Highly popular, French-door models combine the drawer-style freezer of a bottom-freezer unit with the low-clearance doors of a side-by-side unit. This means that you’ll have a full-width, double-door fridge with plenty of storage space. With your refrigerator door effectively split into two, it also means that you won’t be letting quite as much cold air out when you’re opening just one door to grab the milk.
With the high demand for French-door refrigerators, you’re sure to find a huge variety of options, including models with top-of-the-line smart features you won’t find with other styles. You can also upgrade the look of your fridge to match your kitchen or even camouflage itself entirely among your cabinets, but be aware that you’ll likely be tacking a few thousand dollars onto the already steep price tag.
Take care of the foods you love
First, think about the things you like to cook and/or eat, then look for features that take really good care of those things. It’s a safe bet that those are the features you’ll enjoy using the most. Are you a devoted foodie who always wants a variety of fresh ingredients on hand? Many models offer sectional climate controls for the different compartments in your fridge or even dedicated, temperature-adjustable drawers. Do you live off of TV dinners and frozen leftovers? Look for advanced defrosting features designed to help eliminate freezer burn. Love a nice glass of pinot grigio? Look for a fridge with a built-in wine rack.
Consider the water dispenser
One trend that we’ve seen over the past few years: creativity from the water dispenser. GE is been leading the pack here, with French door models capable of dishing out the exact amount of water you want, and even ones capable of shutting off automatically once they detect that your glass, pitcher or pot is full. You’ll even find nifty features in GE’s less-expensive top-freezer models — most notably, ones that come with an “Autofill Pitcher” that’ll fill itself back up whenever you place it back in the fridge.
This GE fridge comes with a special pitcher that fills back up with water whenever you dock it into place.
The middle drawer is a popular refrigerator innovation, in part because it can serve as a designated snack compartment in busy households. The 36-inch-wide LG LMXS30746S featured here is the top scorer in our four-door refrigerator category (which includes models with a middle drawer as well as “true four-doors,” with two doors for the fresh-food compartment and two doors for the freezer).
LG’s middle drawer is special in that it features four preset temperatures (29˚ F, 33˚ F, 37˚ F, and 42˚ F) so that you can keep it a bit warmer for things like juice boxes and yogurt snacks, then drop it down on occasion, say, to keep steaks chilled before the weekend cookout.
Another take on the dedicated snack drawer, the door-in-door compartment is a magnetically sealed chamber in some French-door and side-by-side refrigerators that you access without opening the entire refrigerator. This 36-inch-wide side-by-side LG LSXS26366S is one of the few CR Best Buys in our side-by-side refrigerator ratings to offer the convenience. Prefer a French-door? The top-rated LG LFXS32766S has a door-in-door compartment, along with the highest overall score in our ratings.
Stainless steel has become the dominant finish in recent decades, thanks to its sleek look and commercial-grade durability. But parents lodge a couple key complaints: First, most stainless steel isn’t magnetic, making it hard to plaster the fridge door with artwork, permission slips, shopping lists, and the like. Stainless steel is also prone to smudges and fingerprints.
There are, however, new takes on stainless steel that are both magnetic and smudge-proof. This GE Profile PWE23KMDES French-door refrigerator features a slate finish, which the manufacturer introduced a few years back as an alternative to traditional stainless. The darker matte finish holds magnets and hides fingerprints. Alternatively, you can opt for the traditional white or black finish, which works with magnets and is fairly easy to keep clean.
Kenmore refrigerators identified by the brand as having “Active Finish” feature magnetic, fingerprint-resistant stainless steel. One to consider: the Kenmore 5113side-by-side model, which should perform similarly to the Kenmore 51133, a CR Best Buy with solid temperature performance and efficiency in our ratings.
On the subject of family organization, we’d be remiss not to mention the Samsung Family Hub, a French-door fridge with a built-in LCD panel and several family-friendly apps, allowing you to coordinate schedules, display photos, order groceries, and more. Though our initial review of the Family Hub was lukewarm, Samsung recently unveiled the second generation of the fridge, and other manufacturers are launching smart refrigerators of their own that look to digitize the magnet-enhanced command central experience.
With so many available sizes, finishes, features, and configurations, picking the right refrigerator can be a challenge. Let us simplify the process with this quick rundown of important considerations and a sampling of well-reviewed models.
If you only measure one dimension, make it width—that’s probably the limiting factor for what will fit in your kitchen.
Depth can be a factor if you have a kitchen island or a galley-style kitchen, where you might need a shallower fridge (or at least a fridge with half-width doors that won’t bonk into a fixture when they open completely).
Height can matter if you need to slide the fridge in beneath cabinets, but usually it’s the least-important dimension.
Paying more for a fridge (up to a point) does get you extra capacity, style, and convenient features like an ice maker or shelving flexibility. As best we can tell, paying more does not guarantee reliability, longevity, quiet operation, or better food preservation.
