Cushion back

The conventional look of a British sofa is the cushion back. Two or three boxed-sided cushions of an equal size will be placed across the back of the piece. On a fabric sofa these can normally be turned and moved to even out wear and tear. On leather sofas, and occasionally fabric ones, the cushions will be one-sided and sometimes fixed in place with a zip to prevent slippage.

As with backs, seats can be fixed or cushioned; this affects the sit and your individual comfort.

Fixed seats

This is when the seat of the sofa itself is sprung and upholstered. Like a fixed back, this offers a very neat, tailored appearance which requires no maintenance. As there are no cushions to turn though, wear can be very focused on the specific points where people sit, so this type of sofa suits more robust fabrics with less stretch to match its more formal appearance. Fabrics with more stretch may “puddle” or ripple over time as the foam interiors settle.

Cushioned seats

These are more conventional and are normally reversible on fabric models. Cushions may be filled with foam, fibre, feather or a combination. Each offer a different quality sit and require different levels of maintenance – see the notes on back cushions above.

As a general rule, the softer the seat cushion, the more upkeep it will need to keep cushions in good order and looking neat and well dressed.

The design of the arm is often what defines a piece of upholstery and identifies it as classic or contemporary. Wider arms give a sofa presence and scale, but can take up a significant amount of overall length. For small rooms, consider a narrower arm to help maximise your seating space.

Anti-Fatigue Mat

Have you ever noticed your feet aching after standing for a long time? It may not even be that you were standing for too long, but rather than your feet are fatigued by the hard surface. Granted, comfortable and supportive shoes can help this tremendously, but you also need an anti-fatigue mat. I used a standing desk for some time without one (despite knowing one was recommended) and once I did purchase one, the difference was incredible and increased my comfortable standing time.

When choosing a mat, you of course want to keep within a budget but don’t fall for buying a cheap mat – durability is key when you’re stepping all over it! There are a couple mats I recommend.

Imprint CulumusKitchen Mat Nantucket Series

Imprint Anti-Fatigue Nantucket Series 20-Inch by 36-Inch Comfort Mat, Cinnamon

Step stool

If you ever pay attention to how you stand, you might notice that you occasionally change positions. As stated previously, good posture while standing is important. A step stool can add some variety when placing one foot on it, taking the pressure off of the parts of your feet that bear the majority of your weight.

Foam Roller

Foam rollers can be used a countless number of ways for exercises, but one that you might not have thought of is using one to stand on while at your desk. Obviously, this isn’t something you’d do for long periods of time, but like the step stool, it can offer some rest, and even provide you with a bit of a work out.

There are several kinds of foam rollers, but you want high-quality and extra firm ones (so that they don’t get out of shape after standing on them). Below are a few that I recommend, all which are extra-firm and durable, but range from smooth to rigid surfaces. The prices of these also vary by size, but for the purpose of using at a standing desk, I selected the longer variation.

Mini Elliptical Trainer

The problem with most elliptical trainers is that they take up a ton of room, which offices generally don’t have. The other problem with traditional elliptical trainers is that you have to step away from your desk in order to use them. And while stepping away from time to time is definitely recommended, a mini elliptical trainer offers the advantage of being able to move and work simultaneously.

Supportive Chair

Wait, a chair for a standing desk? Yes, and let me explain why. One of the biggest misconceptions (I think) that people have about standing desks is that they stand at them all the time. But from what I’ve found, this isn’t good either. Our bodies aren’t meant to do that (especially with very little movement). The solution is a combination of sitting and standing, thus your standing desk should allow for both.

There is actually a science to what to look for in the perfect office chair

What To Look For In The Perfect Office Chair

It is absolutely crucial to pick the right office chair. The decision over which to buy shouldn’t be taken lightly, especially if you’re going to be spending several hours of each day sitting on the…

Read More, and it’s something to take seriously, as you’ll be spending a lot of time in it. Upon searching for a chair to recommend, I discovered the Air Grid chair by Office Star, pictured above. And it just so happens to be the first on Matt Smith’s list of the best office chairs you can buy right now

Footrest

Whether you’re sitting, or standing a footrest, much like a footstool, can be useful to ease the pressure off your feet. Do you need both a footrest and a footstool? Probably not. I recommend you decide which one fits your needs better.

