Intel Skull Canyon NUC

It’s pricey and you don’t even get the whole PC for your money, but what this NUC from Intel is, is a powerful desktop PC in a teeny tiny case. It comes as a barebones kit, meaning you need to supply the operating system, RAM and an m.SSD drive (or two) for storage, but it’s all simple to put together.

Inside is a Core i6770HQ, a powerful Skylake processor that also packs Intel’s Iris Pro 580 graphics, making it possible to even do some light gaming on the Skull Canyon. Throw in 7.digital audio and Thunderbolt connectivity and you’ve got a crazy powerful little box. It’s as close right now as you can get to the ultimate mini PC.

ASUS VivoMini

Another pricier option, but with this VivoMini from ASUS you get the whole package, unlike Intel’s Skull Canyon. And what a package it is packed inside a fairly small, stylish looking box, that can even indulge some casual gaming and 4K video output.

At its heart the VivoMini houses an Intel Core i6200U processor, 8GB of DDRRAM and a 1TB HDD. Not only that but you’ll get fast 802.11ac WiFi, USB 3.and dedicated GTX930M graphics from NVIDIA. Its party piece, though, is the dual-bay design which accommodates two SSDs or 2.5-inch HDDs, or a single 3.5-inch HDD for all the storage you need. And with a VESA compatible mounting solution, you can hide it out of plain sight as well.

How We Test

We put each mini PC we review through a series of tests to determine how it performs. Synthetic benchmarks Geekbench and 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited provide scores that represent overall system speed and graphics prowess, respectively.

Most importantly, we use each mini PC for several hours, trying out its unique features and any preloaded software. If a system is sold as bare-bones (i.e., lacking RAM, storage or OS), we install 8GB of memory, a compatible SSD and the latest shipping version of Windows (currently Windows 10).

Hubsan XH107D Mini Drone

The Husban XH107D Quadcopter offers a live video screen camera and many enticing features to make this a good example of a drone.

One of the most important features of the H107D model is the 0.MP camera that allows for video recordings up to 100 feet away, with a 640 x 480 video output. The drone is equipped with first-person view (FPV), which is an impressive feat considering its size. It uses a 5.GHz transmitter to show a real-time feed of the camera’s view, providing an immersive level of flying. Furthermore, a high powered charger and minutes of battery life means that you’ll never be back on the ground for long.

The quad is durable, being able to take the brunt of most impacts with little to no damage. Weighing in at less than 40 grams, it’s also highly manoeuvrable. A way flip allows it to go left, right, forward and backward, and the drone also has the latest axis flight-control system, with an adjustable gyro sensitivity meaning you have a stable, secure flight.

The H107D Quadcopter is an efficient machine that offers a good FPV flying experience, and is a definite must have for enthusiasts.

CX-10WD-TX Cheerson Edition Mini Drone

The CX-10WD-TX Cheerson Edition Remote Control Quadcopter is an excellent piece of technology that makes for easy take off and landing and offers a simple yet elegant design.

The drone comes equipped with a channel transmitter; this allows it to fly sideward to the left and right, as well as rotate to the left and right, in addition to the four basic options which are ascending, descending, forwards and backwards. It is considered an adaptable and flexible system with both the included transmitter and mobile devices being able to control the drone.

A 6-axis gyro system makes this quad easy to operate, and gives you a stable flying experience. For both visual effect and safety, the Quadcopter is equipped with multi-coloured LED lights, meaning that night time flying is both beautiful to look at, while allowing for tracking its location effectively without fear of losing it. As well as this, the model has a high-density air pressure sensor attached that enables it to precisely maintain height, and allows for a precise operating experience.

With only 30 minutes charging time required, and being less than five inches in length and height, this is a fantastic example of an efficient Quadcopter

Ctronics Quadcopter Drone With HD Camera

The F2C Aviax Quadcopter is a powerful and compact drone that delivers high end performance and a wide range of excellent features.

The Quadcopter features a 6-axis gyro system for a stable, secure flight complimented by tight controls that are intuitive and responsive. The 4GB memory card means that you can use the 2.0M camera to begin photographing your flights immediately. With an impressive flying time of – minutes, you’ll never be grounded for long.

Weighing about an ounce, and being small and dynamic, the drone offers amazing aerial capability, with stunts and tricks being easy to implement and impressive to watch, there’s something for everyone to master.

The fact that the Quadcopter is controlled via a controller as opposed to an app is a good feature, as it allows for more precise controls and a more responsive system. The quad is durable and sturdy, being able to take multiple hits with little damage, proving it to be a well made and high quality product.

