What Are Some of The Benefits of Using An Over The Range Microwave?
You may be wondering why you should spend your time looking for an over the range microwave while the normal microwaves are readily available and perhaps even cheaper. Well, we would at this moment like to inform you that there are several reasons why you should buy an over the range microwave and forget about the regular microwaves.
The Power Rating
The rate at which the microwave that you want to buy consumes power is very important in making a decision when purchasing one. There are those of you who would want to pay less electricity bills hence would like to go for those microwaves with less power ratings.
Microwaves with more electricity ratings have more power and cook the food faster and evenly. If you want to cook faster, then you will have to go for those with more power ratings. Buying a 1000 watt microwave should just work perfectly well for you.
Size of The Microwave
While size may not be considered as a very vital factor in choosing your microwave, there are times when size can break the deal and help you make an informed choice. It is good to measure the space above the range before deciding to buy a particular over the range microwave.
You need to take several measurements to get a microwave that will perfectly fit in your kitchen. You don’t want to end up buying a small over the range microwave only to realize that there is a lot of space left unused or vice-versa.
The Microwave Technology Applied
Under the microwave technology, we can group microwaves into the convention and conventional microwaves. Conventional microwaves normally cook the food by passing the microwaves through the food containers.
Convention microwaves, on the other hand, rely on the same technology while incorporating radiant heat together with a fan that moves the warm air entirely inside the microwave.
Some other microwave models have the convention mode that can allow for browning or roasting as per someone’s wishes. Depending on what you want to use the microwave for, you must consider the type of technology to get one that will suit your needs.
Depending on one’s preferences, some additional features may come in handy in making it easier to use your microwave. If you fancy these features, then you should make sure that your microwave has them
Some of the additional features to consider include a second rack, heat sensitive technology, one-touch control features among others. There is no harm in considering pre-set features such as baked potato, frozen dinner, defrost and popcorn as well.

OTR microwaves have so many advantages over the countertop microwaves. This is why we so desperately need them in our kitchens. If you were planning on acquiring one soon, you can now go ahead and do so believing that this article has equipped with all you need to know.
The best over the range microwave must include some features as has already been discussed in this article. All the five microwaves that we discussed above will work perfectly well for you so you can buy any. However, the LG LMV1683ST Over-The-Range Microwave Oven with 300 CFM Venting System, 1.Cubic Feet is the overall best because of its several outstanding features.
It is best in defrosting food, cooks food evenly, prevents accidental starts by having a keypad lock feature and is also powerful. We would, therefore, like to recommend it based on the above features.
Are you currently using an over the counter microwave? Which model are you using? Have you ever used any of the models that we have discussed above?
You install this style of microwave above your range, which will save you some counter space. These models have vent systems that take the place of the oven hood and lights to illuminate your cooktop.
Internal capacity: Less than cubic foot to more than cubic feet
Built-in models that you place among custom cabinets or paired with built-in, full-sized wall oven are the most high-end (aka expensive) types of microwaves. Some microwaves in this category are even designed specifically as drawers with a compartment you pull out for your food.
External dimensions: varies widely depending on type, drawers tend to have more depth than countertop or over-the-range models, about 15x30x26
Internal capacity: Less than cubic foot to more than cubic feet
Microwave wattage equals power. In general, the higher the wattage, the faster and more evenly your food will cook. Most microwaves sit somewhere between 600-1,200 watts. Larger, more expensive microwaves tend to have a higher wattage, so this is a price and size consideration that can strongly influence microwave cooking performance.
Many microwaves share common functions. Here are some microwave cooking essentials: cook time, defrost, power level and timer. Each one requires your direct input, but they are usually very easy to set. Most microwaves have touch panel controls and a rotating carousel to spin your food for more even cooking.
Many microwaves come with preset cooking modes so you only have to press one button to automatically cook a dish. For example, many microwaves have a “popcorn” button that will cook your bag based on factory settings. This can be handy for common dishes you heat in the microwave, but you’ll have to figure out if the microwave’s default cook times work for your own food. Other common presets include: baked potato, pizza, beverage, frozen dinner and reheat.
