Glass vs Plastic Jar Blender

Plastic pitchers are more popular with blender manufacturers nowadays because they are shatterproof and tested to withstand the high speeds of modern blenders. Therefore, blenders with glass pitchers will typically have less power.

Why Does Vitamix use Plastic Containers? stainless steel jar from Waring

They also do not contain BPA compound which is found in some plastic products. BPA is said to pose some health risks, although the FDA continues to say BPA is not hazardous.  Most blender companies including Vitamix, Blendtec, and Ninja use a BPA-free high-impact plastic called Eastman Tritan. For more on the BPA free debate you can read this article and this study. Since you are here, I assume you have already decided on buying a glass, BPA free blender.

The above reasons are driving some consumers to the glass pitcher varieties. While the choices are more limited, there are some excellent blenders with glass jars on the market. This article will help you choose the best model that combines functionality and meets all the requirements below.

Amount of Power

Many glass container blenders have lower power because of the concern that glass is not completely shatterproof. Therefore, there is a tendency by manufacturers to make glass container blenders with a low power rating to avoid potential cracking of the pitcher.

In this regard, many glass blenders are less than 500-700 Watts of power which can be under-powered for certain blending tasks such as making nut butter and  pureeing hard ingredients(raw vegetables, nuts, seeds).

Performance

Performance should be the first thing to look at when buying any product; not just a thermos food jar. In this case, performance should be a frontier for you when it comes to selecting the perfect food thermos. Look at the duration a thermos food jar takes to retain heat or cold. Although the duration varies, any food jars that is able to keep hot food hot or cold one cold for at least hours is worth buying.

Size

Are you buying a food jar for a family-sized meal or for single serving? If you are looking for a food jar for family-sized meals, you should only consider those with large capacities. But if you want to buy a food jar perhaps for carrying steamy food to the office, then it’s advisable that you settle on a compact size food storage container that is easy to transport. Food storage containers with compartments are arguably the best, as they give you a wide range of options, which helps you stay organized.

Material

Plastic materials are dangerous and can leach harmful chemicals into the jar’s content. Some metallic materials also have chemicals which are harmful to humans. For this reason, it’s recommended that you only choose a food jar made of food-grade materials. Aside from keeping you safe and healthy, most of these materials will not let the odor or taste of the previous content mix with the current content.

Until now.

Hey, proper storage is no laughing matter. I have had my fair share of spilled foods, leaky lids, microwave meltdowns, and other food-related tragedies that I’d now rather avoid, and you probably have too. You might be tempted to use any ol’ container—maybe even reuse an old cottage-cheese container—but a proper food-storage container helps reduce spoilage by keeping air out and preventing fridge smells from permeating your goods.

There are a few ways to test your lids

A winning lid and accompanying container should survive at least two of those tests without a problem. Even if you’re unlikely to bring liquid meals with you on the go, having a firm-fitting lid will save your bags from accidents.

It’s a cold world out there.

Freezing your food can ensure its longevity, but this also subjects it to the harshness of sub-zero temperatures, resulting in freezer burn—you know, those nasty white splotches on food that make it taste like something you’d find at a wax museum. Worse, improperly frozen foods can absorb other smells and flavors.

Here’s where freezer-friendly containers can protect the flavor, texture, and color of the food. They help reduce the food’s exposure to air, which is responsible for many of the unwanted side effects of freezing. Proper freezer-friendly containers should be sealable and rigid; some glass ones, like Mason jars, can work, but make sure to give your food some room to crystallize and expand. Plastic freezer Ziploc bags can be awesome alternatives as well.

Freezer-friendly containers won’t prevent freezer burn entirely, but they do go a long way in helping to preserve your food.

Reminder: The amount of time individual foods can be stored before their flavors and texture deteriorate can vary. Uncooked meat, for example, tends to store longer than cooked meat. Just make sure you label and rotate through your frozen foods in a timely manner.

Containers that don’t break the bank.

