The Insider Pick
The best can openers will last you for years or even decades. If you need a new one, the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener is our pick because it requires no more effort than depressing a lever to open any can. The exterior of the can and the cutting blade do not make contact with the food, and it leaves smooth edges.
For over half a century, can openers have been an essential part of every kitchen. Yet, from your dollar store find to high-end options at department stores, there are a lot of terrible can openers on the market. Fortunately, with a little bit of research, you can find a device that is durable, sanitary, and simple to use.
Most can openers also function as bottle cap openers, and there are a few models that do even more than that, including opening jars. If you are looking for a device that will serve a variety of purposes, take a closer look at the Kuhn Rikon and P-5can openers.
As part of our research into can openers, we evaluated the ratings and experiences of experts and users alike. We chose our top picks based on their track record of accurate cutting, reliable performance, and price.
Although the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener is tops on our list of the best can openers, the following slides explain why you should consider the Made in USA Can Opener, the OXO SteeL Can Opener, the Kuhn Rikon Auto Safety Master Opener, and the P-3Can Opener and P-5Can Opener.
Why you’ll love it: When you want to open a can with minimal mess, effort, or chance for contamination, the Hamilton Beach 76606ZA Smooth Touch Can Opener is a smart choice.
When you look at the marketing photos put out by Hamilton Beach of the Smooth Touch Can Opener in action, you may wonder why they are using a can opener for a pop-top can. Most people do not clean the exteriors of their cans. Yet, these areas get quite dirty. When you use the pop top, the outside of the can is likely to make contact with the food, which increases the chance of contamination. The Hamilton Beach can opener is designed to keep your food free of contaminants.
The can opener cuts along the side of the can instead of the top, so the lid won’t fall into the food. The blade of the can opener, which can collect harmful microbes, doesn’t make contact with the food, either.
To operate the Smooth Touch Can Opener, you just depress the large ergonomic lever until your can has made a complete rotation. Then, you remove the top part. The cut leaves smooth edges on both pieces of the can.
Two popular expert review sites rated the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener as the best electric can opener on the market.
Consumer Search rated this model highly because of its unique side-cutting that leaves smooth edges and the fact that the blade doesn’t come in contact with your food, which is ideal for hygienic reasons. also liked that it left smooth edges, works with cans of all sizes, and is user-friendly. However, reviewers found it was hard to use the lid to strain the can’s contents due to the sidecut. gave the 76606ZA five stars. Buyers appreciated that the top of the can was cut off on the side as close to the top as possible. With other side-cutters, the cut is too low, and liquid from the can may spill out.
Buyers also liked that the magnet holds the can in place securely for an excellent cut. There were some complaints that the cord is too short, but this is likely because many users didn’t realize that most of the 26-inch cord is stored within the unit itself. You just pull it out.
Requires electricity, might have trouble with thick-rimmed cans
Made in USA
Why you’ll love it: The Made in USA Can Opener is an American classic that has been in production since 195and provides efficient and consistent cutting.
For decades, the U.S. Swing-A-Way company dominated the can opening industry. Then, in 2008, the company moved production to China. The result was a less expensive but lower quality can opener. The John J. Steuby Company made parts for the Swing-A-Way, and when Swing-A-Way was sold, the company started creating its own can openers: the EZ-Duz-It and Made in USA Can Openers.
Though we didn’t find any complaints about this model rusting, we recommend wiping your can opener down with a cloth and hot water or vinegar to clean it. Also, the seller, Peaks Technology LLC, claims it has replaced all the defective openers that have been brought to its attention in the last four years — no matter when they were purchased.
The Sweethome listed the Made in USA Can Opener as the second best can opener you can buy. The reviewers report that the Made in USA Can Opener is “virtually identical” to the site’s number-one-choice, the
EZ-Duz-It can opener. gave the Made in USA Can Opener five stars. Many of them were almost embarrassed by how much they enjoyed this can opener’s performance. Opens Without Sharp Edges
In every kitchen utensil draw there should be a can opener, it is a must have. Many people have trouble in finding the right and the best can opener to suit them as they come in many different styles, shapes and sizes.
Opening cans with a blunt tool or a one that keeps jumping off the lid can be very dangerous as the lid and can could become very sharp which makes it very easy to cut your hand. To avoid this happening I would recommend a safety can opener or a battery operated can opener. This is basically what it says, it cuts along the seam with no effort and when it’s finished there are no sharp edges on the lid or the can which means fingers are safe.
This doesn’t just have to be used in the kitchen they are useful to take anywhere with you. Anyone planning on a picnic to the park or beach the safety motorized can opener will easily fit into your hamper or cool box, it is an essential item to take with you if you are going camping. It is small enough to fit in your suitcase to take on holiday with you especially if you are self catering.
Can openers are a must have, however if you haven’t chosen a good quality top tin opener they can be very frustrating to use. It is always worthwhile to make sure you invest in a can openers for arthritis that will last a good few years rather than a few months.