With all these positive selling points, and the ability this drone has to compete with larger models, it’s clear that this is a high quality Quadcopter that’s sure to be great for everybody

The FQ10A drone takes its position ahead of other competitors because of its higher resolution camera and other impressive features.

First of all, there is a WIFI enabled 2MP FPV camera that is mounted on the aircraft, to transmit the live video to the user in 720p, which gives the Quadcopter an overall shaper image resolution, as well as improved picture and video quality. Furthermore, the design features a 6-axis gyro system, which allows for improved flight capability and a balanced and secure flight.

The Quadcopter also has 2.4GHz anti fall interference technology, which enables several quadcopters to fly close together without interfering with each other. The 6-Axis gyroscope was adopted for strong stability, allowing for superior control with stronger wind resistance and ease of access. The drone has minutes of battery life available and takes just over an hour to fully recharge meaning you’re never stuck on the ground for very long. Also, the quad features “Altitude Hold Mode”, which allows the Quadcopter to maintain a constant altitude while giving you full control over yaw, pitch and roll as normal.

ELFIE Pocket Selfie Drone

The JJRC H3ELFIE Pocket Selfie Drone is a good example of high quality and portable technology, designed to be taken anywhere.

The quadcopter is equipped with a Wi-Fi enabled First-Person View Camera (FPV), which is mounted to the device allowing for live video to be transmitted to the user. Furthermore, the advanced barometer installed in the drone allows for more stable heights and maintaining altitude, meaning you can control the pitch, roll and yaw as normal. And, as an additional feature, the quad has a special “headless mode”, where the device can be flown without knowing the direction.

Another bonus is the easy way in which the drone can be activated, operating under a “one key” concept. Pressing one key will make the quad take off or land, allowing for easy flight and landing to ensure a smooth experience. The quadcopter has a 0.MP camera for photos and videos, and a 6-axis gyro system for improved performance. Charging is a simple thing to do with the USB cable included, allowing the drone to be charged via computer.

All these assets and the overall quality of the Quadcopter mean that this is an excellent example of modern drone technology.

HMini RC Quadcopter

The HMini RC Quadcopter is a stylistic and functional mini drone that offers many desirable features.

The 6-axle gyro system allows for a stable, secure flight with tight, responsive controls. There is an impressive LED system which makes for peace of mind during nighttime flying, as the quad is easily tracked and recovered if lost. The model is lightweight and durable, being able to whether most impacts with little critical damage, and has air time of minutes on average.

It works on a “one key” basis, which allows for the drone to automatically return to the user if needed with the press of a single button, and is capable of tricks and stunts, including a full 360 degree loop in the air. The Quadcopter includes a speed ratio to limit the speed, being able to toggle up to 40% of the maximum velocity for beginners and 100% for those who’ve mastered the control system. A more advanced control system allows for a sensitive and responsive system that doesn’t lose capability with distance, which is good for long range flights.

Overall, this drone is a good, reliable device, and is perfect for beginner pilots, but still appeals to all.

SKEYE Nano Drone With Camera

The SKEYE Nano Drone is a compact and high performing device, with some great features to entice a buyer.

A 6-axis gyroscope allows for a higher degree of control than a 4-axis gyro system, and responsive and intuitive controls provide a stable flight that gives you full command at all times. The drone comes ready to use, straight out of the box, and boasts a 300,000 pixel camera with an included micro SD card, so you can start taking photographs immediately, with the photos accessible seconds after the quad lands. The device also features video capability.

Built in sensors mean that the drone recognises when it’s airborne, so it will come to life if you toss it into the air from your hand, ready to be manoeuvred. The Quadcopter is compact, measuring x cm, but that size hides a precise and efficient quad that can compete with larger models with ease. The drone is adaptable, being able to be flown both indoors and outdoors, so the weather is not an issue.

With all these features available, it’s clear to see that this is a compact yet high level drone, suitable for use by a wide audience.

Hubsan XH107L Mini Quadcopter

The Hubsan H170L RTF Quadcopter is a great example of modern micro drone capabilities, with a lot of useful features that make this worth purchasing.

Boasting the latest 6-axis flight control system with adjustable gyro sensitivity, allows the quad to manoeuvre with ease. The tight, responsive control system means you can pilot the drone with an eventual practised skill and mastery. A way flip of left, right, forward and backward means that you get a stable and versatile flying experience every time. The smaller size of the model allows for setting down in places where larger models might not, as well as being able to negotiate places bigger drones would struggle with, allowing for an increase in areas you can explore. The drone works extremely well both indoors and outdoors, and also has minutes of flight time, so you can do plenty of flying before that half hour recharge period.