With most of us preparing meals 1-weeks in advance and sometimes eating 3-times a day, it takes a truckload of storage containers to accommodate all of that food. The cost can add up!

Buy one set to get started. Beware that some sets will advertise having a certain number of pieces, but often this number includes the lids, meaning you’re probably getting fewer actual containers. If you’re willing to splurge, glass sets are really worth the purchase.

It looks elegant.

In order to pick a good thing, need to pay attention to a lot of places, need to follow the three rules: first, moderate use of healthier; although canned food is delicious and healthy, but do not forget your diet balanced, do not give up some fresh fruit, If not so busy, must also often cook some meals with your family, warm your stomach and affection; second, do not blindly pursue large packaging, if you open a canned food without eating, we must put To the refrigerator, and it is best to eat as soon as possible; Third, the cooking time not too long, canned food is one of the benefits can provide some less common food, which is the food is cooking raw materials, canned food In the processing process is equal to cooked, so cooking time not too long.

Fill container.

This is where you have some creative license.  step four:

PLU (price look up) step five: check out and dig in!

Now, you’ll want to proudly head to the register with your filled jars and cloth bags. (I don’t weigh my cloth bags because they’re so light) The cashier will set your jar on the scale, subtract the tare weight and ask you what is inside. You’ll pull up the codes on your phone and she’ll charge you for exactly what you bought! Then go celebrate by eating all of your goodies. Why, yes, this is a picture of me sitting indian style and pigging out.

Rolls Up

Be sure to check with your daycare or preschool prior to purchasing your child’s nap mat. Requirements vary greatly by school. Some may require that the nap mat is able to roll up so that it can fit into a cubby, while other schools may require the nap mat to be at least 2″ thick. If your child’s school requires a vinyl nap mat we have suggestions about those below as well.

Here are our favorite nap mats in the following categories:

Thickness

It is interesting to note that the thickness of nap mats range from 1/3″ to 1/2″, the later providing superior comfort for your child. Hands down the Ozark Mountain Kids nap mat is the thickest at 1/2″,  made of a cotton/poly blend and also one of the largest in overall size.

Material

When considering materials we have found the nap mats composed of 100% cotton or a cotton/polyester blend provide the greatest warmth and comfort. Our favorite is the Wildkin Nap Mat which our daughter used for years. It is comfortable, durable and comes in a large variety of prints.

Some nap mats made of 100% polyester tend to be thin, not as warm and even a bit noisy when the child tosses or turns.  Also it seems that many nap mats that are 100% polyester are treated with flame retardant chemicals which can leach into your child’s skin.  Another newer option is a memory foam style mat.  Foams like vinyl are known to off-gas. If you are looking at a memory foam nap mat for your child we recommend My First Mattress which has been 3rd party tested by CertiPUR-US which tests products for off-gassing to make sure they fall into an acceptable range.

Another consideration is the overall size of the nap mat since your child may use the nap mat for several years, from daycare and preschool to stays at grandparents house and short overnight trips. Janiebee nap mats are the largest at 53″ long and 21″ wide, and they are 2″ thick.  I cannot say enough about Janiebee nap mats, they are crazy cute, personalizable, handmade in the USA, and Rene the owner of Janiebee is an absolute gem.

Machine Washable

Every all-in-one nap mat listed in the chart is machine washable. Keep in mind that if the pillow is not removable you may be looking at a longer dryer time than for the removable options. If you are using a vinyl nap mat they are designed to be wiped down after use.

Vinyl Nap Mats

In general we prefer the all-in-one nap mats below compared to the vinyl nap mats used by many facilities. Vinyl nap mats are known for off-gassing chemicals, which is not exactly something you want your child sleeping on.  If your school requires a vinyl nap mat we highly recommend Angeles Rest Germ Free 2″ nap mat, it is one of few nap mats with a Greengaurd certification.  From the Angeles Rest website:

Vinyl Nap Mat Cover Options

In addition to a vinyl nap mat like Angeles Rest, you can purchase a nap mat cover that can be slipped over the mat and provide additional comfort.  Also these types of covers stay in place as they are slipped onto the vinyl mat.

