Essential Oils 101
Aromatic plant oils that are used during aromatherapy are known as essential oils. The name itself is a contraction of ‘quintessential oil’. As the pure essence of a plant, essential oils are naturally extracted and distilled with either water or steam; by mechanical processing of citrus rinds or by dry distillation of natural materials. After distillation, the oil is then separated physically from its water base.
While there are over 90 types of oils listed on the Essential Oil Profiles, Absolutes, CO2s and Hydrosols are also commonly listed under aromatherapy, even though they are distilled via different methods. As essential oils are highly concentrated in their pure form, they are often mixed with a carrier oil in order to dilute them and make it safe for application directly onto the skin. Direct contact with concentrated essential oils may cause an allergic reaction or skin irritation.
Essential Oil Uses
Essential oils can be blended to achieve different healing and therapeutic effects, such as an overall improvement in mood and general sense of well-being. This is especially so during a therapeutic massage, where blood and circulation is improved.

Diffusing the Diffuser
What exactly is an essential oil diffuser? It is so simple, it’s genius. They have existed for centuries really. Historically, they were simple and less than visually appealing; utilized to cleanse a space or provide health benefits for families. Today, however, they range from aesthetically pleasing, to technologically advanced. A diffuser is a “tool” that is utilized to release essential oils into the air; such as those used in aromatherapy. We will dig into the types of diffusers a little later; so you can pick the best essential oil diffuser for your purposes. With our cultural trends leaning more toward natural and chemical free living; diffusers are rising to top of the list for many.
Diffusers versus Humidifiers
There is a vast difference between a diffuser and a humidifier. The most important difference between these two is the fact that a humidifier is used to keep the air moist. Diffusers emit a fine vapor into the air, which allows the essential oil to “cling” or be suspended. Diffusers are made specifically for essential oils; while humidifiers are used with water. While a humidifier requires the heating of water to develop the mist we associate with helping a cold or flu sufferer; diffusers do not all require heat to work. They are referred to as cold diffusers. Both have different goals as well. While a humidifier is designed to help with symptoms from cold, flu, or breathing issues due to dry air; diffusers work to combat problems ahead of time. They can help prevent problems ahead of time, by preventing fungus growth, eliminating bacteria, and generally improving mood and well-being.
In fact, essential oils have been used for thousands of years by different cultures all across the world! Mostly because of their healing properties.

Most plant aromatics can be captured through vaporization. Depending on the botanical, distillation can be done using only steam, utilizing water and steam, or by fully submerging the plant material in water. Here is an infographic outlining the distillation process. You will find that most essential oils are produced this way, including flowers, leaves, barks, and roots.
Examples: lavender, ylang ylang, peppermint, eucalyptus, fir needle, valerian, rose, sandalwood
Some oils, specifically citrus peel, are cold pressed to extract their aromatics. This process involves puncturing the skins of either the whole fruit or just the fruit peel and pressing the essential oil out. With this process, a little bit of juice is extracted, which is then separated from the oil. You can find distilled citrus peel oils on the market. However, these are mainly used in the fragrance industry and not appropriate for aromatherapeutic use.
Examples: orange, grapefruit, tangerine, lime peel, lemon
Some plant aromatics are too delicate for distillation or too bound up in resin, so a solvent is used to make an extraction. The solvents used can be a range of substances (non-toxic and toxic) including hexane, alcohol, acetone, propane, and others, so look for a supplier that lists the solvent type used. That puts the power in your hands to decide if it’s the right ingredient for your needs. In a good quality absolute, the solvent should be completely evaporated out of the finished product. However, because of the possibility of trace amounts of solvent, absolutes are not recommended for aromatherapeutic purposes, but are great for perfumery projects and are alcohol soluble. Examples: jasmine, vanilla, oak moss, oakwood, rose absolute, benzoin resin
First, you want to be sure that the essential oils are pure aromatic plant oils without diluents. Some essential oils on the market are cut with a carrier or diluted with lesser quality products.
Next, to be certain that you are purchasing the right ingredient, look for the botanical Latin name on the product label. For example, Peppermint (Mentha piperita), should be listed clearly.
Purchase oils that are certified organic or are sourced from a supplier you trust. Because essential oils are so concentrated, that means that pesticides and other toxins can be concentrated in the oil as well.
Keep in mind that some essential oils are made from wild-harvested plants or plants cultivated without chemicals, so they may lack the organic certification.
Avoid buying anything with the term “Fragrance Oil” as these are often synthetically produced and are not true botanical essential oils.
Always research the plant part and production method used. Sometimes you might find several different options for one plant, like cinnamon leaf and cinnamon bark or dry ginger and fresh ginger. These will offer very different properties and aromas to your creation. Find out more about Citrus aruantium oils in this blog.
Purchase small amounts to start. One drop of essential oil goes a very long way, so a 1/oz. or oz. bottle will last quite a while! Plus, essential oils can be pricey, so it’s nice to experiment and discover which ones you use most often before purchasing large amounts.
Dark colored glass, like amber bottles, is the way to go. Store your essential oils in a cool, dark cabinet away from heat and light.
Don’t store with the glass and rubber-top dropper in the bottle! Essential oils are concentrated and can break down the rubber over time. Always remove the glass dropper and use the screw cap. The drop-by-drop reducers that come in small bottles are fine and do not need to be removed.
Well…yes and no. We like to say that less is best and use with care!
These highly concentrated aromatics enter through our olfactory system and the skin, leading directly to the brain and our bloodstream. This allows the plant properties to cause changes both emotionally and physiologically within our bodies.
Made from herbs, flowers, spices, and other plants, essential oils play a potent role in aromatherapy, magic, and general wellness. They can act as home remedies for digestion or discomfort, or as ingredients in a sensual homemade perfume. Whether you use them for spell work or housework, there are enough varieties out there to fit just about every need and preference.
If you’re totally unfamiliar with essential oils, be warned: Not all oils are safe for internal or even topical use. Do a spot test before putting anything on your skin and dilute your oil of choice with a carrier oil, like coconut oil, grapeseed oil, or even olive oil, before using it externally.
As far as ingesting oils goes, the FDA maintains a list of essential oils classified as GRAS (generally recognized as safe), and you can add small amounts of those to teas, smoothies, and even baked goods. Regardless of how you use essential oils, be especially careful if you’re pregnant — certain oils may be harmful, depending on how far along you are.

