The Insider Pick
If you love cappuccinos, you need a great milk frother. After much research and testing, we found that the Stainless Steel HIC Milk Frother is the best you can buy.
It’s never been easier to make a perfect cup of coffee at home, but you need the right equipment to do it. If you’re a big fan of cappuccinos and lattes with splendid milk foam, you’re going to want a great milk frother in your collection of coffee-making products.
We’ve researched dozens of milk frothers and tested a few of them ourselves to find the best milk frothers you can buy.
There are many different kinds of milk frothers: manual, stationary electric, and handheld electric ones.
We first tried the handheld electric ones, because they were relatively cheap. However, the handheld electric ones rarely delivered on their promise of making milk creamy and frothy. Many of them also involve batteries, which can be expensive and annoying to constantly replace. As such, we haven’t included any of those frothers in this guide.
There are plenty of stationary electric milk frothers that you plug into your wall that will also produce excellent foamy milk, and we’ve put the best ones in this guide. However, the best electric milk frothers are significantly more expensive than handheld electronic ones and manual ones.
Although the Stainless Steel HIC Milk Creamer Frother is our top pick, for various reasons laid out in the slides below, you should also consider the Bodum Latteo Milk Frother, the Breville Milk Cafe Milk Frother, the Nespresso Aeroccino Electric Milk Frother, and the Epica Automatic Electric Milk Frother.
They also come without the convenience of some of the other types of frother which allow you to turn them on, walk away and then return to find deliciously foamed and heated milk.
We recommend taking a look at the Magnifica coffee machine by De Longhi if you decide a steam wand is for you.
These frothers consist of a glass jug/jar on top of which you place bulky lid that contains the frother mechanism and batteries. The advantage these have over hand held frothers is that you can just leave them to work opposed to having to hold the frother in the milk.
These by far, in our opinion, are the best of the bunch. The convenience they offer is unparalleled and they are typically much cheaper than buying a coffee machine, allowing you to get the best of both worlds: great, authentic coffee but without the price tag.
VonShef Electric Milk Frother
The VonShef Electric Milk Frother is a key tool in making the perfect hot drink.
Getting your milk right is easy with this frother courtesy of two interchangeable whisk attachments. One attachment will create creamy foam and the other will simply heat the milk to an ideal temperature.
The design is pleasing on the eye, and the indicator light will let you know when your milk is ready – heated to perfection at around 6degrees Celsius.
It works quickly, with 11ml of milk taking 6seconds to froth and 240 ml will be heated in a mere 130 seconds.
With a stainless steel housing and a non-stick coating on the inside, the VonShef milk frother is durable and easy to clean.
Hostess Milk Frother
With three heat settings, two hot and one cold, the Hostess Milk Frother is perfect for cappuccinos, hot chocolates, and even heating your favourite soup.
The jug can hold 250mls of milk, which is smaller than other milk frothers, but ideal for individual use. Cleaning is simple, both the jug and the lid are dishwasher safe.
The jug sits neatly inside a base and can be placed inside in any direction, making it versatile for left and right-handed consumers.
If you want the best froth, then you need the best frother. Of course, it can be a daunting task to find the best from the market that is filled with all sorts of brands and different types of the same. However, with the sampled products such as the ones that you have on this guide, you can simply consider some of the few features that could make you enjoy your best froth. Such features include the temperature settings and you should always check for this feature before making your purchase.
When checking on the materials that make the design of this product, you need not forget to know what makes its exterior as well as the interior. Of course, with the same knowledge, you can then make the best choice that will not come to give you a headache when it comes to its application. The exterior should come from the materials that last, and the interior should be non-sticky.
The main benefit of getting a milk frother or steamer is for the milk foam.
You get foamed milk by heating the milk up and shaking it. This introduces air and texture into the mix.
In the picture above, the milk has a very thick texture and large air bubbles.
Foamed milk is ideal for drinks like cappuccinos. The foam will sit on top of the milk and coffee, it’ll create an interesting mouthfeel as you will be able to taste the separation.
Electric milk frothers/steamers are a convenient way to heat up milk without burning or scalding them; which makes them taste bad. Most products in the market are good at ensuring that the milk is just the perfect temperature, but I’ll help you find the best milk steamers and milk frothers here.
