Lemongrass

Citrus scents often inspire alertness and higher energy, but lemongrass, which has fresh citrus fragrance, eases anxiety and alleviates stress. Breathing in lemongrass also uplifts you and makes you feel revitalized, which together helps you feel good about yourself. A scent with many powers, lemongrass can also inspire you to meditate and encourages you to feel emotionally balanced.

Whether you burn incense during meditation, when winding down after a long day, or when awaking each morning, be sure to use the right scent for your mood. To inspire calm, relieve stress, and encourage feelings of well-being, burn these six scents.

For many, incense evokes college dorm rooms and hippie shops that smell more like car air freshener than exotic spices. But, lately, that stigma has started to lift, as fragrance artisans and boutique brands offer new variations that leave Nag Champa up in smoke.

Historically, incense was used to communicate with the spirit world. Whether burning a bundle of sage or lighting a stick of rare resins, one was sending offerings and prayers to the heavens in the form of smoke. This ritual remains a part of daily life in countries all across

Asia and the Middle East — a tradition that today’s Western incense makers take inspiration from, adding modern touches via packaging or unusual scent profiles.

For the L.A.-based artisanal perfumer Persephenie Lea, a

199trip to India — where incense is lit for any and every occasion — opened her senses to the aromatic world. She returned with sandalwood from Mysore and herbs from the Himalayas, but it wasn’t until last year that things came full circle with the launch of her own all-natural line of incense. She notes that while it once got a bad rap, along with cigarettes, customers have been responsive to the “clean burn” of her blends, and those of finer brands in general. “It seems like people are opening themselves up to the mystery of it,” she says.

Self-described “nature freak” Hall Newbegin, who began selling wildcrafted Juniper Ridge incense 1years ago in Berkeley, California, credits the new “maker” trend with his brand’s taking off. “The whole marketplace has changed,” he says. Now, incense is the “entry-level product” in his fragrance line sourced entirely from the wilderness.

Nicole Miller, who added incense to her popular Seattle lifestyle brand Blackbird three years ago, saw an opening with the explosion of the luxury-candle market. “It’s a really nice other way to do home fragrance,”

1Common Incenses *Is spirit associative, in the sense that it encompasses all of the four other elements.

Try an Oil Burner

To use it, just put a few drops of your favorite essential oil along with a few tablespoons of water into the resevoir, light your candle, and the heat from the tea light gently warms the oil, releasing its scent into the house.

Preheat your oven to 375F.

Bake for 30-4minutes, until the apples are soft, stirring a few times so that they cook evenly.

When the apples are done, your house will smell great! You can eat these on their own for a healthy treat or go decadent and spoon them over some ice cream.

Homemade Room Deodorizer

This DIY deodorizer is easy to make and it does double duty: the baking soda absorbs odors, and the essential oils help scent your room.

In a small bowl or a shallow teacup, combine 1/cup baking soda with 40 drops of your favorite essential oil. Give it a stir to combine, and place wherever you need a little aroma boost. It helps if you give the baking soda a stir once a day to release the smells from the essential oils. You can use this deodorizer for up to a month, adding a few drops of essential oil if the smell starts to fade.

YD News incense

While the concern for potential health dangers of burning incense remains, it is so widely and traditionally used in practice and ceremony we asked connoisseur, Kaivan Dave, founder of his own company myInsens, to weigh in on the smoky subject and give us some tips for the incense inclined and curious.

Get them here!

Makko is a prominent base ingredient for making incense.

Lemongrass is one of my favorite tea herbs, it has a lovely pleasant scent when burned. It is also used to keep away bugs.

Frankincense is a famous incense that comes from the resin of a boswellia tree.

Sandalwood is a heavenly scent. Be sure to source this from an ecologically sound source.

Benzoin gum is frequently used as a preservative in cosmetics and soaps. It has a mild, vanilla-like scent.

All of these powders can be combined in a small mixing bowl.