Different Kinds of Diffusers
You can find different types of diffusers on the market. Each underlying technology has its own way of dispersing essential oil and water particles. The results and the impact on the oils is different.
We have a look at the different types of diffusers. You can learn about the advantages and disadvantages of each.
As the name suggests, heating diffusers will use heat to evaporate essential oils. This technology allows for quick and intense use of essential oils.
The problem of these kinds of diffusers is that the oils need heat to vaporize. This changes their consistency and their health effects are somewhat diminished.
Another issue with heat is that it unfortunately can lead to overheating and potentially fire. Heat was used in the past often for aromatherapy but has been replaced by other technologies.
Nebulizers are probably the strongest and most potent devices to use with essential oils. They break down the oil into small particles and distribute them.
The potency stems from the fact that you do not have to dilute the oils. This ensures that a nebulizer will always produce a stronger fragrance compared to any other type of diffuser.
These kinds of diffusers are best for therapeutic use. Due to the potency of the oils they can provide instant relief. They are not that useful for long term use.
Additionally, they do use the most oil of all the available technologies. Over time this makes them rather costly!
Nebulizers are also not known as being quiet. They are quite powerful and that unfortunately means they end up also quite noisy. You definitely don’t want to use them in a bedroom or otherwise calm environment.
Most diffusers you can find today are ultrasonic diffusers. They overall are the best technology at this time to use essential oils in a room.
These kinds of devices need the essential oils to be diffused with water. Many do also act as humidifiers because of that.
These devices have a small disk that vibrates superfast and through that vaporizes the water and essential oil mix. The result is a mist that evenly distributes through a room.
There are many advantages to this type of diffuser. There’s no heat involved making them safe to operate for long periods of time. They vaporize the oils and water due to the fast vibrations.
They also are very quiet in operation making them suitable for any room of the house. Lastly, they also can be built compact so they don’t need a lot of space.
One advantage is also that they can function as a humidifier. They need to dissolve the oil in water and as such the vaporized water increases the humidity in the room.
This is also a disadvantage of the ultrasonic diffusers. You have to dilute the essential oils with water and thus reduce the potency of them. You can always add a few more drops to the liquid solution but you won’t get as strong of a concentration as you would get from a nebulizer.
What is the difference between a diffuser and a humidifier?
The purpose of a humidifier is to increase the amount of water in the air. Depending on how dry the surroundings are, more or less air is vaporized into the air. Usually, the moisture produced is not as granular and fine as in an aromatherapy diffuser.
Many modern humidifiers do use ultrasonic technology to vaporize the water. They work similar in that respect to a diffuser.
The main purpose of the aromatherapy diffuser is to vaporize essential oils. These oils have to be diluted with water in ultrasonic devices. There is some level of humidification happening with essential oil diffusers but it won’t be enough in most cases.
Some diffusers have a mode to run them as a humidifier. Most of these devices don’t have a reservoir large enough to be an effective humidifier. A humidifier will usually have a larger reservoir to produce more moisture in a short time.
Vetiver oil is obtained through the steam distillation of the roots of the vetiver plant (Chrysopogon zizanioides), a perennial grass that is native to India. It has antiseptic and antispasmodic properties that aid in the healing of wounds and scars and provide relief from all types of inflammation.
Known for its woodsy and sweet smell, sandalwood oil is derived from the mature roots of the sandalwood tree through steam distillation. The more mature the tree is, the more potent the extracted essential oil would be.
One of the major sandalwood oil benefits is that it promotes mental clarity, especially when used with a diffuser. It also has a relaxing and calming effect that can be helpful for children with autism spectrum disorders. Apart from that, sandalwood is known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anti-viral properties.
Like sandalwood and vetiver essential oils, cedarwood oil is extracted by steam-distilling pieces of the cedar wood tree. Major components of this essential oil include alpha-cedrene, beta-cedrene, cedrol, widdrol, and thujopsene. It can be used for treating eczema, hair loss, dry scalp, and the inflammation of the joints and tissues.