The drone is designed to be durable, and size isn’t an indication of strength in this case, as the quad will survive most impacts. This is a prime example of good, high quality Quadcopter technology, and would make a perfect gift for someone or as a personal purchase.

Makibes Micro Drone

A fantastic little mini drone that travels to distances of up to 80 metres from the remote control, although like any flying device it wise not to stretch it to its limits and 50 metres would leave the pilot with a safer flight. The Makibes drone comes equippes with a 2.p mega pixel camera, has a battery life of up to minutes and can fly in windy conditions as well as the best micro drones available. It is recommended to use a high class SD card for recording purposes to ensure all footage is recorded correctly.

Who should get this

Mini fridges are great companions for small apartments, dorm rooms, hangouts, and offices. They’re ideal for storing drinks, snacks, daily lunches, and leftovers, and the larger ones can also store perishable items for a few days at a time.

However, mini fridges fall short of full-size, all-purpose refrigerators in several key ways. Most minis have no crisper drawer, so produce will lose its fresh taste and texture after a few days. Freezer burn is common, too, and the freezer compartments don’t reach anywhere near the 0 degree Fahrenheit threshold for safe, long-term meat storage.

Pull Quote

All mini fridges work fine. They’re all built around similar parts, just in different capacities with different shelves.

People need to fit mini fridges in all kinds of spaces, so we broke the category down into two divisions based on size: cube mini fridges and tall mini fridges.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Most of the Midea WHS-65L’s flaws can be chalked up to problems with mini fridges in general. Finding the right temperature setting can be tricky since the temperature dial has no markings. Freezer burn is inevitable if you leave anything in there for more than a few days. And the cooling system seems cheaply built.

Freezer temperatures in all mini fridges tend to fluctuate a lot. That’s probably because it’s fundamentally inefficient to have an unsealed freezer shelf inside a compartment that’s mostly just a fridge. In our tests, we recorded pretty wide temperature fluctuations in the WHS-65L’s freezer, which jumped from 1to 2degrees Fahrenheit, and to 20 degrees at a lower setting. Those shifts in temperature are substantial enough to cause slight freezer burn within a few days, affecting the taste and texture of food. And because the freezer never came close to reaching the 0-degree threshold for safe, long-term meat storage in our tests, you’ll have to find a better place to keep your venison steaks for the winter.

The Pros of Owning a MINI

I’ll start with the positives as to why you should own a MINI brand vehicle:

Fun to drive. The main reason I wanted a MINI was because they looked so fun to drive. Once I got behind the wheel, I knew it was a good choice. They can quickly go fast, make turns without a problem, and can practically park anywhere. A don’t really care to drive, but when I do, I want it to be in a fun car. Of all of the vehicles I have owned, the MINI has been the most fun.

Customization. When I was first shopping around for a MINI, I went to their website to play with the various options I could have on the car. One thing about a MINI is that you can customize it almost anyway you want. Not only does the MINI stand out among other cars, you can make your own MINI stand out among other MINIs.

Affordable. If you choose not to get any options, this can be a very affordable car to buy. Granted, having some of the neater options are nice, they are not required when purchasing a MINI.

Lessened frequency of maintenance. A MINI doesn’t need to get an oil change, regular maintenance, etc., done every few months like other cars. Instead, you can go two years before having the car checked out. With the standard three year warranty, you can take it to a MINI dealership to have it go through it’s first maintenance. Though, I choose to get my oil changed sooner somewhere else just so it would have clean oil.

Great gas mileage. Even though MINI cars use the premium gas, it does offer decent gas mileage. I only have to fill up my tank once a month, and that is driving to and from work, other places around town, etc. I can do about six to seven hours of solid freeway driving before needing a fill-up, as well.

High resale value. A MINI brand car has a pretty good resale value, assuming the car is in great shape and has no problems with it. If and when you decide to get rid of your MINI, you will earn more back than what you would with other vehicles. I tend to change cars every five years, and while I may not with the MINI, having a high trade in value is definitely a bonus.

The Cons of Owning a MINI

Unfortunately, there are cons to buying and owning a MINI as well, some of which I have experienced personally.

MINI knows you want one. When people shop around for a car, they can bounce from dealership to dealership without really expressing they want a particular type of car. Unfortunately, when shopping for a MINI, most dealers will know that you want one of those in particular. If you express you drove a long way, loved them for years, etc., then they can turn that against you.

Can be expensive. If you want to get multiple options, then the price of a MINI can skyrocket. With all of the options I wanted, the price of my vehicle jumped by over 30%! Granted, it was worth it, but it made it the most expensive car I have ever owned. So be prepared to spend a lot of money if you want various options to make your car unique.