Manufacturers are increasingly including features in microwaves that mimic what we see in full-size ovens, such as a broiler. This is a good addition for finishing off a dish or cooking something for which you’d prefer more direct heat.
A convection fan that’s built into the back of a microwave oven circulates the heat around the food to cook things more quickly and evenly. (Many new full-size ovens come with at least one convection fan.) However, microwaves with convection fans are generally more expensive than those without.
Inverter heating is another option available on some high-end models. If you want to heat something at a 50 percent power level, most microwaves actually switch between 100 percent power and 0 percent power to average in at 50 percent power. This doesn’t yield great results if you want to heat something on a lower heat and achieve an even result. So, some models now use inverter technology, which maintains a consistent 50 percent power. That way, you can poach salmon, make a fluffy omelet, etc.
Sensors mainly boost an OTR microwave’s heating accuracy for the best results. The sensors present in the microwave adjust the power supply accordingly so that the moisture coming from your food will match the necessary heat supply.
These sensors are used mainly as a device that assists other functions as it gives an indicator on the condition of the microwave’s humidity.
2.cu. ft. of internal space. Despite the difference in dimensions, this unit provides a great amount of space internally. one of the few here with over cu. ft. of space.
Smart Sensor: Let the machine cook what you want to perfection.
Trim kit included with the unit.
Another from Whirlpool, this time a microwave for the countertop. As a countertop unit, this oven takes less space than the GE unit above. So for those of you looking for a good quality microwave with great space efficiency, then this will take the cake. This unit comes in options of black, white and stainless steel. As you can tell, however, the front of the unit is not steel, but a plastic screen. This screen, unlike the metal around it, is far more prone to grime and is a shame it covers the front. *A trim kit is available for this unit but is sold separately.
Why you want Higher Wattage
Unlike conventional electronic standards where low wattage and high efficiency is king, microwaves are different. This is because wattage determines the heating power and time of the oven. The higher the wattage, the faster the oven heats up the food. If the wattage is low, then the microwave will take longer to heat up your food. As such, it is always preferred to get a high powered oven to lower the wait time.
Convection Microwave Oven
Different from your conventional unit, these convection ovens boast not only microwave capabilities but convection capabilities. What does this mean? Well, a convection oven has a fan and venting system, which can be turned on in order to move the heat inside the oven around. This movement of hot air helps heat the food up faster and more evenly, making for a more efficient oven. Also, unlike conventional ovens which often have hot spots which are places where heat is more concentrated, convection ovens do not.
Convection Ovens have ventilation inside, helping with the heating process.
As one could imagine, The Convection settings make your Microwave into a sort of true mini oven, capable of handling some baking and toasting. In a sense, the unit is no longer just a microwave, but an all in one oven unit. As a real mini oven, this unit is better suited for food with lower water quantities, or thick pieces of meat which would be ruined in a conventional microwave unit.
In Cabinet Options
Another option that seems forgotten by many when shopping. While in cabinet microwaves still require dedicated space like regular countertop units, if you value countertop space more than cabinet space this side option is something worth considering. These can work with convection ovens but will require venting. As such, it is advised to get an over the range convection unit instead.
Over the Range Microwave Oven
Not everyone likes the space hogging that Microwaves are known for. After all, some can be as wide as your real oven, so having them on your countertop is not always an ideal place. Thankfully, for those of you who want to conserve space in your kitchen, the Over the Range Microwave Oven is your best bet. Not only does it get to hang above your oven range, saving precious countertop space for toasters, blenders and such, but it can replace your venting fan as well. Therefore, an over the range microwave unit is, in a way, two essential things in one compact unit.
Over the Range units, unlike the countertop units, do not require space around it for venting heat. Instead, most require a vent duct in order to cool down after heating food up. A few however also come with hidden vents on the oven unit for those of you without a venting duct. Some also have automated systems to regulate the temperature inside and outside the microwave oven. Convenient, right?