My old can opener is slow and stuttering, it stalls out on dents, and the cutting wheel is shamefully gunked up. Yet I’ve always turned a blind eye to its inadequacies. Well, no more. I’ve discovered a new breed of can openers that skirts all of the annoying pitfalls of regular manual openers.
Of course, with new designs come new challenges. Smooth-edge openers attach quite differently from regular can openers. All of the models tested for this review came with instructions that were worth taking the time to read. Our top choices were, in part, selected for their greater ease of attachment. After a few uses, attaching and detaching did become second nature. Also, if you’re in the habit of pressing the lid into the can to drain off liquid, well, that’s not possible, so you might keep your old standby for canned tuna.
The short learning curve to operating these new openers is worth the greater ease of use (and the Band-Aids that they’ll save you over time). Heck, they almost make me wish more good things came in a can.
What to look for
After testing 1models, we don’t recommend buying just any smooth-edge can opener. Our favorites had knobs positioned parallel to the side of the can, like a traditional can opener. Turning the knob from the can’s side significantly reduces strain to your wrist and elbow, and on most models, this design allows you to see if you’re properly attaching the opener. Some models come with pincers so that you can remove the lid without even touching it, but with the can’s smooth edges, we didn’t find the pincers necessary.
In addition to the models discussed below, we tried the following smooth-edge openers (listed alphabetically): Kuhn Rikon’s Deluxe Safety LidLifter, Slim Safety LidLifter, and Safety LidLifter; Leifheit Safety Can Opener; Tupperware E-Series Can Opener; and Zyliss Safe Edge Can Opener.
This opener has an ergonomic design that helps reduce strain. The grip is soft and the tension of turning the knob among the least forced (on par with Cuisipro). It’s also easy to attach.
This model opened cans with the least amount of resistance. The large, soft-grip knob and thick, no-slip handles make it easy to grip. Although you can’t see where the cutting wheel should align because of the design, the Oxo logo on the handle helps guide positioning.
This opener is easy to attach and nicely balanced. It takes more effort to turn than the Rosle and Oxo, but, compared with other safe-cut openers, this is one of the best.
After three years of researching can openers, speaking with cookbook authors, and opening 12cans with 2can openers, we think the EZ-Duz-It is the best can opener for most people. The EZ-Duz-It is an inexpensive, no-frills opener that gets the job done every time. It securely latches onto cans and cuts through their lids with ease. And since it’s so durable, we’re confident it will last you for decades to come.
Who should get this
A good can opener is a necessary tool in any kitchen for prepping tins. If you have an opener that struggles to latch onto cans, has a difficult-to-turn knob, or has dull or rusty blades that fail to cut the entire way around, it’s probably time for an upgrade.
How we picked and tested
We tested eight can openers (including conventional, safety, and electric models) for our 201update.
A good can opener doesn’t need to be complicated or decked out with fancy features, but it should easily and reliably open cans of all sizes. “Above all, I want a can opener that works every time—I don’t want it to slip as I open the can, and I want it to cut through the lid cleanly,” Emma Christensen, former recipe editor at The Kitchn, told us. Matthew Amster-Burton, the co-host of
Spilled Milk, agreed: “Fundamentally, the qualities you want in a can opener are reliability (not falling off the can or leaving an uncut segment), comfort, and ‘leverage,’ i.e., a powerful mechanical advantage.” Most of the pros we spoke to recommended getting a traditional can opener that cuts through the top of the can (that is, not a safety model), because traditional openers last for decades.
The handle should feel good in the hand, and the knob should turn easily. The ideal can opener cuts cleanly with little effort. A narrow, simple design ensures that it doesn’t take up too much space or get caught in a cluttered kitchen drawer.
During testing, we took note of any glaring comfort or hand-strength issues, and how easily the openers latched onto cans.
We also looked at electric openers, which come in both standard and safety styles. Such models generally have triangular blades, rather than round ones, that stay in one place while the can itself spins, as well as a magnetic lid latch. But electric openers hog a lot of counter or storage space. “I don’t think electric can openers make sense unless you have a medical condition that makes it difficult to use a manual can opener,” Amster-Burton told us. “They take up more space, require an outlet, and have more parts that can fail.”
Ideally, we wanted can openers that cut well, operated easily, and felt comfortable to hold. During testing, we took note of any glaring comfort or hand-strength issues, and how easily the openers latched onto cans. We measured how many full turns of the knob we needed to make to open each can size (or how many seconds for the electric openers), and we evaluated the overall difficulty and comfort level of using each model. We also compared the size and durability of the openers and whether they removed the lid in one try or required multiple attempts. For standing electric models, we tested if they could support the weight of large, 28-ounce cans without toppling over.
For this guide, we tested can openers using common household can sizes.
