In my review of the first mainstream curved LCD TV, Samsung’s UNHU9000, I called the curve “a flat-out gimmick.” And that was after living with one in my house for a month. The curve detracted more than it added to picture quality, and in the end seemed like more of an aesthetic choice than anything else. I don’t think it’s worth the extra money.

Let me reiterate
All HDMI cables are the same. If you don’t have a universal remote already, you should get one. Our list of best home video and best home audio gear has other good suggestions.
How come you never mention rear-projection or plasma TV?
Because rear-projection TVs are no longer on sale as of 2012, and the last plasma TVs were manufactured in 201They’ll be missed.
Unlike dinosaur rear-projectors, I think front-projectors are really cool, and we’ve we’ve reviewed a few. And yes, your TV is too tiny
Surround Sound Formats
You may notice that surround sound systems are referred to in numbers, such as 7.surround sound. This lets you know how many speaker components the system has. A 7.setup boasts eight channels: seven discrete main audio channels, divvied up among seven speakers, and one channel fed to the subwoofer for the low notes.
A 5.surround sound system includes the left and right speakers to sit in the front near the screen, one center channel for vocals, the left and right speakers for either side of your seating area and the subwoofer. The speakers flanking you while you enjoy your audio attack are known as the surround speakers.
A 7.surround sound system has the same basic setup as the 5.1, but also includes a right and left back speaker positioned behind the viewer.
The 9.setup adds another pair speakers to the 7.mix. While the speakers in a smaller setup (in front of, to the side of, and behind you) allow sound effects to freely travel left and right, forward and backward, it takes two more speakers, each mounted a few feet above a corresponding left or right front speaker, to give the noise some opportunity for altitude. Height gives music and audio effects another axis, creating a more immersive experience.
Any of these systems can also incorporate multiple subwoofers, upping the number on the right side of the decimal point. Got a pair of subwoofers? Put them on opposite walls so you receive bass from two directions. Four subwoofers should take up one point each on a diamond surrounding the listener, creating a web of thumping and rattling that will catch anything in the middle and ensure it gets a good shaking. What good do all of these subwoofers do? They even out the bass response and make your movies and music thump a little harder and crisper. One of the first recommendations you will hear from home theater buffs is to add at least one subwoofer if you are rocking a 5.1, 7.1, 9.1, etc setup. It makes a massive difference.
Like a doctoral student collecting new skills, prestige and a series of letters to add to the end of a signature, your sound system can continue to advance into the future. Dolby Atmos, a leap forward in audio technology that breaks from the traditional channel-based system to free the various audio objects in a soundtrack and allow them to move about and come at you in three dimensions—including from above your head—can prompt you to turn your 5.system (one center channel, four speakers, and two subwoofers) into a 5.2.by adding four speakers to ceiling mounts or four speakers that direct sound up to bounce back down toward the viewing area. No longer tethered to a pre-assigned output, these sounds can move to come from the direction that best serves your movie-enjoying experience.
Too much? Your ears (and friends) may disagree, but that’s OK. Keep it simple with a 9.system, creating an encircling perimeter of speakers anchored by two subwoofers.
Must-Have Surround Sound Features
There are several essential components necessary for anyone looking to showcase what a home theater system can do. The cinema-experience-level technology available to everyone these days should get you excited about letting your speakers off the leash to really run wild.
THX-certified standards ensure that the sound being created on the movie-makers’ end is getting its due with the audience on the other end. A production company can pull out all the stops in crafting a scene where a shot ricochets off of a dozen metal objects scattered around the room before hitting the target, but if the system meant to broadcast that intricate series of sound effects is incapable of properly handling the load, nobody’s going to be ducking to avoid taking a bullet to the skull. Be sure to invest in THX-certified speakers—such as the THX UltraSeries from Klipsch, which earned the highest possible certification rating. Boom.
Consider a setup that can best deliver the free-range, real-world-emulating, three-dimensional sound experience of the gotta-have-it-if-you-care-about-movies Dolby Atmos experience mentioned above, including a speaker that bounces everything off of the ceiling, raining down noises and music to soak you with sound effects. We tapped out at a nine-speaker system in our initial explanation of this audio gift to humanity, but the technology can work with up to 34—repeat: 34!—so we’re sorry/not sorry to say that you don’t stand a chance against that level of audio power (but why would you want it any other way?). The Klipsch Reference Premeire Dolby Atmos enabled RP-280FA speaker has a built-in elevation channel that does nothing but blast away at the plaster over your head. Actually, it does do one other thing: win awards.
Klipsch emphasizes Wide Dispersion Surround Technology for all of its surround sound speakers, which ensures the best sound, no matter the home theater system setup. Can’t get fit the speakers exactly where you want them? Don’t worry. You’re still going to feel like you’re in the middle of the action.
Wireless vs. Wired Surround Sound
Wireless surround sound is ideal for people who prize both performance and simplicity. You can place the speakers anywhere without worrying about connecting them to the amplifier or hiding the evidence of those connections.
The fact that wireless systems can hold their own against their wired counterparts is evidence of how far technology has come since sound first electronically made its way from a source to a speaker.
If you’re considering a wireless setup, know that time is of the essence. That means the more modern your speakers, the better. Older wireless systems operated on technology that could interfere with or be disrupted by other wireless signals in the home. They also tended to be more expensive and not as reliable.
Today, wireless technology has advanced to the point that it can deliver the goods. Just know that you will need a special control center. If that sounds intimidating, don’t worry: It’s smart enough to start pumping out the sound you want within minutes of leaving the box.
When it comes to Android tablets, you have no shortage of options — both in terms of hardware and software.
You also have a plethora of hardware options, too — from the aforementioned Fire tablets to Samsung’s wide-ranging offerings to the Asus ZenPad series, to name just a few.
Windows 10, the newest version of Windows, builds upon the foundation Microsoft laid in Windows and 8.The new OS is easier to use on traditional PCs than Windows was, and it makes using Windows on a tablet much more seamless than before. Windows offers several concessions to tablet users, such as large, touch-friendly window controls and buttons, a Tablet Mode (which expands the Start menu to fill the whole screen) and various touch-screen gestures.
Windows remains heavily oriented around the keyboard and mouse, though, so some apps and features may be awkward to use via a touch screen. It makes sense, then, that many Windows tablets are of the convertible kind.
What about Windows-based convertible tablets? Since these devices run full-fledged Windows, you can play a good many PC games on them. They won’t keep up with high-end gaming rigs, but many are more than suitable for more casual PC gaming.
Android tablets pack processors from a variety of manufacturers. Samsung’s Exynos chips and Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processors are the most common: Look for the Snapdragon 800 series and Exynos processors for better performance. Nvidia’s Tegra processors are found on Nvidia tablets, and you’ll find some Android machines with Rockchip CPUs.
On the Windows front, you’ll find mainly Intel processors, including the Core m3, iand iprocessors. Tablets based on Intel Core processors tend to be higher-end devices, and will generally cost you more. Lower-cost Windows tablets and convertibles often use Intel Atom processors.

