Paraffin wax

The most common and oldest man-made type of candle wax, it offers a really good scent throw. With a high melting point it has a good stability as it burns, but if burnt frequently you may notice black soot marks on the inside of a glass candle holder.

Soy wax

Soy is a vegetable and a renewable source; it burns cleanly with no toxins and little to no soot. Soy candles burn longer and cooler than their paraffin counterparts, and have an excellent scent throw. Wax spills can be cleaned up by simply using warm water and soap.

Diffusers

Consisting of reed sticks and an oil and alcohol solution, diffusers deliver a constant fragrance that’s perfect for greeting you when you come home. They’re ideal for the summer months as they produce no heat but warmth helps increase the fragrance intensity; just keep them out of reach of children and pets.

For the ultimate fragranced experience, place the candle in a central part of the room to allow the scent to distribute evenly.

Choose a flat heat resistant surface to avoid accidents.

Trim the wick to about 5mm before lighting to avoid enlarged flame and sooting and maximise the burn time.

The first burn is the most important. Allow the wax to melt across the entire surface before extinguishing the flame to prevent ‘tunnelling’.

When spraying linen, hold 20cm away and only on washable fabric.

Place the reeds in the bottle and leave them for a minute to absorb the oils.

Invert the reeds to place the ‘dry’ ends in the bottle so that the saturated end is exposed.

Allow 2hours for the fragrance to fill the room or invert the reeds every few hours to speed up the process.

How to Make Candles

As we’ve demonstrated, there are plenty of candle types that you can create in your own kitchen. Here, we’ll show you how to make a basic soy candle. You can take the same basic ingredients, tweak them slightly, and create your own customized recipe.

Prep Your Wax and Container

Now, let’s prep your materials to get your candle wax ready. Take your soy wax and put it into your double boiler on your kitchen stove to melt. Fill the bottom pot with water and the top with the soy wax and turn burner onto medium heat. Stir the wax with your spatula, making sure you break up any chunks.

While the wax is melting, take your wick and glue the end to the bottom of your glass container. Allow glue to dry, which will keep your wick in place as your pour your wax.

Customize Your Candle Mixture

Once your wax melts, take your preferred essential oil and stir into your mixture at a ratio of oz per pound of wax. If you’d like to change up the color of your candle wax, stir in chunks of non-toxic crayons.

Once your ingredients are melted and mixed, let it cool to 130-140 degrees Fahrenheit. Check the mixture with your thermometer to ensure it reaches the correct temperature.

Prep Your Pour

Now that your wax mixture is cooled to the correct temperature, it’s time to pour it into your jar. Hold the wick upright with one hand and pour the mixture out of the pan with the other. Fill up ¾ of the jar with the hot wax mixture.

To keep the wick upright, tie its end to the pen and set it across the opening of your jar.

Selling Your Homemade Candles Online

You’ve got the recipe for success — now it’s time to figure out how to sell your soy candles (or other homemade candles).

Like many business-to-consumer businesses, one of the most lucrative mediums to sell your products is online. You can use multiple digital platforms, like social media and your own ecommerce site, to reach potential customers around the world.

Get the free reading list

While every digital medium won’t be a successful sales platform for every merchant, here are a few places entrepreneurs can try to help them get started.

Although the following list doesn’t cover every channel merchants can explore for their fledgeling business, these are some solid options to help you marketing your business online.

Instagram: Many lifestyle brands how found great success building a sizeable following on Instagram. Curate a feed of beautiful images related to your brand, stage photos of you candles to show off to customers, and reach a larger audience. You can also use Instagram to reach out to brand evangelists and provide a behind-the-scenes peek at how you make your candles.

Pinterest: Home décor is a major category for Pinterest users, and is one of the largests platforms customers use to find brands and products. So, it’s wise for homemade candle merchants to consider Pinterest as a pillar in their marketing strategy.

Snapchat: As another highly visual platform, Snapchat is another viable option for maker merchants. As one of the fastest-growing social media platforms with more than 200 million users, DIY hustlers can use the medium to market to an increasing audience.

Giveaways and Contests: As part of a social/content marketing strategy, you can use some of your merchandise as prizes in a series of giveaways and contests. Not only can these contests help you gain followers and build brand awareness, but you also have the opportunity to show off how well your products work.

Email Marketing: Deliver your message (as well as promos, discounts, and other brand news) right to your customers’ inboxes.