Stand-Up Chair

This is a fairly new concept, but a very exciting one. Currently there are a few ideas or products available, but not a highly competitive market. One that caught my eye, is called the Standing Task Chair and was actually a Kickstarter project. Unfortunately, its funding was unsuccessful and they haven’t revealed where they plan to go. But the product is great and revolutionary. I encourage all standing desk owners to keep an eye our for what happens next with the Standing Task Chair.

Adirondack Form and Function — Points to Consider

Due to its reclined nature, Adirondack chairs are meant for relaxing and dozing.

Adirondack chairs are close to the ground, so people with back or leg problems may have issues getting down that far.

Ideally, you should pair an Adirondack chair with an ottoman or footstool for good leg support.

Getting out of an Adirondack chair isn’t as easy as getting out of a regular chair.

The deeply reclined shape makes your lap an ideal resting place for pets or small children.

The wide arms are great for balancing drinks or small plates.

Adirondack chairs often feature contoured seats and backs for better support.

Adirondack chairs can also be paired with cushions and headrest pillows for extra comfort.

Step 2: Choose the Right Materials for Your Adirondack Chair

Adirondack chairs are available in a variety of materials — teak, aluminium, HDPE lumber, and injection molded plastic are all available. When it comes to choosing the right materials you’ll want to take several factors into account:

It tends to be inexpensive.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) Lumber as a Material for Adirondack Chairs

HDPE is a synthetic resin for building solid, high-quality, durable outdoor furniture. Its cost is offset by the luxury, comfort, and resilience it provides.

HDPE Lumber — Points to Consider

It is easy to maintain, needing just a damp cloth and dish soap.

Medium weight, HDPE is sturdy and resistant to wind. It can stay outside all year-round.

HDPE is highly durable and completely resistant to wind, water, and rust.

Comfortable, stylish, and luxurious with a high-quality, strong, and sturdy construction.

HDPE is infinitely recyclable and is often made from recycled milk jugs.

Classic Folding Adirondack

We recommend placing Adirondack chairs at least two to three feet apart. You will also want to have three to four feet of space in front of an Adirondack chair to make it easy to get into and out of. A patio or porch around feet square can comfortably hold three to four Adirondack chairs.

Adirondack Chair Heights

You will want to pay close attention to the height of an Adirondack chair — shorter people will want lower seat heights to make getting into and out of the chair easier, while taller people may want a taller seat height.

Our range of POLYWOOD Adirondack chairs features seat heights between 1and 1inches. We even have a mini Adirondack with a 1inch seat height that’s perfect for kids.

If you’re around 5’ to 5’5”, we recommend a 1inch seat height. People between 5’6” and 5’10” will be most comfortable with a 1inch seat height, while taller people will probably want 1inches.

Step — Choose the Right Color of Adirondack Chair

If you’re buying a teak or aluminium adirondack chair, you’re likely to be limited in your choice of colors and finishes. If you’re going for injection moulded plastic, or, even better, HDPE lumber, you will have plenty of choices.

These materials are available in a wide variety of tones. From beautiful grays, browns, greens, and other earth colors, through to vibrant hues of red, yellow, blue, and more that add some real visual distinction.

You can stay with a modern look by choosing black or white, or bring in a sense of the natural with brown or green. side tables and other pieces to create a complete set of beautiful furniture.

The Bottom Lin

Essential for classical.

Ideal for both the professional and the student guitarist, the Cordoba foot stool is an invaluable accessory at home, in the studio or on the road. The solid-wood design features four adjustable heights and folds flat for portability. The Cordoba foot stool is an attractive and essential addition to the serious guitarist’s gear collection.

Extra Wide Non-Slip Footrests and Wide Traction Tips

Another one is Flybar with its model called Maverick Walking Stilts for Kids; you won’t believe it is made out of metal given the extremely light weight and with the super big and wide footrests with an anti-slip treatment for safety and huge traction-tips, broader than any other recreational stilts available today.

Making for a more stable experience indoors as well as outdoors. These stilts are easily adjustable to achieve the best possible fit and you can do it in no time to accommodate your growing child reaching a maximum height of 4inches.

The usual huge rubber bottoms that won’t mark your floor and will give you extreme stability indoors and outdoors. A Recliner office chair consists of

The Rise of  Reclining Office Chairs in the Modern Offices

Here is a question. Why do we need an office recliner chair when we are already having lots of other chairs and work desks at our offices?