Whole House Humidifier Maintenance Tips
Benefits of Whole House Humidifiers Over Single Room and Small Portable Humidifiers
Features of Whole House Humidifiers To Consider Before Purchasing
We already looked at the different types of humidifiers, but even within those types, there are variations. Below are the primary features to consider when making your choice.
Square Feet Covered
Even humidifiers that use your HVAC system will have their limits, as the humidifier can only produce so much at a time. It is important that you check the square feet covered before you buy and compare it to your home. If your home has high ceilings or an open floor plan, you may need a humidifier that can cover more square feet than your home actually has.
You can take a look here
First up in our look at these whole house humidifiers is a consistent best seller from the industry heavyweight Aprilaire. This manufacturer was the first to roll out flow-through evaporative humidifiers onto the market.
The 700 is a whole house evaporative humidifier that is good for leveling out the humidity in houses up to 4,200 square feet. Even if you have a large home, the 700 has you covered.
With an evaporative rate of 0.7gallons per hour (GPH), the Aprilaire 700 will deliver up to 50% more moisture into the air than its closest competitor. The reservoir is a generous 1gallons.
Despite packing all this power, the unit is surprisingly compact. It measures 1x 1x 1inches and tips the scales at less than 1pounds.
This humidifier doesn’t come with an installation kit. If you are highly experienced with DIY, you should be okay on this front. For anyone not so confident, factor in whole house humidifier installation cost.
You can control the amount of humidification precisely using the nifty digital controls. Readings are clearly displayed on an LED screen. Settings can be tweaked between whisper, medium, or high. This is a great way to avoid any buzzing or humming disturbing your sleep.
The last thing most people want when buying a dehumidifier is regular and troublesome maintenance. An annual service is all you’ll need with the Aprilaire 700. Look after it and it will last for years.
Some humidifiers will only run properly with distilled water. While this will extend the life of your appliance and ensure that no minerals are belched into the atmosphere, it can be costly. With the 700, you can opt for hot or cold water, distilled or even harder water without a problem. This whole house humidifier even works with well water. This flexibility is a nice touch.
Health Concerns with Whole House Humidifiers
Overall, humidifiers provide amazing health benefits, but if they are not used properly, they can cause health problems. Proper maintenance of your system ensures that it remains healthy for everyone in the home. Also, you need to take care to choose the correct system for you. Below are some things to keep in mind so you can negate any health concerns you have regarding a whole house humidifier.
Whole House Humidifier Brands
There are many whole house humidifier brands on the market, but many of these companies are not well-known. As a result, you can feel reluctant to trust them. With that said, there are a few brands that have built their reputation over the years by offering excellent products, quality service, and dependable warrantees. Below are three whole house humidifier brands you can always trust.
Aprilaire This brand isn’t one that most people have heard of, mostly because it knows its niche—home air care solutions—and sticks to it. Their biggest product line is their whole house humidifiers, so you know that you are getting the best when you purchase one. However, they offer a variety of products to help you improve the air in your home. Some other items they sell include: temperature control, purification, ventilation, and dehumidification solutions. And if you have a smart home or want to switch yours over to being one, they even offer items that are smart home compatible.
Holmes also offers home air care solutions, but they are more of a household name. This is mainly because most homes have at least one heater or fan in their home made by Holmes. Found at most any store, you can easily locate Holmes products. They do not offer a significant selection of whole house humidifiers, but those they do offer are solid products backed by their comprehensive warrantees. At the moment, they are experimenting with smart home options, though these have yet to reach their whole house humidifiers.
Out of the names on this list, Honeywell is the one you likely know best. This is because they offer a wide variety of products and do not restrict themselves to just home air care solutions. You might expect this would result in lower quality products, that the company is spread too thin, but in truth, each division offers amazing products that last—including their humidifier division. And since it is a large company, it has the resources to stand behind all its products with confidence-inspiring warrantees.
To figure out which is the best whole house humidifier for you, you first need to decide the general type of humidifier you are interested in. There are five primary types of whole house humidifiers.
This type is cheap and easy to install if you are looking to go DIY. These are placed on the cold air return line. The motor pulls cold water from the drum and forces it into the system, allowing the natural process of evaporation to turn it into a mist that can then be forced through your HVAC system and into the air of your home. Compared to other types, these are high maintenance, as you must frequently clean the drum to ensure no mold grows, and you must also replace the belt quite frequently.
Flow Through Humidifiers
This type of humidifier offers greater flexibility, as you can install them on the return or supply line. Like the drum type of humidifier, they use evaporation to work. However, they do not use the drum, so there is no standing water. This helps to cut down on the maintenance needed, but you still need to perform some to keep it at optimal function. With this type, water flows through a filter and air blows through the filter to force the moisture out. To use this type of humidifier, you need to be able to hook it up to a water line.
Out of the various types of whole house humidifiers on the market, this is the least common. These humidifiers use a transducer to create moisture. Water passes over the transducer as it vibrates, causing the molecules in the water to become excited, resulting in the droplets breaking up into many smaller droplets, which are then injected into your HVAC system and dispersed throughout your home. These models are rather costly and high maintenance as they produce “white dust,” which must be cleaned away frequently.
These humidifiers are sometimes single room, but there are also models that can cover the entire home. All console humidifiers use a tank of water attached to the unit. However, the way they create humidity will vary. Console humidifiers are high maintenance, as you must fill and clean the tank often. Also, you must set them up in an open space to reduce the chance of mold growth and make sure your air moves enough to disperse the moisture throughout your home. Some console humidifiers are portable as well, while others must be installed much like a window or wall unit air conditioner would be.
Whole House Humidifier Installation
Each type of whole house humidifier requires a different approach to installation. As such, you will want to consult your user manual if you choose to go DIY on this. Depending on the model, installation may be quite simple or complex enough that a professional is needed. Below is a general installation guide, however, double check it with your user manual before you get to work to avoid damaging your product or voiding the warrantee.