But you can get all kinds of different features, finishes, and designs if you’re willing to pay for them. It’s up to you to decide if you want to spend extra for, say, a black stainless finish that’ll serve as the centerpiece for your super-modern kitchen, or a hot-water dispenser that can make K-cup coffee, or a door-in-door design.
While you’re shopping, remember that fridge prices can swing by hundreds of dollars in just a few days, particularly if you’re shopping at Sears. Keep your eye out for promotional deals—you shouldn’t have to wait more than a couple of weeks for one.
Use the yellow Energy Guide sticker as your reference. The blue Energy Star badge is awarded to so many big models that it’s practically meaningless, yet isn’t awarded to some super-efficient top-freezer refrigerators.
User reviews and Consumer Reports are your best sources for figuring out if a fridge is loud or grating or otherwise obnoxious. We’ve only recommended models with Very Good or better noise scores at CR that weren’t regularly criticized in user reviews.
That said, it’s tough for anyone to guarantee you’ll personally be comfortable with a given fridge. Compressors all hum and whine at their own unique frequencies, and it’s tough to tell which combinations might drive certain people nuts but be totally cool for others. (We run into this same problem every summer when we review air conditioners.) And you can’t learn much in a showroom because the environment is too loud and the compressors are rarely turned on. If you’re the type with sensitive ears, best of luck to you.
Consumer Reports has found that refrigerators with automatic ice makers are more likely to need maintenance than fridges without ice makers. Based on user feedback, common problems include cracked water lines and dispensers that freeze themselves shut.
Ice and filtered water direct from the fridge is just the best. The downsides are that a dispenser usually adds hundreds to the cost of a fridge, and the ice maker takes up valuable space in the refrigerator, and it’s one more finicky feature that might need to be repaired. But if you think that’s all worth the near-magical level of convenience, go for it.
Climate control and food freshness
Don’t get too worked up about this. Does lettuce wilt faster in some fridges than others? Or do blueberries mold quicker? Or do venison steaks get freezer burn sooner? Sure. But the huge majority of fridges do their job just fine. The small variance in performance makes so little practical difference that it’s not really worth obsessing about or paying extra for.
If you’re shopping at Sears, check out the Kenmore 7041It has a larger capacity than the Whirlpool and a neat control panel. The user reviews can be rough, though, and several cite problems with the cooling system and related customer-service dickery (though ratings at Sears tend to be harsher than at other retailers’ sites, and the quality of your service depends on your local Sears branch).
At this price, you can pick from tons of 36-inch-wide side-by-side fridges. Most of them even have through-the-door water dispensers. The GE GSE25HGHWW and Frigidaire FGHS2631PF are both well-liked. The thing is, though, they’re side-by-sides. If you know that’s what you prefer, great. But if you want to be able to fit giant pizzas in the freezer or big platters in your fridge, this isn’t the style for you. French door fridges outsell side-by-sides about to these days, even though they’re more expensive, so take that for what it’s worth.
Care and maintenance
The first step to a trouble-free fridge is buying it from a dealer with a good reputation that you feel will be responsive if you have any problems during the warranty period. They’re responsible for delivery and installation, and if those are mishandled, it can cause problems with the fridge from the get-go. And if you do end up with a faulty fridge, a good dealer tends to be able to resolve the problem much faster than the manufacturer’s customer service—even if you’re under warranty.
As far as a DIY maintenance schedule, we like the advice the Repair Clinic publishes. Their suggested best practices include cleaning your condenser coils, wiping down (or replacing) the door gaskets, cleaning the drip pan, and replacing the ice or water filter.
If you want tips on how to keep your fridge clean and smelling fresh, listen to cleaning writer Jolie Kerr.
We also like most of the tips in this infographic about the best practices for using your fridge, like where different foods should go in the fridge, and which crisper humidity settings work best with various kinds of produce.
The bigger and fancier the fridge, the more it will cost to buy. On the upside, some of the latest large capacity fridges are more energy efficient to run than previous models with offer power-saving features such as Eco and Vacation mode.
SUPERIOR TEMPERATURE CONTROL
The fridge door in any family home is opened all the time, so one of the best family friendly features to look for is intelligent temperature control, which automatically adjusts the temperature of your fridge and freezer so that it remains constant whatever the conditions.
Also look out for fridges with electronic temperature control panels, which allow you to set different temperatures for the separate areas of your fridge, as well as ‘quick cooling’ and ‘quick freeze’ options.
Reduce food wastage and keep your fridge fresher for longer with some of the new hygiene and vitamin-optimising features on the fridge market today. Some of the latest models have special anti-bacterial coatings on the doors and walls to prevent unhealthy bacteria from forming inside your fridge, while vitamin-enhancing features keep your fruit and vegetables at their peak for longer to save you money at the supermarket checkout.