You see, as an office employee or worker, you might be spending maximum time, sitting on chairs! In fact, we all spend most of our times by sitting on various types of chairs. hours at the office, then when we come back to home, again on the different type of chair or sofa. Again, when we are doing some work at home, we sit on another chair. Which means that, let’s assume if we sleep around hours, then we spend almost 1hours on chairs.

So, a chair plays a vital role in our lives, whether it’s a plastic chair, wooden chair or office chair. When we come back from office to home, you feel tired and sometimes may experience neck pains, back pains and even leg pains.

These kinds of illnesses may be very well attributed to the sitting position and the type of chairs we use at our offices. Is your office chair has an excellent support to your back, neck. Does it have a footrest that provides you relaxing feeling? We tend to ignore these things and end up with lots of pains and restlessness because of long working hours.

If you are an office executive, you don’t want just to work sitting in the same position, but also want to relax by taking shorts burst of a break. Here is where the reclining office chairs come into the picture.

With a reclining desk chair, you need not worry about your poise of sitting and say goodbye to body pain problems that used to arise because of wrong sitting position. You can sit and work freely because of its ergonomic design and features that make you’re sitting much more comfortable than your regular office chair. A reclining chair is not only a great thing to have at the office, but you can have a one at your home too. Nowadays home-offices are converging, and many people work from home or even do lots of home-based work such as freelancers.

Because of the rich features and ergonomic factors, recliner office chairs have become quite popular among office executive and are fast occupying office cabins by replacing the regular office chairs. You might even consider a rocking recliner in case you want the additional movement while you are relaxing on it.

To ease your search for the good reclining chairs, we created a shortlisted collection of the best picks which is the result of our comprehensive research, careful comparison of features, price, and specs. Below are the best recliners for the money that we shortlisted and their individual reviews follow in subsequent sections.

Pull Quote

To narrow the focus, we set aside stools aimed mainly for kids. (We might tackle that as a separate guide eventually.) The stools we tested will generally work just fine for kids, but they’re intended for use by adults.

We also didn’t consider 3-step stools. If you frequently need to reach higher spaces, a dedicated step ladder is going to more useful and versatile in the long run because it’s tall enough for cleaning gutters, trimming branches and other tasks. If you really want a 3-step stool, our top pick also comes in a 3-step version. We didn’t test it, but it seems like a logical way to go for a height upgrade.

A higher option

The same great build quality as our main pick with an added step so you can reach higher.

As mentioned earlier, we focused on slightly lower stools for this guide, as they were the most versatile for the largest swath of users. But there are certainly uses for 3-step stools that may apply to you, especially if you regularly do work on the outside of your house. If you need some extra height, the Gorilla Easy Step also comes in a 3-step version with a height of 36”. We didn’t test 3-step stools for this guide for reasons outlined previously, but it uses the same basic form and materials as the 2-step and is made by the same people.

If you need a higher weight rating than the Gorilla’s 22lb. ANSI II certification, the Rubbermaid EZ Fold’s ANSI IA 300 lb. rating will support you around the house.

The competition

We used the Kik Step in a high school science classroom for the last year, and its incredible durability and ability to get literally kicked around a room makes it ideal for this kind of institutional use, and we can report it’s done very well under heavy use by teachers and high school kids, who are generally not known for treating school property gently. That makes the Kik Step an interesting alternative for very specific usage scenarios.

This stool from Werner is basically a very small stepladder which lacks anywhere to brace yourself despite the high weight rating.

This mahogany stool from Cosco was too heavy (more than 1lbs.) to carry around easily. As user DoctorLA put it, “Looks nice but the metal ones work a lot better.”

This 2-step stool from Cosco seemed like a good candidate, since some sites listed it as having a weight limit of 22lbs. However, in reality it is only rated at 200 lbs., not enough to meet our criteria.

This molded plastic stool from Rubbermaid has a generous weight rating of 300 lbs., but it’s bulky and doesn’t fold up, which would make it difficult to store.

BR Plastics offers this small stool, comparable in portability to the Adams, but it has nowhere to brace your feet on the top step, and suffered from enough user complaints about fingers getting pinched while folding/unfolding that it didn’t make our shortlist.