Save You Money
But wait, there’s more! Depending on what you’re brewing, with a dedicated milk frother, you might not need one of those expensive espresso machines for home. A stovetop espresso machine or an AeroPress would do; they don’t cost a lot!
The immersion milk frother is usually a vibrating whisk that you can use to whip and whirl the milk in a cup or stove top pot warming the milk. The immersion whisk is usually the cheapest option for home milk frothing.
A manual milk frother looks very similar to a classic French Press. They use a closed vessel with a whisk attached to the handle. By manually pushing up and down on the milk, you’ll add air and texture. Like the immersion whisk, a manual milk frother requires you to steam the milk on the stovetop or in the microwave before use.
The costliest of the 3, electric milk frothers are also the most convenient. Other than changing the texture like the other two types, an electric milk frother also heats your milk up to the perfect temperature; it won’t be burnt or scalded. An electric milk frother comes in different shapes and sizes, it can range from a single-serving up to 1servings.
When deciding which type of milk frother you would like to use, it is important to look at a few key factors to help with your decision.
If you want to make the same silky texture and sweet taste milk like those in a decent coffee shop, you’ll have to create milk foam. This is the process where you introduce air and heat to milk. Typically, you inject air bubbles to milk that breaks down the protein bonds, which releases the sugar naturally found in milk.
When people froth or steam the milk, if done correctly, it should create a smooth texture and sweet taste.
For the best milk-based drink experience, you should agitate and whisk the milk during the heating process. By moving the milk around while it heats up, you prevent the milk from scalding. It also helps break down the fat in the milk, which helps release the protein bonds and create the sugary taste (as mentioned earlier).
Single Serving & Multi-Serving
While immersion wands are pretty good for a single serving of milk, what happens when you’re brewing coffee for a group of people? You don’t want to waste too much time frothing milk for everyone, one at a time, right?
When you buy your milk frother, keep in mind how many you’ll be serving, and how often. If you’re going to serve a group every time you use it, you should get an electric one, which is typically designed for multiple servings.
When I’m buying my own coffee equipment, I’m a firm believer in ease-of-use, especially if it’s for home-use. Therefore, when I look for a milk steamer or milk frother, I try to find something that’s easy-to-use, easy-to-clean, and will work 99% of the time with little effort.
As such, I personally prefer an electric milk steamer because they do all the work for you with just a flip of a switch. Some higher-end electric frothers are also dishwasher safe and can be easily disassembled; washing it will be a piece of cake.
When you pick which one to go for, keep in mind how much time and money you want to invest in it. How much time will I save, how convenient is this product, are there better options elsewhere?
What is the Best Milk Frothers & Milk Steams In Town?
The VonShef Electric Milk Frother is designed with the user in mind. It’s constructed with double layer stainless steel, which helps keep the milk warm and airy. The interior is coated with non-stick material, making it easier for you to clean and maintain.
Handheld vs. Jug Frothers
Essentially, there are two different types of milk frothers. There are jug style frothers and handheld frothers. Jug style frothers, as the name would suggest, are jug shaped devices that combine both steps of milk frothing into one simple step. The jug style frother will both heat up and froth the milk at the same time, making the process simple and easy.
With a handheld frother, you will have to heat up the milk on its own, and then use the handheld device to froth the milk. If you’re looking for the easiest way to do it, a jug style is the way to go and that is what will be reviewed in this post.
While frothing is the main feature that each one of these products is going to do, it’s important to pay attention to some of the other features that you’re going to get when you buy a milk frother.
For example, you’ll find some frothers that include extra features you’ll find useful such as temperature control and minimum and maximum fill indicators. Lastly, you should try and pay close attention to the power supply required by the frother as that can seriously impact your decision.
Lastly, the price of the milk frother is probably going to play a large part in your decision regarding which one you’re going to buy. The products reviewed below have a wide range in price so it might be good for you to figure out what you’re looking to spend and then try and find a frother in that range.
Typically, handheld frothers are going to be the cheapest option of the two. Much like anything else, it’s important to note that just because something is the most expensive, doesn’t mean it’s going to be the best option. included milk frother
How to Choose a Milk Frother
If you are clueless on which one will make the best pick, below are some of the most important factors that you need to take into consideration:
Capacity: If you intend to make drinks for your own only, a small one will be enough. On the other hand, if it is for a large household or for a business, choose one that is larger as this will allow you to save a lot of time.
