Highly popular, French-door models combine the drawer-style freezer of a bottom-freezer unit with the low-clearance doors of a side-by-side unit. This means that you’ll have a full-width, double-door fridge with plenty of storage space. With your refrigerator door effectively split into two, it also means that you won’t be letting quite as much cold air out when you’re opening just one door to grab the milk.
With the high demand for French-door refrigerators, you’re sure to find a huge variety of options, including models with top-of-the-line smart features you won’t find with other styles. You can also upgrade the look of your fridge to match your kitchen or even camouflage itself entirely among your cabinets, but be aware that you’ll likely be tacking a few thousand dollars onto the already steep price tag.
Take care of the foods you love
First, think about the things you like to cook and/or eat, then look for features that take really good care of those things. It’s a safe bet that those are the features you’ll enjoy using the most. Are you a devoted foodie who always wants a variety of fresh ingredients on hand? Many models offer sectional climate controls for the different compartments in your fridge or even dedicated, temperature-adjustable drawers. Do you live off of TV dinners and frozen leftovers? Look for advanced defrosting features designed to help eliminate freezer burn. Love a nice glass of pinot grigio? Look for a fridge with a built-in wine rack.
Consider the water dispenser
One trend that we’ve seen over the past few years: creativity from the water dispenser. GE is been leading the pack here, with French door models capable of dishing out the exact amount of water you want, and even ones capable of shutting off automatically once they detect that your glass, pitcher or pot is full. You’ll even find nifty features in GE’s less-expensive top-freezer models — most notably, ones that come with an “Autofill Pitcher” that’ll fill itself back up whenever you place it back in the fridge.
This GE fridge comes with a special pitcher that fills back up with water whenever you dock it into place.
Built-in refrigerators may be models that designers specifically made to fit perfectly flush with your kitchen cabinets and counters and may even sport matching panels. Otherwise, these fridges are the models that have the right dimensions to fit into your particular counter size.
Energy Rating and Efficiency
A refrigerator’s energy consumption is a significant factor that you should also consider. Typically, you’ll see those large yellow stickers that display an appliance’s energy guide. Refer to these guides carefully as they will give you an approximate value as to the energy consumed by the device. Take a look at this helpful video for reading and understanding energy guide labels:
A good sign when it comes to energy efficiency is the Energy Star Certification which the government regulates. A refrigerator will only obtain this qualification if it is “at least 15% percent more efficient than the required federal standard.”
Another factor you should never forget to consider is the fridge’s dimensions. Ensure that you accurately measure the fridge you’re planning to buy as well as the area in the kitchen where you will eventually put it. Measure also all the entrances that you’ll have to go through when you bring your new refrigerator home.

You need to allow for proper ventilation with at least 1” of space around the appliance. The unit may use more electricity, overheat, or in a worst case scenario, have components like the motor or compressor fail if there isn’t sufficient air flow.
Look at the space required to open the refrigerator door. To fully access and open drawers and bins, your door must be at least at a 90 degree angle. Does the door make contact with other appliances, kitchen cabinetry or an island when you open it? You should allow 2” of additional space for the side of the door hinge. If you have a single door, should it swing to the left or to the right? If you have multiple doors, such as French doors or side-by-side, is there enough clearance when all doors are open?
Most freestanding refrigerators have a deeper profile than the depth of a kitchen cabinet, and they tend to stick out. The counter-depth refrigerator was introduced to provide a sleeker design to blend in with cabinetry. This style comes in both side-by-side and French door designs, however keep in mind that because of the shallower depth, it will have less capacity than a freestanding unit. You may want to consider a wider model if your kitchen has the space available.
This design is probably the least common, but allows for the greatest storage of fresh food. Because there is no freezer unit at all, you want to ensure that you have other alternatives such as a full-size freezer or a second fridge if you require freezer capacity.
Refrigerators do not have finished sides like freestanding models and are designed to slide into spaces of your kitchen cabinetry. These units vary from 24″-60″ wide, can have a capacity of up to 40 cu.ft. and are available in many door configurations. The main attraction of a built-in is that you can order it with custom panels that blend into the décor of your kitchen.