Brightness

The brightness of a stone is one of the most important factors in a stones beauty and value.

On the Australian opal fields you don’t hear the words” fire” used when miners talk about how bright a stone is. The term is however used a lot on the internet to describe a stone’s brightness, and to gauge opal brightness evenly over different stones.

Brightness Scale

Faint, Dull, Bright, Very Bright, Brilliant – Gem Quality

This is the brightness chart you will see on most internet auctions with being the brightest.

Currently the Opal association is working on a chart which will have seven levels of brightness with number ONE being the BRIGHTEST.

Check on listings to make sure what chart is being used.

Opal Sizes

Opal sizes are listed in millimetres (25.mm = inch) and weights are listed in carats – just like all other gemstones and the jewelry mountings for them A calibrated shape gemstone should fit most jewelry mountings designed for those dimensions.

An opal that is within 0.to mm of a calibrated size may acceptably fit into many calibrated mountings. Calibrated shape opals typically cost 15% to 50% more than a freeform shape opal due to the wastage of the opal when cut.

A freeform or larger size opal can be cut to a smaller size by an experienced cutter. Or you can have a custom jewelry mounting made for your unique opal, often for less expense than you might expect.

Thickness of the opal is a major factor in the carat weight of a precious opal gemstone – but an opal that is unusually thick will be considered less valuable as it may have to have excess weight removed to fit in a jewellery piece.

Play of Color

The very best precious opals have play-of-color across the entire gemstone when rotated. Most precious opals do not have play-of-color across 100% of the gem and are still stunning. Every natural precious opal gemstone is unique. Some precious opals have a flash, a Harlequin or other unusual pattern, rainbows, ribbons of color or many variations that are both beautiful and stunning while not covering 100% of the opal’s face.

If an opal doesn’t have Play-Of-Color, it isn’t precious opal.

Sometimes an area of the opal will have a Play-Of-Color flash from a particular viewing angle, while another area of the opal flashes best at a different viewing angle. You may have to rotate or pivot the Gem Stone and/or change positions between you, the opal and the viewing light to see Play-Of-Color from a particular area of many opal Gem Stones. These stone are directional and are usually best suited to a pendant.

The most expensive opals have at least some wonderful Play-of-Color from most viewing angles. Sometimes an opal is at its best if lighted from the side or from slightly ‘above’ which would make it an ideal opal to use for a pendant. Some opals are at their best and brightest ‘face up’ – when the viewer has the light source over her shoulder to view the opal face-on like a ring stone. Some of these patterns can EXPLODE and look stunning.

Visible Opal Flaws

Listed here are some of the natural imperfections that can reduce the value of your precious opal. If you can accept these natural imperfections, you may be able to purchase an opal you otherwise couldn’t afford. And, the ‘natural imperfections’ are proof that the opal is not man made!

A whitish to cream color area visible within your opal’s surface is often called ‘clay’ or ‘silk’ or ‘sand’, small bits of clay present when the opal was forming.

A ‘Matrix’ opal that has precious opal surrounded by visible rock or clay it formed within will be less valuable than a solid opal or most quality constructed doublets.

Potch lines across the colour face are acceptable provided they aren’t contrasting with the stones appearance. Most black gems have some potch in the face which doesn’t stand out but grey potch on a black stone would so it would decrease its value.

Sometimes a line inside the opal is just how the opal naturally formed and not a crack or flaw. Hold it close to a lamp shape to see it you can see a fractured reflection. If large areas of your opal have no precious Play-Of-Color (sometimes called ‘potch’), that will reduce the value of the opal.

If there are visible scratches on the surface of the opal, its value will increase after the opal has been professionally polished to remove them. Cracks that go through the thickness of the opal’s surface will reduce its value. To save a damaged valuable precious opal keepsake, cracks can sometimes be repaired and no longer be visible to the unaided eye.