Carbon Filters & Maintenance *Please note: Not all microwaves will come with a filter pre-installed. you may need to purchase one along with the unit. Make sure that the filter fits your unit as well, as there may be differences in size
However, Harvard.Edu that always backed by facts seems to be ok with using a microwave as a mean of cooking. It states that less cooking time actually preserves vitamin C and other nutrients from breaking down. and another post by harvard.edu states that, contrary to popular belief, some Styrofoam and other polystyrene containers can safely be used in the microwave. Just follow the same rules you follow for other plastic containers: check the label.
If you are concerned about plastic wraps or containers in the microwave, transfer the food to glass or ceramic containers labeled for safe use in microwave ovens.
Don’t skip this one!
5. Functionality (are there pre-programmed functions and custom functions?)
Shortcuts not only save time but also give you ease of mind.
Most of the microwaves on our list have to pre-programmed functions, like Defrost.
The more advanced microwaves have sensors that can detect the meal’s condition and give you the best calculation on how long to run the microwave.
GE Profile PT7800SHSS.
Our review ends here, but before we part ways, I just want to remind you that whatever microwave oven you choose, it will surely bring blessings to your home in the form of warm meals. do you interested more in colored microwave? please check out our review about best red microwave. you will meet many cute microwaves there.
Watch how an OTR microwave is installed in this video.
OTR microwaves are more expensive than countertop models but more affordable than built-in models. The price may range from anywhere a couple of hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars. The capacity may also vary from 0.to 2.0 cubic feet.
Most OTR microwaves are made with a stainless steel finish to give a sleek design. Their wattage is pretty high between 850 to 1,200, so they’re an excellent choice for speed and convenience.
Design And Vent Features
The design of the microwave is important for convenience and style. To see what’s cooking inside, the microwave should have an interior light.
A turntable is essential to cook food evenly. If you want your kitchen to be color coordinated, look for a microwave that offers multiple color options.
For more cooking versatility, shelves and racks are important accessories to consider. If you do many stovetop cooking, look for exhaust features. The best designs offer dual options: internal and external venting features. The standard cubic feet per minute (CFM) rating of the fan is 300.
Preset programs allow you to select the right time and temperature to cook a certain food. Most microwaves have preset programs to cook popular foods and beverages, like pizza, hot dogs, and hot drinks. Some preset programs include defrost and melt.
GE JVM3160RFSS 30” Over-The-Range Microwave Oven
The GE JVM3160RFSS has a large 1.cubic feet capacity and 1,000 watts’ power. It features power levels and six one-touch settings including popcorn, beverage, and potato.
For optimum result, you can automatically or manually set the time for defrosting accordingly.
To remove any smoke and odor from your kitchen, 300-CFM exhaust fan is designed for two different speeds. The microwave is also designed with an on/off turntable for easy operation.
This one is a big one for me as a cook. I love the convenience of storage while cooking right in front of me. A lot of the time I will be using the oven and stove top (finishing sides and what not) when I need to rest something typically a meat. Having a microwave right at my head level allows me to plate and rest in the microwave without taking up any countertop space while finishing up your cooking. Newer microwaves allow for broiling and other uses as well that come in very handy around the holiday with lots of desserts and casseroles to be cooked.
Microwaves Features and Performance
The functionality of a microwave has advanced far from the turn the dial for the time you want to nuke your food and ding when times up. Some microwaves have the ability to judge the moisture in foods and adjust to cook the food properly. Defrosting has become an art, and better microwaves have multiple options including defrost by weight, by a sensor, and by food types or a combination of all three. Add in extra functions such as baking or broiling there is a wide range of features we look for with microwave features.
Most brands will give an area size as to how powerful the ventilation system is. An example is our top model can ventilate a 400 cubic feet area per minute. We have used a lot of consumer reports data, however, to make sure that the manufacturer is not over promising on the ventilation ability. We gave bonus points for microwaves that had multiple fan setting, and some even start automatically when the area below gets too smoky.