Ease of Use: Choose a user-friendly milk frother, which means that using it will require minimal effort on your end. There should be few buttons, which will be indicative of lack of complications. The manufacturer must also provide comprehensive instructions.
Ease of Cleaning: It is not enough that it is easy to use. It should be also easy to clean and maintain. As much as possible, pick one that is dishwasher-safe. It will also be good if there are removable parts so that you can easily clean them.
Aesthetics: Most of the milk frothers are made from shiny chrome metal. There are some made from clear plastic. See to it that it has an appealing design, making it a great addition in the kitchen. If it looks good, it will also be a decorative piece and you will not feel the need to hide it in the cabinet.
Material: This is important because it will have a direct impact on the function and performance of the milk frother. If it is made from stainless steel, make sure that it is thick enough and that there is sufficient insulation. If it is made from glass, on the other hand, it must be able to resist even extreme heat.
Handle: It is one part of the frother than you should not ignore. There should be a well-designed handle, which will allow you to easily pour milk in a cup. It should accommodate even large hand and should have a solid grip.
Speed: Undeniably, most of us do not have the luxury of time. By nature, we are all impatient. With this, I highly-recommend that you pick one that will create milk froth in an instant. Especially for the electric ones, it should have a quick heat up time.
Warranty: This is important as it can provide you with peace of mind. The warranty period refers to the duration by which the manufacturer can offer free repair and replacement of defective parts. However, make sure to abide with the terms and conditions specified by the manufacturer.
Secura Automatic Electric Milk Frother and Warmer
The first thing that you will notice about this milk frother is its attractive design. This is not one of those kitchen appliances that you will feel compelled to hide in the cabinet. It has an elegant and sleek design that is sure to captivate the attention of your guests.
This is also excellent if you are looking for a versatile addition in your roster of coffee-making tools. Whether you are making lattes or cappuccinos, you can expect it to deliver dependable performance. You can use it for both hot milk and milk froth.
It is also worth noting that it comes with stainless steel exterior. This is one of the reasons why it is hard to beat in terms of aesthetics. More than this, it also features vacuum insulation, which is the one that is responsible for maintaining the right temperature of milk.
Bodum Milk Frother, Latteo Milk Frother with Glass Handle
This should be on the top of your list if you are looking for a product that comes with an affordable price. More than just being budget-friendly, it is also reliable. The main reason why this is cheap is the fact that it is a manual milk frother. Nonetheless, even if it is operated manually, you can produce air foam in just about half a minute.
Unlike most of the options that are available, which are made from stainless steel, this one comes with a glass carafe and handle. It is quite fragile, which makes it important to handle it with care. Nonetheless, it is borosilicate glass, which allows it to resist heat.
Lastly, this is also an excellent choice if you are looking for an option that will be effortless to clean. The carafe and the plunger are both dishwasher-safe.
Chefs Star Premier Automatic Milk Frother, Heater, and Cappuccino Maker
Among others, the overall construction of this product is one thing that deserves to be given emphasis. It is made from thick stainless steel, unlike others that are thin. This also makes it excellent when it comes to insulation, allowing it to maintain the right temperature.
From using the unit to having it cleaned, there is no need to exert too much effort. This is one of the most user-friendly options that you can find in the market. It even comes with a detachable base, allowing you to easily lift the carafe when it is time to pour the milk.
With this product, you will be able to make 250 milliliters of hot milk or 12milliliters or milk froth.
Lastly, it is also a good thing that it is already inclusive of two whisks. Whether it is just for heating milk or for frothing, there is a whisk that will do the job perfectly.
Nespresso Aeroccino 3
The name of it sounds like it should be futuristic and amazing, and the machine doesn’t disappoint. Nespresso has been constructing quality milk steamers for years now, and if you see a product from them at a discounted price, we strongly recommend you pick it up.
The Aeroccino is the upgraded version of the Nespresso Plus (which is already an outstanding device) and has some subtle, but effective, changes made to it.
It comes in two different color options (red or black) and produces rich, creamy foamy layers of milk at temperatures that are even higher than what is recommended for the perfect cappuccino at 140 to 150 degrees Fahrenheit. Sound good to you? Find it here.
The most important element is look for in a milk steamer machine are the capabilities it can offer you. Many of the cheaper products only offer basic frothing capabilities while the more expensive options tend to offer a far greater selection of different features including hot and cold frothing and heating at a wide range of temperatures.