Any seller of precious opals should always tell the customer if an opal has been repaired, stabilized or otherwise treated.

Opal Photography

It must be remembered that opal reflects light and digital cameras are not built to capture the amazing patterns and colour changes in opal.

A simple experiment is to place a stone on the floor by a doorway in natural sunlight, and move the stone back inside taking several photos along the way. You will most likely find that one photo looks amazing as if it has been enhanced.

Depending on the quality of photographic equipment and lighting sources, there will always be some variation between a digital photo and viewing a stone with a naked eye.

Sellers on are expected to produce consistent photos that are representative of the opal being sold. Viewing an item that has a video can be a good way to reveal the many different faces of a good quality opal, and see the movement of colour that is not necessarily visible from all angles.

The experienced buyer will know to take all information into account, including the N tone rating, brightness, shape, dimensions and of course price.

The most common complaint is for blue opals. Most cameras capture the mauve in the stone which the naked eye can’t see. So if you see a mauve stone remember it’s most likely a blue stone.

Pastel colours seem to come out true to form. With Ethiopian opal the red is easy to capture and it will not be as bright in the hand.

If a seller guarantees his stock there is no advantage in over enhancing the pictures as he would have to return too much stock.

Many sellers use a black background as the camera captures the opalat its best. Always ask for a photo taken in the hand.

You can see the two stones below look better in the hand shot which is more natural. The last picture has been enhanced so you notice how the hand looks red and less natural. If you see a hand looking red you know the picture has been enhanced.

Rock the Opal side-to-side and top-to-bottom – rotate it 90 degrees clockwise and repeat, – then again.

Change the angle between the light source, the opal and your eyes and repeat. Rock the opal side to side or top to bottom to change the viewing angle.

Harlequin Patterns

Harlequin opal is the most sought after pattern in opal due to its rarity and beauty.

On the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) website, it states: “Harlequin or mosaic – broad, angular, close-set patches of color”.

Originally rounded or floral shapes were not called harlequin but this is now common practice.

On some unscrupulous internet sites many stones are listed as harlequin as the seller believes this will increase its value. Many of these stones would not be called harlequin on the opal fields, however they can still be beautiful and valuable in their own right. It is always important to buy from an opal expert.

In my 20 years experience of selling thousands of stones, I have only had three opals which I consider to contain a true harlequin pattern.

Things to watch for

Synthetic opal are sometimes used in triplets which are much harder to spot. Generally they are very bright with a regular pattern that looks too constant to be natural. It is best to become familiar with a few man made opals (usually advertised as synthetic or man made) so it is easier to recognize them.

Andamooka Matrix

Andamooka Matrix is a natural white opal matrix found in Andamooka, South Australia. It has been treated to look like expensive black opal. The treatment is permanent but if you reshape or cut it you will have to re-treat it.

Some of this material is called concert which is more porous than the gem matrix. It is hard to get a good polish on it as it has pores. You can use a resin like liquid glass – or in Australia we use HXmade by Shell. This is an epoxy that soaks in to the stone and gives a good polish. The colours and fire are amazing.

Andamooka Matrix is even great just left in a glass jar as a dazzling specimen.

No Reserve Opal Online Auctions

No reserve opal online auctons are a great entry point for new opal buyers, as the buyer can determine the price at which the item sells. This is generally a good indicator of the value of the item.

For this reason sellers have been known to list a great variety of high quality items to ensure a good selling price, and build up their loyal repeat customer base.

Rough Opal

Buying rough opal is always a bit of a gamble as you can’t really see the quality of the precious opal within.

You can lessen the risk if you buy “rubs”. Opal rubs are pieces of rough that have been rubbed down to the colour bar so you can get some idea of the stone it will cut. There is still the risk of inclusions in the stone which may make it smaller than you expect.

Most sellers on the internet wet the rubs or rough before hand to show the colours you can expect when it is polished. Always check the thickness of rubs as if it is too thin it won’t be strong enough for a ring. Any stone around mm thick is too thin and may even need reinforcing in a pendant.