Cedarwood essential oil can also help children with autism and ADHD. It has calming and relaxing properties. Its scent promotes the release of serotonin, which is then converted into melatonin in the brain. This can help children enjoy peaceful and restorative sleep.
Throughout the centuries, lavender oil has been used by different civilizations for its medicinal properties. For instance, the Egyptians used it for mummification, while the Romans used it for bathing and cooking. Perhaps the most famous usage of all is when Mary Magdalene used it to anoint Jesus.
There are many lavender oil benefits. For starters, it has antioxidants that protect your body from illnesses. It also helps heal burns and wounds, alleviates headaches, and may be useful in the treatment of diabetes. It has a calming effect on children on the autism spectrum and can help improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety and emotional stress.
Aside from lavender, peppermint is perhaps one of the most versatile of all essential oils in the world. It is perfect for children with autism, ADHD, and ADD because it gives a cooling sensation and has a calming effect on the body. It is also known to help improve mental focus.
Peppermint essential oil also has anti-microbial properties that help freshen bad breath and heal digestive issues. It can also help relieve headaches, clear the respiratory tract, and soothe tight and tired muscles.
Ylang Ylang Oil
Ylang ylang essential oil is derived from the flower petals of the large ylang ylang tree (Cananga odorata), which are often found in tropical countries. This essential oil is quite popular for its sweet, floral scent. In fact, it is one of the key ingredients of Chanel No. 5.
As for its benefits, ylang ylang oil has effective sedative, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic, and anti-depressant properties. It has a positive effect on human emotions and can help increase the blood flow to certain parts of the body. It can relieve inflammation and help the function of cardiovascular and digestive systems.
Bergamot essential oil is extracted from the peel of the fruit of the bergamot plant through cold compression. It is often used to reduce pain caused by headaches and muscle tension. It has anti-bacterial properties that can help heal wounds and minimize marks on the skin.
Known as an excellent mood enhancer, bergamot is considered great essential oil for autism. It helps create a feeling of joy, freshness, and energy by helping improve the circulation of blood to different parts of the body. And at the same time, bergamot oil is considered a relaxant as it has a calming effect and can reduce feelings of stress and anxiety.
Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade Essential Oils
CPTG quality testing is done to ensure that essential oils are made by using proper methods of growing, harvesting, and distilling their plant source. It is done through a series of processes that include:
Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Analysis (GC/MS)
In this process, essential oils are vaporized and passed through a long column to separate them into individual components. This is to determine the exact chemical composition of a particular essential oil.
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy
Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) is designed to ensure that each batch of essential oil is potent and consistent. As part of this test, structural components of essential oil compounds are analyzed by passing them through infrared light.
My favorite use for Eucalyptus Essential Oil
I especially like its ability to open up the nasal passages and invigorate the senses. Put some boiling hot water in a bowl, add a few drops of Eucalyptus, put a towel over your head and the bowl, and inhale the steam to clear out your sinuses.
My favorite use for Geranium Essential Oil
Geranium provides an excellent cure for laryngitis. Simply put one drop on a sugar cube and allow it to melt in your mouth. Or, gargle with drop of Geranium Essential Oil (mixed in honey) and cup of cool water.
My favorite use for Peppermint
Add 1drops of Peppermint oil to ounces of pure water and use for a mouthwash. (Your mouth will feel tingly.) To end nausea on the spot, inhale some Peppermint! Oh, and for gas… put one drop of Peppermint oil on a sugar cube and let it dissolve in your mouth.
My favorite use for Tea Tree Oil
Add a little Tea Tree Oil to aloe vera for the perfect antiseptic anti-inflammatory sunburn treatment. Or, place a drop or two of Tea Tree essential oil on a cotton swab and dab it onto an infected pore to kill the infection, speed up healing, and decrease the inflammation.
My favorite use for Ylang-Ylang
For an evening of sensuous relaxation, you can combine a three drops of Ylang Ylang with a drop each: Clary Sage, Bergamot, and Sandalwood and add it to a tub filled with very warm bath water.