With most kitchens focusing on the oven and stovetop area the over the range microwave will be right in the center of your kitchen. We look at the design for not only functionality but also sleek or elegant design to not be a sore eye in the focal point of the kitchen.
LG did not skimp on the microwave features with this model. A touch pad control panel that is smudge proof immediately starts you off right with your microwave experience. Including features such as defrost, smart, clean, bi-level cooking, melt/soften, and reheat by sensor you will find a setting for anything you need. There are no broil or oven features which could be a deal breaker and almost dropped it from our recommended choice but….
This won the day for LG LMHM2237ST. When installing you have the options to chose back, top, or front ventilation. The back and top ventilations are for exterior venting if you have the setup for it. If not no worries there is a charcoal filter that does a fantastic job when ventilating back into the kitchen. LG has created a quiet power technology that keeps the noise from the system relatively quiet, and you gives you four different setting for fan speed. The power behind the system is one of the strongest on our list at 400CFM and performed well in all of our tests.
All microwaves have internal blowers which recirculate around the venting system. On the other hand, microwaves designed for over the range installation have options for venting to the outside. While the microwave itself does not require external venting, a vent needs to be in place for transferring odors, moisture, and grease from conventional cooking from the range. The best over the range microwaves all have different ventilation options normally outside, below, and out with some models even having the option venting up. You need to know which way you want to the vent to be blowing. Then you will need to check the user manual and set up the vent system correct BEFORE INSTALLING! Nothing is worse that getting everything set up and installed correctly only to have to take it down and change the vents to blow the proper way.
For convenience and safety, an OTR microwave should not be installed too high, and guides specify that the bottom of the microwave should be no higher than 5inches from the floor.Secondary to this is the space between your stove top and the bottom of your microwave; guides specify a minimum of 1inches should be available, but many professional builders recommend 20 – 2inches of clearance from stove top to the bottom of the microwave. Distance from the stovetop area is important as the heat from your range could cause the lower portion of the microwave to become hot during cooking processes.
Don’t forget Power
Nothing is more frustrating than having a perfectly centered microwave after a mistake free installation only to forget power. Two things to remember; make sure you have a power source if not hire an electrician and make sure the power source is close enough to where the microwaves power cord can reach.
Measuring and mapping out the installing will save many headaches. There are a few measurements you will need to map out.
The space flanking the range should be at least 30 inches, if space is wider, determine how to fill these spaces. Some OTR ovens come with filler kits, or you may be able to buy kits that match your kitchen.
If you have a wall cabinet above your range, this may have to be cut down or replaced to allow your microwave to fit in at your required height. You will need the proper height from the ground, from the microwave, and also check the height of the actual microwave will fit in your designated space.
If you have a vented hood already, isolate the power and remove the hood, you can now determine if there is a suitable power supply for your microwave. If none are present, you will need the service of a qualified electrician.***It should be noted; some manufacturers give an optimal height for the exhaust fan, which should have the most effect on extraction. Remember microwave fans are not as strong as range hoods and getting optimal performance is key.
Most OTR microwaves contain installation instructions, and most come with a fastening template which will show the hole positions required in the wall and the shelf above. If your microwave comes with a built-in wall bracket, this would have to be removed from the unit and positioned on the wall to obtain the drilling positions. If the spacing between your cabinets is greater than 30-inches, you must determine the center point of where to position and fasten your brackets, and also check that the length of your power cable is sufficient to reach your power socket..
Hold the bracket or template against the wall in your chosen position, and mark the drill positions for the fastenings. Additionally, if you are fastening to a studded wall, try to find at least one solid stud on which to secure the bracket. If no studs are available, holes must be drilled to accommodate toggle bolts.Once you have drilled all the holes, fasten the bracket to the wall and use a level to make sure it is level.