ICE AND WATER DISPENSERS
Ice Dispensers –There are three different ways of automatically dispensing ice from your refrigerator depending on the model.
In-Freezer – From inside the freezer, you can easily access ice from your built-in ice maker. No fuss, no muss. Although it provides more ice capacity than the In-Door units, it also takes up valuable space in your freezer. This option is available on most refrigerators.
In-Door – This option is only available on Side-by-Side and French Door units. All you need to do is press a lever on the outside of the door to dispense your ice.
Dual Ice Maker – This is the best of both worlds where you have an In-Freezer and In-Door unit to give you extra ice making capacity, which is great for entertaining or events.
Just add water. How do you get water to your Ice/Water Dispenser capable fridge? If your current fridge does not have a water line connected to it, you will need a plumber to install a new water line to your fridge location. In addition, we highly recommend that you have proper water filtration built-in to ensure clean and safe water.
These refrigerators often look much the same as their standard or counter-depth siblings, only in a smaller package. Compact fridges are more common in areas where electricity is at a premium, and tend to be cheaper and less well-made than the larger and more expensive refrigerators. It can be very confusing to find refrigerators at the deliniation between compact and mini fridges due to overlapping dimensions and inconsistencies in labeling by manufacturers and retailers.
Mini fridges actually have the largest variation in style and size of any of the refrigerator size categories. These refrigerators include micro, USB fridges, portable coolers, counter-top fridges, and even decorative antiques. Due to space concerns, these refrigerators are best used in apartments and student housing, as well as cabins, hotel rooms, and RVs.
Different Needs for Different People
Depending on what your needs are, there are a variety of ways to go with a Freezerless Refrigerator. Some people just want the extra storage space that another refrigerator will offer. Others are looking for more of a design element that gives them a full width refrigerator along with a full width freezer. You might also be looking for a refrigerator without a freezer for some sort of commercial application. Whatever your particular needs are, there is a model that will work for you.
Here is a list of some of the best rated refrigerators without freezers. In no particular order:
The Automatic Door Closer keeps it cheap to run.
The Easy Care Stainless Steel Exterior and Frost Free feature makes maintenance a breeze with this unit.
There’s lots of storage from the Cantilever Glass Shelves and the lower Crisper to the Clear Adjustable Door Bins.
It’s Energy Star Certified and it does come with a Sabbath Mode (Star-K certified).
If you need an economical solution regarding a freezerless refrigerator, then this is one to definitely worth checking out. Just take a look at the MSRPs for both this refrigerator and the Gaggenau above — the one above is times more expensive. While the Gaggenau and Miele may last you a lifetime, who cares if you can buy more for the same price.
It is huge on the interior and unless you can keep it full all of time it will be difficult to keep from using a great deal of energy. (Though you can always fill the empty spots with gallons of bottled water to help keep the temperature constant.)
Things to Consider When Buying a Freezerless Refrigerator
We’ve managed to do a refrigerator review of dozens of refrigerators without freezers. We’ve found that no matter what functional needs you might have for your unit, there are certain traits and features you’ll want to look for when buying a stand alone refrigerator.
CAPACITY: The capacity of most stand alone refrigerators is much larger than your standard refrigerator freezer. Take into account the width and depth needs that you have specifically to help you make the right choice.
EFFICIENCY: A lot of the refrigerators without freezers models that we tested had efficiency problems. Much of it is due to the fact that you have a large refrigerator door that once open, lets out the majority of the cold air. Since this isn’t exactly something that can be helped, you want to consider purchasing a model that is Energy Star Certified and is well insulated so that it uses as little energy as possible.
STYLE: If you’re using the freezerless refrigerator for commercial purposes, you may not have much of care about the particular style of the unit. But, if you’re buying one for your home, consider what your likes and dislikes are. Many of these units are available in Stainless Steel or Titanium finishes which blend well into just about any existing kitchen decor.