This also means that the best milk frothers have the flexibility to produce different types of drink options such as hot or cold cappuccinos, lattes and hot chocolate.
The design is very important in both appearance and practical use. You should first and foremost choose a frother which appeals to you visually and will fit nicely into your kitchen.
Most frothers have a low key, stylish look but some have more of a ‘wow’ factor than others.
You should also make sure to consider the practical implications of the design too.
The material the frother is made from is an important indication to its quality. Stainless steel is usually the way to go if you want a long lasting product.
Nespresso Milk Frother
The price of the Nespresso Aeroccino Plusis totally justified considering the trusted brand, support and overall quality of the product.
This milk frothing machine is going to be a perfect choice for most people. However, if you are someone who happens to be looking for a high-end or budget milk frother you should keep reading.
Breville Milk Frother
One of the first things that will jump out to you about the Breville BMF is how visually appealing it is. The stainless-steel exterior and removable milk container design can only be admired.
The main practical advantages that this frother has over the cheaper options include:
Using the Breville BMF600XL will be a huge step towards making that perfect cappuccino or latte you have been waiting for.
Brewberry Budget Milk Frother
If you have been searching for a cheaper milk frother that will still get the job done, then the Brewberry Premium Automatic Milk Frother might just be a dream come true.
While it may not be up to the standards of the more expensive options this product still delivers on quality. With two included whisks the Brewberry Premium is more than capable of both heating and frothing (hot and cold milk).
Just like its higher budget counterparts this milk frother is non-stick for easy cleaning and has a removable base for easy pouring. The 2-year warranty is also a wonderful bonus.
At a minimal price, the Brewberry is as low budget as we recommend you going to avoid ending up with disappointing product.
This milk steamer machine will be a fantastic addition to your kitchen. It’s a great choice for a budget buyer who may be planning to use the frother less frequently.
Epica Automatic Milk Frother
If none of the above appeal to you for whatever reason, then you may want to consider the Epica Automatic Electric Milk Frother.
This is a budget to mid-range milk steamer and frother. It has a fanatic reputation with customers online and offers some unique features.
One of the main advantages of the Epica is its vast range of drink making capabilities. It is extremely easy to use with three button settings choices, hot froth, cold froth and hot milk. This frother can be used to make delicious cappuccinos and lattes as well as hot chocolate in less than 90 seconds! Just like many of the other milk frothing machine the Epica is also compatible with a wide range of milk types for a greater variety of output.
The design of the Epica is also one of our favorites with a slim look and removable base. It’s also worthwhile noting that the Epica is one of the quietest milk steamers out there which is good news if you appreciate a peaceful kitchen.
The popular brand, ease of use and plentiful milk frothing/heating options are just some of the reasons why the Epica could be a good choice for you.
The electric Capresso earns top marks for easily frothing milk into rich, warm foam. Controls let you select between two different temperature settings, and a built-in heater warms the milk while whipping in air. When you’re done, the carafe can be removed from the base for easy pouring and simple cleanup.
If you’re making only the occasional latte, the Aerolatte is small and slim, making it easy to stash in a drawer when it’s not in use. You’ll need to heat milk manually in the microwave or on the stove, then submerge the frother while it whips in air. This model works best when only partially submerged, so to whip in maximum air you’ll need to use it near the top of the carafe, which can result in splatters if you’re not careful.
This simple, self-contained frother still requires you to heat milk manually, but the glass carafe keeps it contained as you plunge in air to whip up foam. It’s larger to store than stick models and lacks the automation of an electric, and you’ll need to remove the frothing screen before pouring. But its inexpensive price gets you a frother and carafe in a single unit, making it ideal for occasional use.
Although the temperature that the milk reaches is usually the same regardless of which product you choose, there can be variations depending on what the frother is designed to do.
The milk doesn’t reach boiling point so you have less of a problem with the milk burning to the container. You can also enjoy your drinks at the correct temperature for your coffee.
The way the products froth the milk is achieved by whisks rather than steam as you would find in a coffee shop. The end result is the same however and there are two whisks that come with most of the products.
There are many drinks that can be made using the combination of whisks.
The controls on milk frothers are usually basic and easy to use, some of the higher end machines may have additional features.