After you fix your wall bracket, you should then lay out the template on the underside of the shelf or cabinet where the top of your microwave will fasten. Included in the template should be the position required for the opening that you will cut for the exhaust damper (for external exhaust) and the microwave power cable. You typically want this to lead to a socket located outside of the cabinet area. Following the manufacturer’s instructions, make the required cutouts and drill holes as specified. ***MAKE SURE BEFORE SETTING YOUR MICROWAVE- Your exhaust outlet, either through the roof, through the wall, or if you have recirculating venting, and you have oriented the blower to follow which option you have decided on.
Take the microwave and engage the bottom edge of the wall bracket, and slowly rotate the microwave in an upwards direction to bring the top of the casing in line with the fastening on the shelf above the unit.Thread the power cable through your precut hole ready for connection to your power outlet.
With the aid of a helper who can support your oven, carefully thread the bolts, provided with your kit through the shelf or cabinet and into the top of your microwave. Be sure to use all the fasteners provided and then check the microwave with a level and plumb once installed.
The ducting for air extraction can be fastened to the microwave’s blower/ damper and concealed inside the overhead cabinet. The ducting is typically in the form of a 3-1/inch x 10-inch rectangular to round fitting. ***Safety is always paramount. Always lift cautiously and maintain a safe power supply during the installation process.
For sheer simplicity, a microwave-only option will heat up, defrost, steam and reheat food. Use it for ready meals, soup or vegetables – the options are endlessly convenient.
Acting more as a mini oven, this option uses a microwave, grill, convection oven and often a steam function. This could offer a solution to smaller kitchens with not much space for appliances, or simply just to provide more convenience.
Microwave with grill
These models demonstrate all the features of a standard microwave oven, but with the added convenience of a grill. This is ideal for grilling fish and meat, or simply crisping and browning the outside of your food. Also a great 2-inoption for if you need to save on space.
Size and power
Capacities vary from about 17L to over 32L. If you’re after a family-size microwave consider at least a 27L size. This will have a larger turntable and more interior height so you can cook more than one dish – or fit the Sunday roast in.
Microwave power is measured in watts, and can range from 800W to 1100W. The higher the wattage, the quicker your food will cook.
Features to consider
Microwaves vary considerably in price, but this is not just dependent on their power or size. Consider what type of cooking you do, and how you store your food: if you use your freezer a lot, then a good defrosting feature may be important. Other features can include settings for jacket potatoes or pizza.
Consider buying microwave-safe trays, dishes or steamers – even an egg poacher – to give you more cooking versatility.
The microwave considers the actual weight of the food, and works out the time needed to cook the food safely.
Uses random pulses of microwave energy to reduce the usual defrosting time even more.
Hints and tips
Never use any metal containers or objects – even twist-ties, as they have metal in them. If in doubt, consult the manufacturer’s directions
Leave any covered food vented when cooking it, so the steam can escape
When cooking large amounts, stir the food halfway through the cooking time: this will help to reduce any possible ‘cold spots’
Leave the food to stand for minutes once it’s cooked, as the heat will continue to spread through the food
Be careful when taking food out: although the container may not be that hot, the food inside will be
Don’t press Start on your microwave when it’s empty, as the microwaves will bounce off the interior walls and could cause damage.
You can’t use microwave ovens for sterilising baby bottles or other food utensils.
Although microwaves are extremely safe-to-use appliances, consumers who have small children or elderly family members in their homes may be concerned about the safety level of the products they use in their homes every day. Microwaves for these types of consumers need to be set at a higher level of safety and durability. One important safety feature to look for in a good microwave oven is a safety lock feature to prevent burns when small children unintentionally open a microwave that contains heated food or beverages.
This model has GE’s intuitive, user-friendly controls, and its over-the-range installation saves precious countertop space.