Dealerships aren’t everywhere. In my case, the closest dealership is about an hour and a half away, and is a pain to drive to. I am lucky that I have one that close. Other people may have to travel hours to get to a MINI dealership. If you do buy a MINI, then ensure you learn about your warranty. The flatbed service they offer to pickup your MINI is only for a limited area, and even getting a rental while your car is being repaired can be limited in how far you can drive it.

Maintenance can be expensive. Once your car is out of warranty, all repairs will need to be covered by you. There are extended warranty options, but those are expensive as well. Despite MINI brand cars becoming more common, the repairs can be very expensive. So if you purchase one, be prepared for that if your car starts to have issues.

It’s a small car. I went from a sports car to a MINI, which to me was a big jump in size, but a lot of people complain that there is very little storage space. It’s not meant to be a family car, it’s meant to be a fun car that can barely fit four people. I can hold a lot in my car, it just requires a bit of effort. But, the more expensive models have more space.

Uses the most expensive fuel. Despite the decent fuel economy, the MINI does require premium fuel. You can use the cheaper types of gas, but it won’t be great for your MINI, and will require more fill-ups, so it’s strongly discouraged that you do that.

Non-MINI dealerships won’t do a good job servicing your vehicle. I took my car in to a local repair shop to deal with a couple small issues, as well as an oil change. They couldn’t fix the issues I had with my car, and missed a very critical issue that my dealership found months later. So don’t rely on a non-MINI dealership/repair shop to take good car of your vehicle.

While the mesh design speaks for itself, the top, bottom, and side panels on the Core Vbox design are interchangeable. They make it easy for you to use the space while still allowing you to have enough airflow.

The Core Vfits a graphics card up to a maximum of 285mm. This might be something you need to check in to if you want to install a top-of-the line card. However, with so many “mini” versions available and small profile cards getting a boost in performance, this shouldn’t be much of a problem for most of you. For those wanting to purchase a non-stock CPU cooler, this case can fit a cooler up to 140mm in height.

Cooling Features

While the case is designed for decent airflow, it also includes a 120mm rear turbo fan. Optionallym you can install an additional x 120mm fans. For those looking to use liquid cooling, a radiator up to 240mm long will fit in the front and top.

Cooler Master N200

So, this is the type of case you could use to build an enthusiast PC or just a simple budget HTPC.

For Design, it has a sleek looking black finish along with a mesh front panel for increased airflow.

Speaking of airflow, the N200 comes with 120mm fans pre-installed. It’s nice that these come with the case; however, I found them to be a bit loud. So, a quiet aftermarket fan might be necessary for some situations.

Plastic feet are located on the bottom to prevent it from slipping. A dust filter is included in the front. Cable management is right on par with the N200’s price and you’ll want to use some ties to make the most of it. The power supply is mounted on bottom and there’s room enough for a standard ATX PSU.

The Side panels are easy-to-remove and this, along with the N200 design, make it very simple to build in.

PSU and Fit

Max PSU depth for this case is listed at 160mm; however, it’s a pretty tight fit. You’ll want to go with something modular for sure and, if possible, 140mm.

As shown by Anandtech, the BitFenix also has another plus in that it relatively quiet when compared to other cases in its category.

Fit and Design

The case is somewhat taller than some of the other cases we featured in this post at 12in (305mm) high; however, smaller in its dimensions overall with a width of 6.6in or 169mm. It includes 120mm fans.

The case itself is well built with stainless steel and a window that allows you to see the hardware inside. Despite its smaller form factor this case allows a double slot GPU up to inches or 267mm in length.

While it doesn’t allow for the longer cases that many of the other cases do it still works out for *most enthusiast cards including some GTX 770s and R270X. A standard optical drive won’t work with this case; however, a slim fit one will. *Check the manufacturer’s card dimensions before buying.

Beach Volley Ball

If you’ve ever longed to kick it on a beach, playing volleyball with a giant snail thing – you’re in luck, and also extremely niche in your tastes. Rack up 100 hits to get that precious prize. It sounds easy, but be warned: Beach Volley Ball is much more difficult than the Jump-Rope Challenge.

Cost-effective manual telescope for rooftop skywatching

City skies are full of light, and urban astronomers have two choices: Get a city-strong telescope to carry up to the roof, or get a highly portable scope and get out of town. Levenhuk’s Strike 90 Plus Refractor gives you both, plus a nice bag to carry it in on your adventures. Add a “sky-glow” filter to your eyepiece to give you a fighting chance of seeing more than just the moon when observing from cities.

