How to Make a Snow Globe

It doesn’t matter how old you are, when you shake a snow globe and the snow starts to fall you’re immediately taken back to your childhood and the best thing is they are so easy to make at home. So why not have some fun in creating your own little winter wonderlands.

Nicole and Joanne at our shop at Elsecar Heritage Centre have been experimenting over the past few weeks concocting the perfect potion for their snow globe creations. You need that snow glitter to fall gently after you shake the jar without all the glitter sticking to your decorative figure or scene inside.

Having tried baby oil and then glycerine in various amounts here is their scientifically (??!!!) proven Step by Step guide.

How you do it

Paint outside of your lid any colour you want. Our favourite Christmassy colours are Red, Green, Silver and Gold. Of course you might not need to do this if you already have a coloured lid.

Super glue the plastic toy or winter wonderland decorations into lid, holding down firmly until the glue begins to bond.

Add the glycerine into the jar, about part glycerine to parts water is recommended but we used slightly less and it turned out OK the glycerine thickens the water and makes the glitter fall more slowly when you shake it.

Add the glitter, we used the whole tube (which was the equivalent to 2-tsps I would guesstimate), we also had a few sequin moons which we threw in for good measure.

Top the jar up with water, not quite to the brim as your toy will displace some of the water, and give it a good stir with a pen or straw.

Super glue the outer edge of your jar and tightly twist your lid into place, leave for a few minutes or as long as recommended for your super glue to dry.

Make it!

1. Remove the membrane from the inside of your eggshells.  This needs to be removed so the water doesn’t go all cloudy and you don’t have bits of membrane floating around in the water.  If you have trouble, just soak the shells in water for a while and the membrane will peel right off.

Crush your eggshells into tiny pieces.  As small as they can go without becoming powder.  I used a mortar and pestle which crushed them in no time.

Using a hot glue gun, attach your small toy to the inside of the lid of your jar.  Make sure you secure them to the middle so that the lid can still close when you put it back on the jar.  If you do not have a glue gun on hand, I have used plasticine with success.

Fill your jar with water to the very top.  Distilled or filtered water is best here for a non cloudy appearance.  I used boiled, then cooled water from my kettle which worked just fine.

Pop your eggshells (or glitter) into the water.  It’s up to you how many shells you use and the size of the your jar.

Once your glue has dried under your toy, you can return the lid to your jar.  Screw it on really tightly.  You can add some superglue around the rim of the jar lid if you are concerned with leakage, but I’ve never had a problem.

Give your jar a shake and place it on the table lid down.  Watch the snowflakes fall.  Shake the jar again and again and again.  It never gets old!

You could use glitter inside just as effectively as eggshells.  Although glitter does not have the same look of snow that eggshells do, it does take longer to fall to the bottom of the jar, therefore prolonging the snowfall effect. And it sparkles, of course.

We love making snow globes as gifts over at Frog, Goose and Bear. If you have a credit card-style giftcard, which can sometimes be a little boring to open,  you can actually pop the giftcard into a homemade snow globe for something different!  Or a snow globe made with a toy animal added to a charity gift of a goat or a pig means you’ve got something small and inexpensive, but still fun, to give the recipient. sponsored content kidspot can be viewed on multiple devices a note about relevant advertising relevant to you on our network and other sites.