You shouldn’t expect to see a good stone in cheap rough as no seller would deliberately leave it there, however some beautiful stones have been found in rough that looked as if it contained nothing.

Black nobbys from Lightning Ridge are known for there surprises as even the most experienced dealers let some stones slip through in there rough grading process. Nobby rough untouched should always be viewed as a gamble.

With white opal rough it is a rule of thumb that what you paid per gram should cut that per carat as a finished stone.

Buying rough from photos is always difficult so you should check the sellers return policy. If they don’t offer one you should consider taking your business elsewhere. It is generally accepted that if you rub, snip or touch the rough it is considered sold.

Most internet sellers want your repeat business so even if you are not happy with what you have cut you can always ask for a bonus.

Trivia & Tips

The buyers on the internet have a big influence over the shape of the industry. If they return over enhanced stones back to sellers, they will be forcing sellers to more accurately classify their stock so all sellers are on an equal playing field, and it will be easier to compare stock between sellers.

The future is exciting for the opal industry. This beautiful stone is now available at competitive prices to buyers who would normally not have access to it.

The gemstone industry has many levels of dealers but the internet allows you to go direct to the source. New cameras will more accurately capture the true colours of opal and there will be evolving video technology that will allow you to see a stone as if it was in your hand.

Assess Your Needs

Narrowing down what you need can help ensure you get the right food storage containers for your kitchen. Below are some of the questions you may wish to consider:

What are you storing? Dry ingredients generally fare better in a round container, as there are no corners for the food to get stuck in. However, round containers take up more space than square and rectangular ones, due to their curved sides not allowing them to sit flush next to each other..

How much are you storing? Storage containers start at sizes as small as a few ounces for items like spices to larger containers that can hold more than 20 gallons.

Where will you store the containers? While large ingredient bins often have casters that raise the bottom of the bin several inches off the ground, most other food storage containers will need to be stored on shelves, as health regulations do not allow them to be stored on the floor. Whether they’ll be kept in cold or dry storage, the clearance available between shelves may dictate the upper end of sizes you will be able to consider. If your height clearance allows it, purchasing stackable containers can also help you maximize your space.

How can you implement FIFO procedures? Making sure your kitchen staff uses the oldest ingredients first reduces product loss and ensures food quality by reducing the likelihood of ingredients being used past their expiration dates. Some ingredient bins have FIFO barriers that allow you to add more product without mixing it with what’s already in it. Food storage labels can also help maintain the organization this system needs.

Can your food storage containers multitask? If you are storing food that will be used on a salad bar or buffet, you may wish to consider salad bar crocks. These have lids so they can be used for storage, but can also be set down into a food bar to display vegetables, salad dressing, or soup. Having the food stored and displayed in the same container can save space and labor.

Container Materials

The material a food container is made of will determine how you are able to use it and how durable it is. Plastic is the most common container material, but the type of plastic will determine its clarity, as well as whether it is microwavable.

Polycarbonate is a plastic prized for its clarity. While tinted polycarbonate containers are available, they’re more often perfectly clear to allow you to see what is inside them. Certain polycarbonate is microwave safe, but because it contains BPA, some experts recommend not using this type of plastic in the microwave. However, this is one of the most durable types of plastic and it’s nearly unbreakable.

Polyethylene is the most common plastic in the world. This plastic type is generally at least partially opaque, often to the point that it makes the contents of a polyethylene container impossible to see without removing the lid. Polyethylene is BPA-free, usually microwave safe, and more flexible than polycarbonate. Of the plastic types available, polyethylene is usually the most economical option.

Polypropylene cannot offer the clarity of polycarbonate, but it is more translucent than polyethylene. This plastic is BPA-free and suitable for use in freezers and microwaves.

Styrene acrylonitrile (SAN) is break-resistant and safe for use in microwaves. This plastic is usually clear with excellent clarity, often with a glass-like glossy finish.