Selling Your Homemade Candles Offline

Although selling online is a viable avenue for merchants, don’t be afraid to try selling IRL.

Homemade candles are compact and travel well — which makes them ideal for selling on the go. Your sweet-smelling home decor items are ideal for displaying in market booths and pop-up shops and gives merchants the opportunity to get in-person feedback directly from potential customers.

Still not sold on selling in person? Going IRL for sales has a number of other benefits, including:

Getting direct feedback: If you’re eager to improve your products (or just dying to hear what customers think), selling in person is a great way to do it. Meet your target customers face-to-face, address their pain points, and get ideas for potential new products.

Discover wholesale opportunities: Ready to scale your business? Or looking to explore selling B2B? Markets and fairs are ideal events to meet wholesale buyers and establish a foundation for such a relationship.

Build your online following and email subscribers: Whether you’re aiming to grow your social audience or build your enewsletter list, use pop-up shops and markets to connect online. When visitors show up at your booth or shop, ask them to subscribe to your email list or follow your branded social channels for new products, discounts, and giveaways.

Networking and inspiration: Connecting with fellow makers and entrepreneurs is also a major part of the draw for festivals, markets, and fairs. Meeting other merchants can inspire you with new ideas and help you come up with new solutions to shared problems.

Although physical sales require different skills than sitting at your desk, a little know-how and the right tools can make it simpler to make sales on the go. Use a mobile point-of-sale system like Shopify POS to help you set up your shop or booth at your next flea and farmer’s market, craft fair, and/or maker fair, and keep transactions quick and simple.

How to Use Home Fragrance in your Home

Scented Candles: After burning your candle, it is advised that your trim the wick to approximately half a centimetre in height. This will control the flame when you choose to burn the candle again and also avoid sooting. To maximise the length of time your candle will burn for, always allow the entire top surface to transform into liquid wax before you extinguish the flame. This will prevent something called “tunnelling” which causes wasted wax to collect on the sides of the candle.

Instead of blowing out your scented candle, we would always advise that you snuff it out to prevent the wick from smouldering and producing a smoky scent.

Although you may want to save your scented candle for a special occasion, try not to leave your candle unused for a long period time. Over time, a candle may lose pungency of fragrance as the scent begins to sweat out of the wax. Store your scented candles at room temperature and clean any dust or dirt which may have collected on top of your candle with an unscented wipe to preserve a fresh fragrance.

Room Diffusers: How many reed sticks you choose to use at any given time is down to personal preference and how much scent you want to fill your home. If you wish to create a heavy scent, ideal for a smaller room such as a bathroom, we would recommend using around four to five reed sticks. If you want to create a lighter aroma and fill a bigger room with a subtle fragrance, remove sticks accordingly until you reach the right scent level for you.

Warmer rooms such as bedrooms and living rooms will tend to diffuse quicker, so if you want to release a scent quickly, place your diffuser on top of or near to a covered radiator and refresh the scent by turning the reeds.

It’s time to replace your reed sticks when they become saturated with dust and lose their smell. Always replace your reed sticks when using a new refresher oil too as the old ones will become clogged up from the previous oil which was used.

ZERO Animal Products!

Most relevant for vegan candle lovers, soy candles provide all the scent and warmth, without the use of any animal ingredients. While beeswax is a highly contested ingredient in the vegan community, very strict vegans tend to avoid it as procuring beeswax can disrupt a bee colony or cause harm to individual bees, even though the wax itself is not an animal ingredient.

With so many options for plant-based wax, including soy, the potential disruption to the bees is unnecessary, so very strict vegans (and those who simply are avoiding bee products) have plant-based waxes to choose from.

Plant-based and Natural

In addition to being vegan-friendly, soy wax is a green choice for homemade candles.

Soy wax is made from soybeans, a natural, renewable, and biodegradable crop grown in many regions by local farmers. Other wax options like paraffin are made from petroleum, a material that may contain carcinogens that might be released into the air during burn time.

A greener choice for the environment, purchasing soy wax is also supporting agriculture and farmers, instead of providing funds to producers of non-renewables.

Soy Candles Last Longer

When you pour the time and effort into making candles at home, you want to be sure they’ll last long enough to be worth the work. Choosing a soy wax means you won’t burn through your candles as quickly, as soy candles burn cooler and therefore generally last 30-50% longer than a paraffin candle.