Here’s the option you probably know already. Sonos was the first big name in multi-room audio, and it has done a great job of maintaining dominance.
How? The last two small-ish speakers it released are bloomin’ great. First there was the Sonos Play:1, an excellent kitchen or bedroom speaker.
Then it upped the ante with the new Play:5, one of the best-sounding wireless speakers we’ve heard. Its units don’t have Bluetooth, or batteries. They’re not portable. If you’re willing to spend big, though, you can even make a surround system out of Sonos, using a Sonos Playbar, SUB and a couple of Play:1s.
Starts at £149
Samsung packs multi-room abilities into many of its gadgets, including TVs and surround systems. However, there are several standalone speakers on offer too. The ones to check out first are the Samsung R1, R3, Rand R7, seen in the image below.
These are mains-powered speakers with ‘360-degree’ sound, intended to sound great wherever you put them. The Samsung Ris also one of the most eye-catching multi-room speakers available, and sounds great, although the lower-end models don’t beat Sonos’s speakers on sound quality.
Starts at £269
If pure sound quality if what you’re after, Bluesound is where you look. It has easily the best Hi-Res audio chops of the multi-room systems. While you can get Sonos-a-like speaker sets, the range extends into gear that looks like full-on hifi equipment. It’s serious stuff.
With the higher-end boxes you can stream the ‘holy grail’ for wireless, 192KHz, 24-bit streams. Where Bluesound is a little weaker is the software interface, which still needs a bit of work to reach Sonos grade.
Starts at £100
Most multi-room systems are designed to be used only by the manufacturer’s gear. But there is an alternative way, UnDok.
This is a multi-room platform that a handful of speaker-makers use. With any luck a (most likely) Google or Apple-made version of this is where multi-room will end up. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could connect a Sonos Play:and your kitchen Wi-Fi ‘radio’ using the same controller app?
Speakers/radios that use UnDok include the Roberts Radio R100, Goodmans Heritage radio and Ruark R2.
Check the energy rating of the airconditioner you are considering. All airconditioners should have an energy-rating label which uses stars to rate the efficiency. The more stars the better. Also on the label will be an energy consumption box. The lower the number, the less it will cost to run.
You should consider what the airconditioner will look like attached to your wall. Try to choose one that blends in with your decor.
Portable airconditioners can be moved from room to room and use the same heat-exchange principles as built-in models. This means they can cool and dehumidify the air.