Aluminum, as a metal, is not microwave safe. This material is often used for dough pans and salad bar crocks. While this metal is notorious for discoloring, it is also known for heating and cooling quickly. These should always be dried before being stored, as they are not as corrosion-resistant as stainless steel.

Square Containers

Square containers are ideal for conserving space, as they can sit directly next to each other with no empty space in between. Because dry ingredients can get stuck in the corners, these are more suitable for use for liquids such as soups or sauces.

Ingredient Bins

If you need to store dry ingredients in more bulk than is convenient in a round container, an ingredient bin may be what you need. Some have FIFO barriers, and some allow access to the contents even with additional bins stacked on top. The largest bins often come on casters to make transportation simple and to help comply with health codes. These are often used in bakeries and pizzerias to store flour, sugar, oats, and other bulk dry ingredients.

Salad Bar Crocks

Salad bar crocks are made to fit into a food bar, allowing you to offer customers salad dressings and toppings. These crocks pull double duty, as they also have lids, which are sometimes sold separately, that allow you to use them for storage..to 10.3qts.

Food Storage Accessories

Once you have found the right food storage containers, you can decide which accessories you need to help keep your kitchen organized. When it comes to keeping food organized and complying with HACCP data collection guidelines, food storage labels are indispensable. These allow you to label what each container holds, when it was placed there, when it should be used by, and any other relevant information. If you are storing dry ingredients, a scoop can help dispense the ingredients quickly and easily. These are available in stainless steel, aluminum, and polycarbonate.

To help your business comply with health codes, you may need wire or polymer shelving to store your food storage containers on. Most of these have adjustable shelves, allowing you to customize your setup to meet your local health regulations and allow enough room for your largest containers.

Cold water sterilising

This involves soaking everything in a special, non-toxic sterilising solution. You will need a large, deep container, so that bottles can be fully submerged. although the solution is harmless, it may have a strange taste or smell

This is a simple container that fits inside your microwave. Always check that the equipment is microwave-safe before sterilising with this method. relatively inexpensive and simple, as long as you have a microwave may not hold as many bottles as a conventional steam steriliser

NUK Microwave Steam Sterilizer

The NUK sterilizer offers you a swift and tender way to disinfect your baby bottles along with all its components, all without needing to use any harsh chemicals in the slightest. It uses the same method that is used by hospitals for steam sterilization. This makes it effective and speedy. It can decontaminate bottles plus components at the most at a time within minutes. It is applicable to almost every feeding gear available generally found in the market, and works well with most microwaves.

It will allow you to sterilize your baby’s feeding equipment with convenience if you happen to be traveling at the time. It can be used quite easily, just like any other best bottle sterilizer. A 1000 watt microwave can perform the job within minutes. An 800-950 watt microwave, on the other hand, can take up to minutes, and a 500-750 watt microwave will take about minutes to do the job.

The lid will secure the contents of the sterilizer. While using it, you need to remember that the container cannot be lifted through its lid. You must hold it from the base in order to avoid any accidental spillage. The package contains teat tongs, which assure a risk-free and sanitized extraction of your now sterilized baby bottle and its accessories. It has a proper slot to keep the bottles in their place. The base of its tray is in perfect sync with the plate of your microwave, so you won’t be annoyed by its moving about.

It is made from a plastic which is BPA free. Its cover securely seals the container, thus, preventing spillage. It can accommodate a maximum of bottles, plus small accessories like breast pumps and pacifiers. If you want to sterilize four bottles, they must be 5oz. in total. But if you have taller bottles, then of them can be positioned at an angle on their side. You can fit it into all typical microwaves. It is in compliance with the safety standards of the Child Product Safety Commission.

One limitation is that it can ideally hold only small sized bottles with accessories. When your baby’s appetite starts growing, you can decontaminate only a maximum of bottles at once. This is something that you should before buying it as its compactness can be easily seen. However, it is a good investment if you are on a budget and don’t plan to have any more babies in the future.