Number of Candles

How many candles are you hoping to make from a single kit?

If you’re looking to have a rainy day activity on hand to do with your children, you’ll probably need fewer candles – and therefore fewer materials – than if you’re searching for a kit that will allow you to make lots of candles.

Remember that making more candles requires more ingredients and materials, so a kit that allows you to make many candles instead of reusing a few tins will cost considerably more than one that covers just the basics.

However, if you’re hoping to make lots of candles with your kit, purchasing one that includes enough for a large volume will ensure that you don’t run out of materials mid-project, and you can save yourself the hassle and downtime of buying more materials “a la carte.”

Color

The color of a candle can complement the decor of a room, or give a hint about the scent of the candle – a red candle might signify apple, while a yellow candle is perfect for a bright lemon fragrance.

Like fragrance, most kits come with a sampling of many different colors. If you require a certain color, you may be able to make a special request to the makers of the kits or opt for a kit that includes a single color in it.

Find super-cheap local bargains

The results can be powerful, such as this from MoneySaver Jen_Jen1985: “Had been looking for a double buggy – most ended up selling for around Ј40. I found one via the Local Deals Finder and ended up winning it for Ј1.24.”

Plus this from Kernow666: “I got a guy’s huge Ј1,000+ Lego Technic collection, which he was forced to sell as he was moving in with his girlfriend, for Ј175.”

For all the latest deals, guides and loopholes – join the 10m who get it. Don’t miss out

Fill in the search box and tick ‘sold listings’ on the left-hand grey bar. It’ll come up with a list of prices similar auctions have fetched. Sort by “Lowest price” and don’t pay more than the average.

Snoop on sellers’ history – use a ‘best offers’ tool to see if they’ll do a deal

Some sellers say they’ll consider ‘best offers’ on buy-it-now items. This is where you propose a figure, then they mull it over and tell you if it’s a goer.

There’s a loophole to see which prices they’ve already accepted, and lower your best offer accordingly.

Do a search, select advanced options and tick to show only best offer items. Once you’ve found an auction that accepts offers, enter the seller’s username into Goofbid’s Best Offer History tool.

It should show all the items that seller’s accepted best offers on, including the average reduction they give. If you see that they typically accept 30% below the listed price, bingo – you’ve a clear idea of how much to offer.

Don’t pay for info

Other sellers flog mobile phone Sim unlocking codes for as much as Ј10, when you can do this for nowt (see Mobile Phone Unlocking).

To our great distaste, links to this site have been sold to the highest bidder. In the past, people have sold bank charge reclaiming template letters, as well as links to tools from the site.

Use Google to check exactly what you’re bidding for. If it’s just “information”, you’ll usually find the same elsewhere for free.

Win auctions with sniping tools

Spotted something you want to buy? The last thing you should do is bid on it.

Bid early and competing buyers will bid back, forcing the price upwards. Instead, sneakily win auctions by swooping in and delivering a killer bid about seconds before the deadline, leaving no time for others to fight back.

Sniping websites automatically bid on your behalf, usually in the last 10ish seconds. item number and the maximum price you’re willing to pay. This also stops you getting carried away in a last minute bidding war.

For a free auction sniper, try Gixen, which is rated by forumites.

Think twice about using sniping sites to bid on items you’ve got your heart set on, as sometimes they can play up. wrong, as you willingly gave your password to a third party.

Find auctions closing in the dead of night

Listings that finish at anti-social times often get fewer bids, so sell for less.

To locate auctions that finish in the dead of night, use BayCrazy’s Night Time Bargain search.

Don’t fancy burning the midnight oil? Combine this trick with auto-bidding tools that bid on your behalf while you’re deep in the land of nod.

So it’s a good idea for newbies to learn the ropes by bidding on a few small items, such as books or pants.

This way, you can learn how the bidding system works before graduating to more costly wares.

Take feedback with a dose of scepticism

Think twice before purchasing expensive items from a seller with zero feedback. Also ensure you read their feedback from selling, not just buying (click on their username, then ‘see all feedback’).

Remember feedback’s useful, but not infallible. One thing to watch for is traders flogging a few things for 10p each to build feedback, and suddenly listing iPhones at Ј500 a pop.

For all the latest deals, guides and loopholes – join the 10m who get it. Don’t miss out

Know your consumer rights

This applies to both new and second-hand items. It should be easy to tell if someone’s a trader – look for “registered as a business seller” on their profile.

