respect to the rest of your workstation.

Lumbar Adjustments –

Stand flat against a wall with your heels and your shoulder blades touching the wall. Now place your hand behind your lower back–does it fit? If you cannot fit your hand behind you, you have a flat back and probably need a chair with very little lumbar support. If you can fit a flat hand behind you, you have a medium curve and need a medium level lumbar support. If you can fit a balled fist behind your back, you have a deep curve, and need a large lumbar support.

Seating Angles –

Check to make sure the chair allows you to sit with a 90° angle in the following places: knees, hips, and elbows. Angles of less than 90° have the detrimental effect of impeding circulation. In static seated situations, this can result in premature fatigue and discomfort. In general, more “open” postures and chairs that support you in “open” postures, will allow you to sit comfortably for longer periods of time.

Motion –

Critical to pain-free sitting is a chair that allows you to stay in motion. The more you move, the more you encourage blood flow, and the less stiff you become. By properly adjusting the chair’s tension control you can achieve your desired level of motion. Rule of thumb: Static positions are a source of pain and fatigue.

Website Trick

On most sites, there is a way to make not picking the wrong height easier. Take Overstock, for example. In the upper left corner when you search the complete listings of bar stools, the first thing you see is Seat Heights (see screenshot below). Taking the information you got from measuring and now knowing the average heights, select either Counter Height or Bar Height, whichever is most appropriate. Now, you are just seeing options that should fit your space.

Back Or Backless

Should you have stools with backs or not? This really depends on what you want to use the space for. If the stool is just being used to grab a quick bite to eat, then you can have just the stool with no back. They also tend to store more easily under the counter than their counterparts (no pun intended).

What Style To Get?

How to Choose a Step Stool

Step stools allow you to quickly and safely complete a variety of home and office maintenance tasks. On Time Supplies features a great selection of step stools for sale, but choosing the right stool for the job can be a little tricky. This step stool buying guide will show you how to choose the best step stool for your home or office.

Choosing the best step stool depend on three key factors:

Three-Step Stools

Best for maintenance jobs such as painting, washing windows and making repairs.

Step Stool Duty Rating: how much weight must your step stool accommodate?

Your step stool needs to safely hold the combined weight of the user and his or her tools. You may not know in advance how much weight your step stool will need to accommodate. Duty ratings offer a general guide.

Pull Quote

To narrow the focus, we set aside stools aimed mainly for kids. (We might tackle that as a separate guide eventually.) The stools we tested will generally work just fine for kids, but they’re intended for use by adults.

We also didn’t consider 3-step stools. If you frequently need to reach higher spaces, a dedicated step ladder is going to more useful and versatile in the long run because it’s tall enough for cleaning gutters, trimming branches and other tasks. If you really want a 3-step stool, our top pick also comes in a 3-step version. We didn’t test it, but it seems like a logical way to go for a height upgrade.

A higher option

The same great build quality as our main pick with an added step so you can reach higher.

As mentioned earlier, we focused on slightly lower stools for this guide, as they were the most versatile for the largest swath of users. But there are certainly uses for 3-step stools that may apply to you, especially if you regularly do work on the outside of your house. If you need some extra height, the Gorilla Easy Step also comes in a 3-step version with a height of 36”. We didn’t test 3-step stools for this guide for reasons outlined previously, but it uses the same basic form and materials as the 2-step and is made by the same people.

If you need a higher weight rating than the Gorilla’s 22lb. ANSI II certification, the Rubbermaid EZ Fold’s ANSI IA 300 lb. rating will support you around the house.

The competition

We used the Kik Step in a high school science classroom for the last year, and its incredible durability and ability to get literally kicked around a room makes it ideal for this kind of institutional use, and we can report it’s done very well under heavy use by teachers and high school kids, who are generally not known for treating school property gently. That makes the Kik Step an interesting alternative for very specific usage scenarios.

This stool from Werner is basically a very small stepladder which lacks anywhere to brace yourself despite the high weight rating.

This mahogany stool from Cosco was too heavy (more than 1lbs.) to carry around easily. As user DoctorLA put it, “Looks nice but the metal ones work a lot better.”

This 2-step stool from Cosco seemed like a good candidate, since some sites listed it as having a weight limit of 22lbs. However, in reality it is only rated at 200 lbs., not enough to meet our criteria.

This molded plastic stool from Rubbermaid has a generous weight rating of 300 lbs., but it’s bulky and doesn’t fold up, which would make it difficult to store.

BR Plastics offers this small stool, comparable in portability to the Adams, but it has nowhere to brace your feet on the top step, and suffered from enough user complaints about fingers getting pinched while folding/unfolding that it didn’t make our shortlist.

Final Word

First of all thanks for reading my article to the end! I hope you find my reviews listed here useful and that it allows you to make a proper comparison of what is best to fit your needs and budget. Don’t be afraid to try more than one product if your first pick doesn’t do the trick.

Most important, have fun and choose your Stools wisely! Good luck!