If you have an open plan kitchen-living-dining room, or your child is a light sleeper, then you may appreciate a fridge that barely makes a peep when it’s running.

Direct Cool refrigerators
Direct cool fridges only come with single door and the maximum capacity is 350 litres. They are not as effective as frost free refrigerators in keeping fruits and vegetables fresh. The direct cool refrigerator needs lesser eletricity and hence is cheaper in running. The service costs are also cheaper.
They also need to be defrosted, the options are manual or automatic or semi automatic.
Frost Free refrigerators
Frost free refrigerators do not need defrosting as cool air is continuously circulated and there is no ice build-up. Their longevity is more and technically also they are superior to direct cool fridges.
They consume more power than direct cool refrigerators as ice is not formed and hence running costs are more.
Frost free refrigerators are easier to maintain, maintain food fresh for longer duration and have less odor. Frost free fridges have two or more doors as the chiller unit needs to be separate.
These fridges have a unique cyclic defrost system with auto evaporation and hence save around 30% electricity as compared to frost free models. However these are not very common and not suitable for home use as they are mostly in capacity above 350 litres..
Single Door Refrigerators
These are conventional refrigerators which come with a single door. The upper portion is a freezer, the middle portion is a refrigerator and the bottom portion has a vegetable bin. Single-door refrigerators are entry-level refrigerators.
Out of two doors, one door is for the freezer section and the other is for the refrigerator and vegetable sections. They either have a freezer section on top and refrigerator and vegetable sections at the bottom or vice versa. They start from 200 ltrs and go up to 660 ltrs. These are the highest-selling refrigerators and are in mid-price range.
A three-door refrigerator has one door for the refrigerator section, one for the vegetable section and another for the freezer section. In this type of refrigerator, the refrigerator section is on top, the vegetable section is in the middle and the freezer section is at the bottom. These refrigerators start at 300 ltrs and go up to 450 ltrs. This type of refrigerator is preferred by vegetarian families as the vegetable section is quite convenient to open. It is in the mid-price range.
Built-in refrigerators may be models that designers specifically made to fit perfectly flush with your kitchen cabinets and counters and may even sport matching panels. Otherwise, these fridges are the models that have the right dimensions to fit into your particular counter size.
Energy Rating and Efficiency
A refrigerator’s energy consumption is a significant factor that you should also consider. Typically, you’ll see those large yellow stickers that display an appliance’s energy guide. Refer to these guides carefully as they will give you an approximate value as to the energy consumed by the device. Take a look at this helpful video for reading and understanding energy guide labels:
A good sign when it comes to energy efficiency is the Energy Star Certification which the government regulates. A refrigerator will only obtain this qualification if it is “at least 15% percent more efficient than the required federal standard.”
Another factor you should never forget to consider is the fridge’s dimensions. Ensure that you accurately measure the fridge you’re planning to buy as well as the area in the kitchen where you will eventually put it. Measure also all the entrances that you’ll have to go through when you bring your new refrigerator home.
Starting off our list of the best refrigerators 201is the LG LFXS24663S. The stainless steel fridge from LG is of the French door variety with its sizable freezer in the bottom drawer. Capacity
This three-door refrigerator sports a total capacity of 24.Cu. Ft. Of this total capacity, LG’s designers have allocated 16.40 Cu. Ft for its fridge while the remaining Cu. Ft. comprises the freezer at the bottom Energy Rating and Efficiency Exterior Dimensions
At the height of 70 inches and a width of 3inches, this French door LG stands tall and slim while its depth of 3inches Is a few inches thicker than counter depth. Conveniences / Extra Features Besides the dispenser is the white LED with touch temperature controls. This same display will also show you relevant information such as internal temperature, and the status of the door alarm and child lock features. Lastly, the much-loved characteristics of a door-in-door is also present with the LG LFXS24663S. With this dedicated window, you can quickly reach for fridge items without opening the fridge itself!
Refrigerators come with a variety of storage configurations, so you will want to choose one that works best for you. Consider how you want the shelves and drawers to be arranged. You may want to look for one with adjustable glass shelves, which are easier to clean and can be customized to suit your needs. Pull out shelves or bins can also make it easier to access products.
Some refrigerators now also come with door-in-door storage, making it is easier to access more frequently used items without having to open the entire door. This can help to save energy for those who want something more energy efficient regriegrators.
You will need to consider what type of material you want your refrigerator to be as well. Stainless steel refrigerators are quite popular, but they also can easily show fingerprints and smudges. Manufacturers have come up with faux stainless steel finishes, which can help to control this problem.
There is also the option for more expensive custom panels, which can be made to match your kitchen cabinetry, or you can always go with the more basic black or white colored model.