New for this year, we’ve made an over-the-range (OTR) microwave pick, the GE JVM6175SKSS, for homeowners who are redoing their kitchen or want to spare the counter space. Its sensor-cook options, presets, specs, and interface are similar to those of our main pick. Like all OTR microwaves, it also features a vent fan underneath the cooking chamber, with the option to send the air to a duct or recirculate it through a filter, depending on your kitchen’s configuration. It’s a great value given that OTR microwaves are generally much pricier than countertops.
2. Panasonic Microwave NN-SN686S Countertop/Built-In with Inverter Technology, 1.cu. ft., Stainless latest 201Panasonic microwave technology has a Sleek design and excellent cooking power it isa great success it has a light that turns on when the door is open and stays on while the oven is on the turntable is 13.inches in diameter.
3. Panasonic Countertop Microwave Oven with Inverter Technology -NN-SN651BAZ Black 1.Cu. Ft sounds like any other microwave what is microwave inverter technology?
Remember when you cooked something in the microwave at 50% power? What you had was 100% power pulsing on and off 50% of the time. This resulted in boil-overs, holes in your butter, or melted ice cream, etc. Inverter technology allows you to set the oven at say 50% power and you get just that; 50% power for 100% of the cooking time. Popping corn on 100% power often burns the hulls.
Over the Range Microwave Features to Look For
Turntable Types: Turntables often see a lot of use in above range microwave models, so what do you like in a turntable? Do you prefer glass versions which are a bit easier to clean? Do you need turntables that are more than a foot in diameter? Do you want the option to turn the turntable off if necessary? Are you more interested in a toaster oven model for breakfest foods?
Clocks and Timers: Since this type of microwave tends to occupy a central space in the kitchen, clocks and timers with bright LED lights are surprisingly important. All our picks have large and visible LED options for setting both clocks and timers.
Lighting: Do you need over-the-range lighting options? Then make sure that your microwave is compatible with this wiring option first!
Shop all combination microwaves
A standard microwave which can also work like a convection oven but with quicker cooking times. It can heat, roast, brown and crisp food allowing you to use it the same way you would your standard oven. Yes, that does also mean you can cook a roast dinner in it (if you get a big enough size).
The power of a microwave is measured in watts. The more watts a microwave has, the faster it can cook.
GE JVM3160RFSS Over-the-Range Microwave Oven
This microwave comes with a capacity of 1.cubic feet. Among others, one thing that we love the most about this product is how it comes with 1,000 watts. This will not be short in terms of power. It will be incredible in terms of performance, especially because it distributes heat evenly.
Ease of use is also a plus for this model. While the controls do not have illumination, they are excellent because they are strategically-positioned. The functions are pretty-much straightforward. Nonetheless, you might need to exert a bit of an effort in its installation.
It is also good because of its innovative venting system. The latter is designed in a manner that it will eliminate smoke and steam in a short span of time.
When it comes to its functions, it can also deliver a high level of satisfaction. Aside from the automatic and timed defrost, there are also programmed buttons that will eliminate guesswork. Just choose the specific program that is desired and the unit will automatically calculate time and level of heat that is required for the task.
RCA 1.6-cubic Foot Over the Range Microwave
If you are looking for an over range microwave that can do a lot, this is one option that should be part of your list. Aside from being able to set the time manually, there are also preset functions, such as for baked potato, frozen vegetables, ground meat, and popcorn, among others.
With 1,000 watts of power, it is more than enough for most tasks. To add, there are also six different power levels. This means that you can choose the amount of heat that it will generate depending on what you will do.
If you would like to prioritize safety, this model comes with a child lock. With the latter, you can have peace of mind since it cannot be accidentally operated by children.
Lastly, it is also a good thing that it comes with a stainless steel body. The latter will be an excellent choice if you wish to achieve an industrial look for the kitchen. Such choice of material is also exceptional because of its durability.
Frigidaire FGMV175QB Over-the-Range Microwave Oven
With a capacity of 1.7cubic feet, this can prove to be an excellent choice if space is an important concern for you. The large interior means that you will be able to heat more at a given time. More than this, it can also deliver up to 1,000 watts of power.