Here are some other very common Essential Oils that frequently appear in aromatherapy blends. I tend to keep most of these on hand, but when they run out, I don’t rush to replenish them as quickly as I do the Essential Oils mentioned above.

InnooTech 500ml Essential Ultrasonic Oil Diffuser – Best diffuser for Long-hour Use
If you are looking for a device that will keep going and going throughout the day without stopping at the most crucial moment, then this one should be your top choice. With a water tank of no less than 500 ml, this one has the biggest capacity out of all essential oil diffusers presented in this article.
Most of the time, an essential oil diffuser will stop after hours by itself, simply because it ran out of water. As opposed to those devices, this one can easily go over hours even at the strongest setting. So, it goes on for 8-hour on high-intensity puffs. Imagine how long it could go for if you choose the lowest setting?
This one also has a whisper-quiet technology. So you can go to sleep while feeling the scent of lavender through your nostrils. You won’t have to worry that you’ll wake up with a heart attack in the middle of the night just because the diffuser released another puff.
This diffuser is also great as a romantic night light. The LED lights aren’t too strong, but they’re the weakest either. It’s a “just right” light that will flicker through the room to set a nice, relaxing mood.
URPOWER Wood Grain Essential Oil Diffuser – Best for Improving the Quality of the Air While Providing Style

This essential oil diffuser can take up to 200 ml of water, which makes it not too small, but not too big either. When put on low mist, it can easily spread the aroma into your home for about hours and a half. The mist is fine and smooth, and it will be easy for you to breathe the air in since it also acts as a humidifier.
The dispenser is very quiet, unlike other diffusers. This makes it perfect for night use. It won’t wake you in the middle of the night because the mist is smooth enough to go unnoticed. You will only sense the enchanting smell.
The oil diffuser has a 4-timer setting. Thus, when it comes to dispensing the mist, you can select the 1-hour, 3-hour, 6-hour or ON/OFF mode. It also has 7-colored LED lights which can be adjusted to light and brim.
VicTsing 400ml Essential Oil Diffuser – to Make Your Home Look More Stylish

With its ultrasonic technology, the OliveTech essential oil diffuser is also extremely quiet in its action. Every time it releases a puff, you won’t even know it happened. The only thing that will give it away will be the pretty scent engulfing the room.
The soothing LED light is perfect for creating a cozy mood. You can choose between the 7lights (or cycle between them), and you can also set your desired intensity. A soft light, for instance, will create a romantic and quiet atmosphere.
Viva Naturals Essential Oil Diffuser – Best to Keep Onto the Therapeutic Effects of the Oil
If you are plagued with allergies and have trouble sleeping, then this essential oil diffuser will definitely help you fix that problem. The Viva Naturals will spread aromatherapy oils that will fight the bacteria and stubborn fungi.
The advantage of this ultrasonic diffuser is that it uses less oil than usual, vaporizing it into mist without resorting to heat. As a result, the aromatherapeutic effects of the oil are still in full effect.
This essential oil diffuser is a color show in the room. So, like most of the reviewed diffusers, you can choose the color based on your mood. From a calm moonlight white to a mystic blue or a sunset red, it’s up to you to decide which LED light you want.
Outline nebulizer diffusers
The nebulizer essential oil diffuser is one of the most powerful out there because it doesn’t need heat or water to diffuse the oils.
Nebulizing diffusers have a technology that reminds of perfume atomizers. You’ll have a flow of air that will get the essential oils out of the tube. At the same time, there will be a continuous airflow that will spread the particles into the room.
This natural diffusing procedure keeps the healing properties and purity of the oils. That’s why professional aromatherapists prefer these nebulizers.
As the name suggests, heat diffusers make use of heat to evaporate the essential oils into the air. They usually consist of a tray that has a candle under it, providing enough heat for the oils to evaporate.
The downside of the heat diffuser is that the aromatic effect is rather short and that some of the therapeutic effects within the essence are destroyed during the heating process.