Of course, the lower you go in price, the greater the limitations. Some of the 3D printers on this list won’t have a heated print bed, for example, and the build volume will be smaller. Plus, the print quality simply of most cheap 3D printers cannot compete with the more expensive machines out there.

But with some patience and tinkering, it’s possible to fabricate quality objects with a cheap 3D printer costing less than half the price of a flagship smartphone. How cool is that?

How we tested

Our testing pool after a few rounds of security testing. Photo: Duncan Niederlitz

For the previous version of this guide, we researched the different rating systems from foundations such as ART and Sold Secure, and we spoke to professional bicycle thieves. Although we learned a lot from that experience, this time we needed to get our hands dirty and see what all these locks were really made of. There is only so much that one can glean from third-party experiences and ratings, and this notion was proven by the many discrepancies we saw this time around between the security of locks rated the same (from the same rating institutions) and our own testing results. In addition, we scoured the Web for every lock review we could, to determine what lock-defeating methods other testers had employed, what locks and lock types were commonly tested, and how they all fared. No single review had tested as many locks in as many ways as we hoped to do, so we knew it would be difficult to make any comparative judgments on the locks we had chosen unless we did all the tests on all the locks ourselves. So we did.

To best test all of our chosen locks, and to feel assured that we were thorough enough to recommend something that would possibly be the only thing standing between a thief and your favorite (or only) ride, we needed to understand the tools available to a bike thief, as well as the pros and cons of using them from the perspective of a criminal. From our experiences working in shops over the years, and interviewing thieves themselves, we created a list of the most common tools that bicycle thieves use to defeat bike locks. This list covered the tools that thieves could effectively use against the assortment of locks we had chosen, and it became the checklist that our group of locks would need to go through in testing.

The tools

Lock picks: These are the smallest, quietest, and most portable tools to carry, but they’re also the ones requiring the most skill to use. Different locks require assorted tools and pose varying degrees of difficulty to pick; however, once a thief has the tools and the proficiency to quickly open a particular lock, it merely becomes a matter of walking the streets and looking through racks of bikes for a target lock they recognize as being easy to open.

Cable cutters: Thieves carry out a large number of bike thefts (possibly most of them) using a simple pair of diagonal wire cutters. These tools are easy to carry in a pocket, quiet, and simple to shoplift if not owned already. Unfortunately, the only reason simple diagonal cutters are so effective is because people continue to lock their bicycles using only a braided steel cable and a padlock, or a basic cable lock, even though such devices provide only the lowest level of security and should be used only as accessory locks in most situations. A good set of bypass cutters can cut these locks in a single pass, and a tiny set of diagonal cutters can do so with multiple snips.

Hacksaw: A hacksaw can be quiet and can work through a nonhardened lock fairly quickly. Most chains from the hardware store, cheap U-locks, and cable locks can be defeated with a hacksaw. The main drawback for a thief is that a hacksaw can be slow on a thicker lock, may catch and bind while trying to cut through a cable, and takes some physical effort to use in general. It is a very cheap tool to come by, though, and an easy one to carry and conceal.

Bolt cutters: Because so many bicycle thefts go unreported, it is difficult to collect accurate data on exactly how many bicycle thefts are committed each year, and especially to know the ways in which all those thefts are carried out. From my experience working in shops over the years, though, I’ve heard hundreds of stories of stolen bikes and seen many cut locks, and most of them (not including snipped cable locks) have been cut with bolt cutters. Bolt cutters can be quite small, usually 1to 2inches long. They’re quick to cut through a lock, cheap, portable, and easy to conceal. They don’t work on every lock, but for the ones they do work on, it’s only a quick snip and a free bike. Once thieves know which locks they can cut with the cutters they are carrying, it is again just a matter of walking the streets looking for a target lock and bike.

Cordless drill: This is a rarer tool for bike thieves, as it works well on only a few types of locks, and most of those are also easier to defeat using other methods, but occasionally drills do see use (most often during an unsuccessful attempt to drill out a lock’s core). The locks that drills do work well on (such as folding locks) have become more popular, though, and the reduction in noise and size over an angle grinder makes a drill a tempting tool for a thief to employ as more folding locks become available.

Angle grinder: A thief with a battery-powered angle grinder will defeat any lock if given enough time. For the thief, the biggest con to the grinder is the noise and sparks it emits as it grinds through hardened steel. In the past, cordless tools didn’t have the power for such uses, but battery technology has advanced enough that they can perform just as well as their corded counterparts, and thus they have changed the landscape of bicycle security. It’s hard not to notice one of these tools, but a thief who can mask the noise and is brazen enough to use one will probably be successful in stealing the bike.