It has an integrated ventilation for steam so that your baby products can be sterilized efficiently within minutes. The locking mechanism of its lid keeps it safely in its place. There is a nipple tree on the drying tray which goes into the sterilizer. You can attach pacifiers, bottle collars as well as nipples on it. The sterilizer can be cleaned out in your dishwasher after usage.

Size Carries Weight Too

Think about how much you are going to be using the sterilizer. If you are breastfeeding your baby, for the most part, a sterilizer will hardly be put to use. And you might come to regret your expenses on a big sterilizer later, so look for a smaller size. You could also go for sterilized bottles that are designed specifically for sterilization in a microwave if you only want to sanitize one bottle all by itself.

On the other hand, if you plan to use bottles routinely, consider purchasing a larger sterilizer. Another thing to keep in mind is how much storage space you have in your home. Sterilizers take up a considerable amount of space. If you have enough space, you can think about an electric one. But if you need to be savvy about your storage, you might find microwave bags to be a better alternative.

BPA Free

BPA is an industrial chemical which is often used in the manufacturing of a variety of plastic products. It has been recently discovered, however, that BPA can result in a number of health risks, ranging from diabetes to cancer. This is why it is extremely significant that you get a sterilizer that is free of BPA. It is an added risk factor if consumed by babies, whose immunity is already low.

Our pick

Lifefactory 22-Ounce Glass Bottle with Classic Cap and Silicone Sleeve

We’ve chosen the 22-ounce Lifefactory Glass Bottle with Classic Cap and Silicone Sleeve as our glass pick for a third year because it offers a simple but elegant design, an easy-to-screw-off top, and (for a glass bottle) surprising resilience against casual abuse.

Bottles become a traveling billboard of values; for those without a car, it becomes a venue for bumper stickers—a new arena to express personal identity.

Dr. Martha Kaplan, Professor of Anthropology at Vassar College, writes in “Lonely Drinking Fountains and Comforting Coolers: Paradoxes of Water Value and Ironies of Water Use” that water bottles are a reflection of health and the self. By carrying around a water bottle instead of, say, a soda bottle, you’re signaling to others that you care about your body and are on-top-of-it enough to bring a reusable bottle with you and fill it up ahead of time unlike the less responsible folk who have to buy beverages along the way. Bottles become a traveling billboard of values; for those without a car, like city dwellers and college students, it becomes a venue for bumper stickers—a new arena to express personal identity. That is one reason why we review different kinds of bottles—to help find the one that best fits your needs, personality, and style for different circumstances.

The 27-ounce Klean Kanteen Classic is our favorite water bottle for most people. Why drink from stainless steel? Such bottles don’t suffer from the weight issues associated with glass bottles or insulated metal bottles. Many people find they look fancier than plastic bottles. They aren’t see-through, so you can carry beverages other than water without others knowing. Most metal bottles these days, including our pick, come with electropolished interiors to help keep the bottles from taking on the smells or tastes of the liquids you put in them (and vice versa).

The Klean Kanteen’s spot-on proportions are its best trait. The 2¾-inch-diameter base is wide enough to fit into a standard-size cup holder without wobbling. Similarly, its 1¾-inch mouth is just big enough to fit almost any ice cube you throw into it, but not so wide that you’ll spill water everywhere if you try to sip on the go. That was a major problem with both the 1-liter MSR Alpine, which we tested for the first version of this guide, and the ubiquitous Nalgene Wide-Mouth Tritan bottle it’s based on. Another upside to the size of the Klean Kanteen Classic’s opening is that it allows air to flow into the vessel while water flows out of it as you tip it back to drink. This design makes for a strong, steady stream of water with no annoying stops and starts to the flow.

You can accessorize the Klean Kanteen Classic with a number of optional lids to change its look or functionality. At the time of this writing, Klean Kanteen offered six caps on its website: an all-stainless-steel construction option, a non-leakproof silicone sports spout, bamboo highlights, a growler-style swing lock, and even a sippy-cup style for handing the bottle to kids (or for rehydrating while recovering from a particularly harsh hangover).