Next we’ll add small amounts of water to the mix until the powders can be formed into a malleable paste. I do this using a pipette dropper so that I can add water very slowly to avoid adding too much.

Add a little bit of water, stir, then add a little bit more until the mixture forms the consistency of play dough.

Once it is a paste, we can shape it into cones. To do this use your thumb as a base while you use your other hand to form the cone. Don’t make these too big or you’ll have difficulties getting them lit.

Place each of these cones on a piece of wax paper or other hard surface and let them dry for 2hours.

After 2hours, lay these cones on their side to allow air circulation to the bottom of the cone.

Once they are completely dried they can be stored in an air-tight container until ready to use.

To use these incense take one cone and place it on a fire-safe surface. Using a match or lighter, light the very tip of the cone, let it burn for a moment, and then blow it out.

The cone will continue to smolder, giving off a pleasant scent, until all the incense is burned. Remember to burn these in a well-ventilated area.

Commiphora myrrha

Myrrh is another valuable resin, which comes from a nearly leafless Middle Eastern shrub. Ancient Egyptians used it for healing and to embalm bodies. It is currently used for meditation, spirituality, happiness, transformation, strength, confidence and stability.

Pinching Mums: Tips For Pruning This Fall-Flowering Plant

Pinching mums is not a difficult task, but it is a necessary one. Grow sturdier, stockier and better flowering mums with the simple practice of pinching.

Although sweet Annie doesn’t produce large, striking blooms, the luscious fragrance of the foliage and flowers is something to crave.

Aargee Incense

British based company founded in197They don’t directly make incense, but import it, and have incense made for them under several brand names including Stamford, Imperial and Padmini. They use a range of incense companies, including Goloka, Tulasi, and Satya (Shrinivas Sugandhalaya). The quality is as variable as the intended markets, but includes some of the best incense made, and never sinks very low.

Mysore Sugandhi

The Mysore Sugandhi Dhoop Factory of Bangalore was formed in 1934, and claims to be the first exporter of incense from India – their name means the fragrant incense factory of Mysore, and their Chandon Dhoop was made under the patronage of the Maharaja of Mysore.

One Aromatics

One Aromatics is a brand of incense sold by One Village, a distributor of  fair trade goods made in poor or disadvantaged communities.  The company was founded in 197 Their range of incense is made by the Auroville community in India.

HEM Corporation

The HEM Corporation has incense factories in Bangalore, Mumbai and Bhiwandi; it was founded in 1975, and is one of the largest incense companies in the world, with over 100 different incense products which are exported to over 50 countries around the world. Most people will have heard of HEM and tried their sticks. For some people, HEM will be their main or only knowledge of incense. The incense is all chemical based – the sticks are hand made by rolling a charcoal paste onto sticks, which are then dipped into chemical perfumes.

Gopal Joie incense

Gopal, trading as Joie, make fairly standard cheap incense sticks and wet dhoops. The ingredients they use may all be natural, but the scents are artificial, created out of processing the natural ingredients. The scents are unimaginative – White Rose, Lily of the Valley, Orange, etc. The package decoration is uninspired and poor quality (a blurred image of a bunch of white roses for example). The scents are weak, and will often reveal more of the base burning material than the intended perfume.

The Gopal Group, which sells tobacco, chemicals, industrial perfume, etc,  was formed in 194They have incense factories in Delhi, Bangalore and Baddi.

Wild Berry

Wild Berry is an American incense which is starting to sell in the UK. The sticks are colourful, and have wacky modern names, like Pounding Surf and Baking Brownies. They have a pleasant aroma on the stick – quite sweet and like apple pie. When burned, they all smell the same – very synthetic.

Emporium UK

EmporiumUK.biz are a UK based importing business. They distribute incense, and also have their own brands which are made in India and Thailand. Among the brands they own are the nasty Divine Spirit and the cheap small Spiritual Sky. They have an incense factory in Calcutta.