In many cases, the button is rubberised so that it is impervious to water and can be cleaned with a cloth.
The choice of milk frothers is quite vast and the specifications are often dependant on the make and quality of the item. There are a number of features that will be the same across the board, but it is worth considering all the factors before choosing. The biggest factor may be the capacity of the container, as this will affect the number of drinks you can make at one time.
Whichever milk frother you choose, you will be able recreate that coffee shop taste and texture in your home whenever you want. You can even impress your friends with coffee shop style drinks.
Ideal Temperature for Frothing
For frothing or foaming as it is often referred to, you never want to overheat it. The ideal temperature should never exceed 70 degrees Celsius. You want to have it somewhere between 65-70 degrees because at that temperature the milk retains its goodness and will not break down. Milk that has been prepared properly will always be foamed.
This simply means adding air (bubbles) into the milk and that helps sweeten the taste. As a general guideline for a latte the volume of milk should expand by approximately one-third due to foam. For a cappuccino it will have approximately doubled.
Below you will find a video that shows you how to avoid the most common mistakes when it comes to frothing milk.
Milk Frothing Jug Size
As you can imagine these frothing jugs come in different sizes. The most popular two choices are 330 ml and 660 ml. So clearly it will come down to how much milk you want to froth at any one time, as to which size you should buy.
It is easier I think to buy the bigger one as you can always use less milk, and they are not really that much more expensive.
Metal vs Stainless Steel Frothing Jugs
I mentioned earlier that these should be made from stainless steel rather than some of the other metals that are used. Stainless steel can resist heat better, do not flavour or taste the milk and are super easy to clean afterwards. Aside from that they look better and are suitable for most kitchens.

How an automatic milk frother works
An automatic frother also has the option to heat the milk for you. Not only does heating the milk help keep your beverage warmer longer, but it also helps form a thicker froth. hot/cold/warm ceramic coated aluminum, teflon
Also, most give you the option to have your milk either heated or cold, while others allow a more variable temperature option. The variable temperature Breville milk frother can take a bit longer than other frothers to heat up your milk, as it uses induction heating.
The way a handheld frother functions is by immersing the whisk into a carafe or cup, turning it on, and allowing the whisk to froth the milk. The batteries power the whisk while you hold it and keep it submerged until your froth is ready.
It whips up milk fairly nicely but you might have to spend extra time if you want a fuller froth. The amount of time will vary depending on the type of milk you use, and how thick you prefer your froth. It might seem counter-intuitive but milks with less fat create a stiffer froth.
One thing to keep in mind when deciding which is the best milk frother to suit your needs is that a handheld frother does not heat the milk. You would have to separately heat the milk first if you would like hot frothed milk. Or you can just whisk cold milk.
There are also manual whisks. This pogo style whisk requires you to repeatedly push down, as if it were a small pogo stick:
The whisk spins around as you rapidly spring the stick up and down. The pogo style whisk is often around the same price as a battery operated handheld frother. stainless steel
Bialetti Tuttocrema Manual Milk Frother
The Bialetti Tuttocrema can be used to froth milk and cream. It is equipped with dual screens which enables the Bialetti to produce thicker froth. The frother has nonstick Teflon finished surface for easy cleaning. The carafe on this model frother may also be placed on the stove to steam milk before frothing.
HIC Brand 14-ounce Stainless Steel Manual Milk Frother
The HIC 1ounce manual frother will create thick froth for your coffee in 30 to 60 seconds with very little effort. The frother produces excellent quality froth for your coffee and will also make whipped cream. The carafe, cover and pump are all made from high quality stainless steel.
Hand Wash Only
Although it’s the most expensive of these three milk frothers by far, the Breville Milk Café’s performance definitely justifies its price point. In addition to being much larger than its competitors, the Breville Milk Café also provides users with the ability to add ingredients directly to the frothing vessel, so you can make a rich and creamy hot chocolate or chai by adding syrups directly into the milk.
Pros of the Milk Cafe
Largest Capacity: For steaming a large volume of milk, the Breville doesn’t really have any competition. It can hold a maximum of 1ounces of cold milk for frothing lattes or cappuccinos, and can hold even more if you’re only looking to heat milk for hot chocolate or lattes.