Refrigerators now come with numerous built in features. Some options to consider are a water and ice dispenser in the door which are quite common now, but these often require the most repair. Some other important features are temperature controls and freshness.
The features that can help control the freshness of your food includes dual evaporators which can help maintain higher humidity levels in the refrigerator, while air purifiers can remove bacteria and mold spores. Additionally, vacuum-sealed drawers can help to keep your fruits and veggies fresher for a longer period of time.
Temperature controls can also allow you to choose the temperature of your fridge in different storage compartments. This means if you want to pick a drawer to keep colder than the rest of the fridge for items like meat, you are able to.
Cons of Cabinet Depth Refrigerators
Single Door vs Double Door (Side-by-Side) Refrigerator, Which One is best?
The best model will largely depend on your priorities when choosing a refrigerator. The side-by-side models are easier to access for children or people who are unable to bend down. Side-by-side models might also be best for small kitchens, where space is at a premium, since doors do not swing open as widely.
However, the benefits of space and accessibility can mean there will be some compromise in capacity and energy efficiency.Single door models offer more usable storage capacity than side-by-side models do. Also these models tend to be a bit more energy efficient in comparison to the side-by-side model.
Maintenance tips Keep the fridge at least six inches away from the wall, far from heat sources and direct sunlight. Don’t keep hot meals in the fridge as this increases the load and affects efficiency. Change thermostat levels according to the season and ambient temperature. Don’t keep the door open for more than three minutes. Keep your fridge full but not overloaded for better cooling and lower electricity bills. Cover liquids, vegetables and fruits as low temperatures absorb their nutrition. Keep the coils clean for a more efficient fridge. Use a thin layer of Vaseline as first aid on dried or cracked seals. You’ll have to eventually replace them—this will cost a lot but it will reduce the electricity consumption and increase efficiency.
There are far more variations in height. Broadly speaking, there are counter height and standard height fridges. The former tend to run around 32-34” so they can fit under a standard 36” countertop. The latter usually range from around 60” to 80”.
Fridges can be Energy Star rated, which means they are 9-10% percent more energy efficient than models that meet the federal minimum energy efficiency standard. Most middle to high end fridges will have this certification, but low ends will not necessarily.
Down from panel ready are stainless steel clad appliances, which tend to look and clean up better than painted models, which are how the least expensive fridges are clad.

French door refrigerators open to reveal a variety of compartments. They are a good choice for large families, as the average size is 2cubic feet. They have a

At P.C. Richard & Son, we have a wide selection of refrigerators from which to choose. Come on by and see what we have to offer.
Do not be fooled by purely decorative qualities; such as color. However, the finish of the materials is important; stainless steel is perhaps the best choice in terms of durability and elegance. If what you are interested in is a device with personality in vibrant colors, more like a retro style, you can also get them in the market, but only in specialized stores and these can cost up to three times more than a common refrigerator.
While it is nice to have a water dispenser on the door, do not be fooled by them; these involve maintenance that can become more expense and mean a considerable reduction of the internal storage space.
Innovation has now enabled our appliances to be considered as intelligent devices; with alarms that warn you if the door was not closed properly, this way you will be avoiding the waste of energy and helping to keep the products. New technologies also offer refrigerators with humidity control and cooling by areas, so you can keep your food at the right temperature and humidity level. Among other advances you can get in the refrigerator market, there is the option of an energy backup for several hours, in case of a power failure, this will help to conserve better food in that time frame.

How to properly use a refrigerator
It is important to know and take full advantage of the use of these appliances, not only to postpone the premature fermentation of food and beverages, but also to prevent the formation of microorganisms in them and even reduce the risk of foodborne diseases that were not stored in the correct way. Depending on the type of food this is what should be done for each case:
Meat and fish
They are the most perishable foods, therefore, if they are to be refrigerated they are usually the ones that require to be located in the levels with lower temperatures. It is recommended to place them in the lower drawers or lower parts of the refrigerator so that their liquids do not contaminate other foods and make it easier to clean if it occurs.
Freezing of meat
If they are to be frozen, you should try to remove the largest amount of liquid from each piece for better storage and in the appropriate containers such as albal paper and airtight bags. The maximum storage time for each type of meat can vary from months to a maximum of one year.
Dairy and Eggs
Dairy products should always be kept refrigerated in the central part of the refrigerator and can even be frozen in large containers because their volume will increase in this process. For the case of eggs their refrigeration is usually carried out on the refrigerator door because it is the coolest place in the refrigerator; likewise, they can be frozen without problems, only taking the foresight to eliminate previously their shell.
It can be used to deep clean the refrigerator every time it is turned off to remove bad smells and dirt from inside. Likewise, it is suggested to periodically shut down refrigerators whose freezing areas accumulate ice, thus preventing large amounts of ice from forming and cleaning becomes more complicated.