Read This Guide Before Scrolling Down To The Ozone Generators!
There are many professional cleaning and remedial services like us out there, but one of the more common solutions is an ozone generator. While they can be dangerous with improper use, they are very capable of cleaning your air better than most purifiers.
As far as our choices below, we work with these in well over 50 homes or commercial building each and every month. We know ozone generators well, but read the entire guide first. There are some basics you need to know and understand before buying and/or using such equipment.
As said above, ozone is not only used to purify homes from odors and mold. It is often used to purify water easily, since it almost instantly breaks down into oxygen because of the water. Generators can also be used to get odors out of cars and car seats. They work the same way, simply power it up in the middle of a car and let it go for about hours.
Ozone generators can also be used in a refrigerator, though you may need to get a special one to run inside by itself. It cleans the food and air inside the refrigerator, going as far as destroying odors and bacteria that may make your food decompose. It ultimately extends food life while purifying the air of your refrigerator.
Green Air Classic Ozone Generator

Ozone Power OP5000 Commercial Air Ozone Generator

It is one of the most powerful ones on the market that produces 5000+ mg/hour for a single-plate generator. It uses a special hex plate that expands the power of the ozone production, which is why it puts out so much.
It is easy to set up and ready to use right out of the box. All it has is a knob, making it an extremely easy interface to use and clean your rooms. It has a year warranty for any malfunctions with optimal customer service. It only weighs pounds and comes in at x x inches.
Green Air Purifiers Deluxe Ozone Generator
While this may be a second listing for Green Air, it just shows how much they know about air purifying. This machine comes not only with a plate ozone generator, but it also has the option of using a HEPA and carbon filter as well. It covers up to 3500 square feet in home or other area with two timers. You can use any of the filters separately from the ozone generator.
It comes with a special remote that you can use to turn on or off the ozone generator or other functions. This easy-to-use interface will make it to where you can easily program the timers, but be sure that you don’t accidentally turn on the ozone generator when still in the room!
Breathe Fresh 5-in-Air Purifier
While not the strongest ozone generating machine, this air purifier comes with five different ways to sanitize your air. It covers about 3500 square feet and can produce 180 mg/hr of ozone. It can also be used as an ionizer odor reducer, PCO filtration cleaning, carbon filter, and UV light sanitizer. It comes with a remote to assist with operation and a large LED screen for easier sight.
It is a 1x x inch box that weighs at around 1pounds. With great reviews and high ratings, this stylish air purifier can measure up to the best. While it’s usually best for only one room, it will still do its job and take the odors or mold out of the air.
A List of Other Products We Tested
Why Should You Trust Us to Get the Best Humidifier for Babies?

Warm Mist Humidifier
A warm mist humidifier contains a heating element that heats up the water before the steam is dispersed. The warm air that is pushed out can help to kill germs and bacteria. Warm air is also said to help the baby breathe easier by reducing mucus. Warm mist is a great option for people who want warm steam in their rooms, this is especially beneficial to those living in very cold climates.