Easy Clean-Up: Because it heats through induction, the Breville Milk Café is dishwasher safe, which is another advantage over its competitors. Many other milk steamers require complete disassembly and hand-washing, so the ability to toss the steamer into the dishwasher is a big time-saver.
High Heat Settings: The Milk Café also gets a lot hotter than many other home steamers: it can heat milk up to 170° F, which is perfect for extra-hot drinks and making cappuccinos and lattes.
Cons of the Milk Cafe
Size: Because the Milk Café has such a large capacity for foamed milk, it also takes up a lot more space than many other milk steamers on the market. You’ll need a lot more storage space if you intend to stow it away between uses, or a significant amount of counter space if you want to leave it out.
Occasional Mechanical Issues: While the Breville Milk Café also has more advanced technologically than many of its competitors, some of that technology can occasionally malfunction. Some common issues are the milk foaming disc separating from its housing and a slight wobble between the top and bottom of the machine.
In my opinion, the benefits of the Milk Café far outweigh the negatives. If you’re not on a budget, spending the extra money for the Breville will definitely pay off, and you may find yourself spending less at your local coffee shop because you can achieve the same drinks at home.

For buyers looking for an affordable and dependable automatic milk steamer, the Epica is a really handy model, especially if you’re only looking to prepare one drink at a time. It’s compact, so storage is less of an issue, and it has several features that make it a great choice for home baristas.
Affordable: The Epica frother is about half the price of the Milk Café, and can sometimes be found for even less, and it’s very well constructed for its price point. If you’re not looking to break the bank, this is an affordable step up from a frothing wand.
Hot and Cold Milk Settings: The ability to froth hot or cold milk makes this a really versatile machine. Some users even like to put the milk through a cold frothing cycle before adding heat to provide their drinks with extra volume. Operation is also very easy, with single button control over every setting.
Vacuum Insulation: I love that the Epica is vacuum insulated to keep milk at a consistent temperature. You won’t lose heat after you froth your milk, which gives you extra time to pour and enjoy your drinks. Cold frothed milk will maintain its temperature, which is great for iced lattes at home.
Capacity: The Epica frother can hold up to 250ml for heating milk, and 125ml for frothing. This definitely makes it a single-serving home steamer, and you may find that you want some extra capacity for making multiple drinks.
Cleaning: Although stainless steel is relatively easy to clean and maintain, the Epica can’t be submerged in water and is prone to buildup of burnt milk at the bottom of its vessel. Washing after each drink will prevent this from happening, but you may really need to scrub the frother.
Low Temperature: Some users have reported issues with the Epica frother’s ability to heat milk to the right temperature for cappuccinos and lattes. It will heat milk to the bottom of the temperature range for hot drinks, but don’t expect to make an extra-hot latte with this steamer.
The Epica milk frother is a great model if you’re just starting out with home steaming, but it does have some drawbacks. Still, it is easy to operate and doesn’t take a lot of space, so if you’re only making one drink at a time it’s a great home milk steamer. If you are interested in buying, check this listing
For a balance between price and capacity, a Secura is probably your best bet. While none of the available models steam as much milk as Breville’s Milk Café, the largest Secura definitely comes close to rivaling the pricier model’s capacity.
Wide Range of Options: Secura makes frothers in several sizes, making it easy to find a model that suits your everyday home steaming needs. Steaming a single drink at a time? The 250ml model is your best bet. 300ml and 500ml models provide extra flexibility.
Capacity: The largest Secura holds 500ml, which is enough milk to make several drinks at once. If you’re looking for a large capacity but a smaller home steamer, this is an excellent option that balances price and capacity.
Temperature: One of the biggest strikes against the Secura frother is the same as with the Epica: milk just doesn’t get hot enough. The frother will heat milk to the low level of the acceptable temperature range, but you definitely won’t get very hot drinks.
Leaking: The Secura milk frother is particularly prone to leaks, which can leave your countertop covered in steamed milk. The seal between the rotary staff and the vessel seems to be the main cause of this problem.
No Customer Support: Many users have reported issues with customer support from Secura. Hopefully this will never be an issue, but if your frother experiences mechanical issues, you may be out of luck when it comes to finding support or service.