With private sellers it’s caveat emptor, or ‘let the buyer beware’. Buyers’ only rights under law are that the product is fairly described and the owner has the right to sell it. There’s little legal comeback.

Your right to change your mind within 1days

Buy from a business seller using an auction or the buy-it-now button, and Consumer Contracts Regulations also apply.

Under the regulations, buyers who want to return something they’ve bought online – even if they’ve just changed their mind – have 1working days after the date of delivery to notify the seller. You’ll be able to get a refund for the item plus the cost of the least expensive delivery option. If you chose a more expensive delivery, you’ll have to cover the difference.

Blow Torch

Blow torches are traditionally used for the finishing touches on desserts and dishes. They are relatively small and light weight and are ideal for browning meringues, caramelising desserts and crisping meats. Blowtorches have a refillable cylinder so they can be used time and time again.

Cheese

There are many gadgets and accessories available to make serving cheese easier. A cheese wire will cut cheese with accuracy and ease. A cheese wire will have a small handle at each end to keep your fingers safe when in use, or it can be part of a cheese board. A cheese planer slides across the surface of the cheese giving you slices which are perfect for sandwiches. Cheese bakers are used for baking Camembert and other soft round cheeses in the oven. Normally made from ceramic, they will have a lid and they can also be used to store the cheese in the fridge containing most of the cheese’s distinct aromas!

Drawer Inserts

Inserts and trays for holding your cutlery inside your drawer are great for organising and keeping together sets of cutlery and small utensils. Getting the perfect fit can be achieved by measuring and buying a suitable organiser, however some drawer inserts are available that can be expanded in one direction to fit the width of the drawer. These drawer inserts are generally constructed from wood or moulded plastic, both can be wiped clean.

Herb & Spice

Herbs and spices are used every day in the modern kitchen and need to be stored and dispensed. Ground herbs can be kept in jars in a rack or carousel and can be refilled and relabelled as required. Spice grinders are small mills that can be used specifically for grinding your own fresh spice mixes and storing them yourself. Herb cutters can strip can chop herbs for you to collect and store for a short time. ‘S’ shaped hooks can be used for looping one end over a structure and the other for hooking on a towel apron or utensil. Other pan and utensil hooks can also connect via different ways to an existing rack, with particular hooks for that rack like a swivel hook.

Nut Cracker

Nut crackers are used to break through the shell of nuts to be able to get to the nut itself. The two handled tool is designed to squeeze the nut where to two handles meet, there is usually a grip here too that will hold the nut in place.

Pantry Bags

Pantry bags are linen bags ideal for keeping your onions, potatoes and other root vegetables out of strong light and keeping cool in your larder. The bags will be sturdy and thick to allow the vegetables to be in the dark, this prevents them from spouting roots or eyelets to reseed. Keeping these foods cool are essential to prevent the vegetable softening.

Fresh home-made pasta is always a joy to make when you have the right tools for the job. A pasta machine will roll perfectly sized pasta to your desired thickness ready for you to turn into your favourite pasta. The thin rolled pasta can then be cut using a pasta cutter to a desired shape or pressed into Ravioli.

Pot Racks

Pot racks can hang from either the ceiling or the wall. They will have many hooks on them used for hanging saucepans and other pots with handles. The racks can be just a single line or several in a complete rack. Hooks can be added later if more are required. Racks are generally made from a strong metal and sometimes wood and come in a variety of finishes.

Roasting

Roasting bags are ideal for cooking meats and marinated food in the oven, after marinating meat and adding other ingredients, the bags can be sealed and put on a baking tray. This will keep everything together whilst roasting. Also for a roast dinner the bags will help crisp up the meat and cook through perfectly.

Skewers

Skewers are ideal for summer barbeques and evening treats. You can skewer on meats and vegetables or seafood and place across your barbecue or oven grill to create an interesting meal. Skewers can be made from wood for one time use or metal for use time and time again. Metal skewers tend to have flattened side to help stop the meat and vegetables from spinning around when you turn the skewers over.

Storage

Correct food storage is essential to avoid waste and mess, especially after something has been opened but not fully used. This applies to liquids and food alike. Freshness is a key factor and keeping bacteria at bay is also very essential. Plastic tubs with seals and clipped lids work perfectly as the lids are safe and secure and even leak proof for liquids. Check each product for dishwasher and microwave safety as they may not always be suitable.