How much you enjoy the Klean Kanteen Classic depends on which cap you use. Several Wirecutter staffers reported that after a year of use, they found the standard Loop Cap to be difficult to open, especially when driving from one elevation to another. The slightly pricier Bamboo Cap was not only stylish but much easier to open. Testers who had arthritis also found it easier to open. The Bamboo Cap has a metal hook that was easier for our testers to grip and yank on when opening than the Sport Cap or standard lid.

The Klean Kanteen Classic is light, too, which is great since the additional weight of water in your bag is enough to haul around without your having to deal with the added heft of a bulky bottle. While empty, the 27-ounce Klean Kanteen Classic with Loop Cap weighs only 7.ounces, coming in second only to our pick for the best plastic bottle.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

We found that the surface of the bottle was a little slicker than we’d like it to be. If you’re wearing gloves or using the bottle on a particularly hot day when condensation coats its surface, you might find it hard to hold on to. But that’s a complaint you could make about virtually any stainless steel bottle. (A while back, one of our readers suggested that wrapping a few rubber bands around the bottle eliminates this issue; the trick works great.) And while its mouth is wide enough to comfortably drink from and drop ice cubes into, it’s too narrow for you to be able to wash the container without a bottle brush.

Additionally, it can be difficult to push down the spout on the Sport Cap enough so it doesn’t leak. If done properly, it can withstand 1hours on its side without a drop. But if not closed down properly (and, sometimes, it’s hard to tell if the spout is completely closed), it will most likely leak when not upright.

Easy to grip and open

The easiest-to-open bottle we’ve tested, it features a patented thread-free, watertight, airtight, leakproof lid. This elegant, dishwasher-safe bottle stacks in fridges and won’t roll away from you. It doesn’t hold as much water as other bottles, but that can be a plus for those who find the weight of traditional water bottles to be burdensome.

The Design for Living 16-Ounce Stackable Bottle is easier to open and to hold than any other bottle we’ve tested. The threadless lid works a bit like popping a cork. You only give it a quarter twist and it’s locked. There’s no pulling, yanking, or worrying that you aren’t on the right thread. Most importantly—there’s no leaking.

The bottle also comes with hand-sized grooves to help you grip better and prevent slippage. These grooves also improve your ability to open it and carry it around. It doesn’t come in a size larger than 1ounces, but two of our testers who have arthritis told us that anything bigger than 1ounces would be too heavy for them to lug.

The narrow mouth on the Design for Living is a pleasure to drink from, but it makes putting in ice cubes difficult. The bottle is fairly squat, making it easy to wash with a brush; it is also dishwasher-safe.

How we picked and tested

Just a few of the test subjects. Photo: Kyle Fitzgerald

No matter what materials a water bottle is made from, it should be durable, easy to open and use, a cinch to maintain, and leakproof, so that you feel safe tossing it into a bag with your iPad, phone, or other valuables.

Any bottle you buy should hold enough water that you’re not constantly looking to refill it. We decided that 2ounces to 2ounces was a comfortable range to shoot for; that’s enough liquid to keep your thirst quenched for hours, but not so much that the bottle becomes uncomfortably heavy to carry or too big to stick in a backpack. To maintain a healthy level of hydration that’s in line with what the Institute of Medicine recommends (although hydration basically boils down to having light enough pee), you’d need to refill a bottle of this size only four to five times in a day. Because of their material weight, glass bottles typically come in smaller sizes than those made out of steel or plastic. As such, with our glass choices we allowed for some leeway in size, with the cutoff being around 1ounces—the smallest amount we would want for a reusable water bottle. And because drinking warm water sucks, we also favored bottles with a mouth wide enough to accommodate ice cubes.

Choosing which bottles to test wasn’t easy, but our decision to look at more than 60 bottles when we put together the first version of this guide in 201definitely made the task less painful this time around. This year, we tested 1additional bottles against last year’s picks.