I like the Secura as an affordable but versatile home milk steamer, but I would want something a little more dependable for everyday use. Daily wear on the components can definitely exacerbate the leaking issues. You can check this listing for the latest pricing
I like all of these steamers, and any one of them would make a great addition to a home barista’s kitchen. Ultimately, the decision comes down to questions of price and capacity: if you’re only steaming a drink at a time, there’s not much of a need to go all out and buy a 3-cup steamer, but if you’ve got a whole family of latte drinkers, you’re going to want the extra capacity of the Breville or larger Secura.
Sad, but budget has to come first. With an idea of what you’d like to spend, you then can enter the market at a realistic level. If you want to spend under £100, your choice is limited, but it is still possible. Spending over £500, and you can look at durable, long term bean to cup machines or even semi commercial machines.
Here is a rough guide of the best within each price range:
What do you want from your espresso machine? Do you mainly drink lattes, espresso or Americano? If you mainly drink coffee with steamed milk, when looking at models make sure the steam wand is as good as it can be for your budget. Take a milk jug with you and make sure you can easily access the wand – for example, some wands on small machines are low to the tabletop and will require a very small jug to be used.
If you mainly drink espresso, consider other types of espresso maker – for example the Presso (RRP £79.99) or the Handpresso (RRP £89.99), both of which create fantastic espresso and are non electric (so they are quicker to use than a machine and also cheaper to run).
Presso Espresso Maker RRP £89.99
This is a fully aluminium coffee maker which creates espresso using just hot water from the kettle and a corkscrew-type effect to create pressure. A nice precursor to the La Pavoni, a lever machine for beginners. Making a good shot is very straightforward, providing your coffee is freshly roasted and freshly ground. Stale coffee is no friend to this!
Aeropress RRP £30.00
A toughened Perspex tube which has suspicious looking intentions, this coffee maker is the latest coffee geek gadget! It works on the filter system, and is capable of producing “espresso” style shots and filter style coffee. I personally prefer this for filter coffees with lots of flavour, like Ethiopians, as it is great at picking out subtle flavours.
Ozeri Deluxe Milk Frother & Whisk
This small and powerful device packs a punch. For starters, it creates the perfect foam in just seconds. It comes with a stand which makes it easy to store, two milk frothing whisks, one egg beater and one cocktail mixer along with two pre-installed AA batteries. The potent motor spins at an impressive 15,000 revolutions per minute. Besides making delicious bubbles and foam atop café lattes, milkshakes, cold coffees and matcha green tea, this frother can also whisk eggs, smoothen sauces and whip soups.
Battery powered vs. Power Plugs
Usually, with the exception of a few models such as the Bodum Latteo Milk Frother, most frothers are powered by either batteries or electric plugs. While the power plug operated ones warm the milk and make an excellent froth, the battery powered ones are portable. It really depends on whether you would like to use the frother solely at home or in the office and at home. Of course, if you wish to use it in your office and at home, it makes sense to opt for a battery powered one since it’s easy to carry and transport.
However, portable frothers need their batteries to be replaced frequently since the stored energy depletes quickly with repeated use.
Using the frother for all liquids vs. Just milk
Would you like to use your frother to just whisk milk for your coffee or would you also like it to beat eggs, smoothen sauces and give silky meringues? Some coffee lovers are content with using it just to foam milk but others may want to use it to beat their eggs for mouth-watering scrambled eggs to accompany their latte for breakfast.
Obviously, if you already have a whisk or beater at home, buying a multi-purpose frother might not be on your consideration list. Whatever you choose, ensure that you get ample value from your purchase.
Almost always, the battery-powered frothers don’t heat milk. Caffeine addicts might want the milk and froth to be heated at the same time. If you don’t want to preheat your milk and then froth it or don’t want the trouble of popping a cold froth in a microwave to warm it up, it would be advisable to go for an electrically powered milk frother. Usually, in baristas, the froth is made while heating the milk.
You might also want to look into the available storage space in your kitchen, the design of your ideal milk frother and whether you need one that can foam multiple cups of cappuccino. Undoubtedly, your budget plays an important role in your decision of selecting the milk frothing machine.
Also, look for a manufacturer’s warranty or a money-back guarantee. Various companies are generally willing to exchange frothers that are damaged or malfunctioned.
No matter what frother you decide to buy, make sure that it is exactly what you’re looking for. Every caffeine connoisseur has their own idea of a perfect cup of hot coffee. Buying a frother will enhance your mornings and give you Barista-like coffee whenever and wherever you’d like.