We tested the openers with the can sizes that home cooks most commonly use: 5-ounce tuna cans, 6-ounce tomato-paste cans, 15.5-ounce bean cans, and 28-ounce whole-plum-tomato cans. For the original version of this review, we tested 60 pounds’ worth of 14.5-ounce cans of veggies and 24-ounce cans of beef stew, which we donated to the Friends of Night People, a shelter that cares for the poor and homeless in Buffalo, New York.
The inexpensive yet durable EZ-Duz-It can opener is a reliable kitchen necessity that will last for decades.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
Many people cite the resulting sharp edges as one of the biggest problems with the EZ-Duz-It can opener. Though we realize it can be annoying to fish a cut lid out of a can, we don’t think that’s a dealbreaker due to this can opener’s efficiency and overall performance. If you want to avoid a loose cut lid altogether and prevent it from falling into the can, we recommend leaving a small section of the lid uncut to create a hinge. Use a butter knife to flip up the lid, remove the contents, and push the lid down into the can to avoid cutting yourself.
To avoid handling a sharp cut lid, we recommend leaving a small section of the can uncut to create a hinge. Use a knife to flip up the lid, remove the contents, and push the lid down into the can to prevent cutting yourself.
Though the knob on the EZ-Duz-It can opener was among the easiest to turn for our testers, anyone with hand-strength issues may still find it difficult to use. If using a manual can opener is difficult for you, we recommend getting our pick for an electric opener, the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener.
For people in need of an electric safety can opener, we recommend the Hamilton Beach Smooth Touch Can Opener.
Care and maintenance
To prevent the risk of cross-contamination, clean your can opener after each use. Since most manual can openers are not dishwasher safe, you should wash yours by hand using a sponge and regular dish soap, and dry it with a dish towel. To clean an electric model, unplug it first and then use a damp cloth to wipe the gears clean (obviously, never submerge an electric can opener in water).
We recommend using Good Housekeeping’s method for removing any rust that develops on the gears of your can opener: Soak the gears in distilled white vinegar overnight and use a brush to scrub it clean.
Conventional can openers
We liked the knob on the OXO Good Grips Soft-Handled Can Opener, which was comfortable to hold while turning, but in a couple of our tests this opener left a small piece of the lid attached to the can. That said, several people on our staff have owned this can opener for almost years.
The knob of the Amco Swing-A-Way Portable Can Opener (now manufactured in China) was easier to turn than those of the OXO models we tested, but this opener had trouble removing the entire lid from some of the cans in our tests.
The Amco Swing-A-Way Easy Crank Can Opener performed admirably in our tests, but we think it would be difficult for some people to operate. It also takes up more space in a drawer.
Electric can openers
We liked the portability of the Bartelli Soft Edge Automatic Electric Can Opener, but it couldn’t open 6-ounce cans, and we had difficulty determining when it had completely removed the top. It also requires four AA batteries, which aren’t included.
The West Bend Electric Can Opener (Metallic) performed well in our tests, opening cans in seven seconds or less. But although it provides the same opening power as our top electric pick, it costs more yet offers no added benefits.
The Hamilton Beach Classic Chrome Heavyweight Can Opener couldn’t support the weight of a 24-ounce can, tipping over when it was attached.
The Hamilton Beach OpenStation Can Opener didn’t cut cans as effectively as our top electric pick.
In our tests, the Proctor Silex Extra-Tall Can Opener did well, but it didn’t perform as consistently as our top electric choice.
While the Handy Can Opener worked decently enough in our tests, we ruled it out because it took about three times as long to open our cans as the fastest model we tried; it also requires two AA batteries (which aren’t included).

Ovente Automatic Electric Can Opener Smooth Edge
If you want the best electric can opener that is portable, the Ovente Automatic is the one for you. It comes in two colors, white and red and operates on AA batteries. You simply put this unit over any can and touch a button and the magic will happen. It can fit cans of any size as well since all you need to do is fit this device over a can. You can even operate the Ovente Automatic Can Opener with one hand. We like the fact that it kind of smoothes out the sharp edges of the lid so it is harder to cut yourself while throwing the lid away. There is a built in magnet that attracts the lid away after the unit makes a complete turn. The device lasts pretty long on the AA batteries and you can use it over 50 times safety without having to restock the batteries. OK, we admit, it is not as smooth and seamless as a countertop electric can opener such as the Hamilton Beach 76607, but this is what you kind of have to expect from a portable device. Countertop and under the cabinet can openers have more stability, cut smoother, and get jammed less often. While we did find the Ovente to jam a few times, it wasn’t so frequent that it became annoying. Its performance relies on your being able to hold the device and the can firmly. Overall, this is a great cheap portable electric can opener and while it is not the best performance, you sacrifice performance for portability.
One of those basic tools you probably don’t pay much attention to, a can opener is a kitchen necessity. But they definitely aren’t all created equal. We take a closer look at the can opener and find out which one should be in your kitchen drawer.
There are a number of different types of can openers to choose from:
Manual openers require elbow grease (some openers more than others), but they do the job well. Two handle arms swing apart to allow you to mount the cutting wheel and cog wheel onto the can, and then you turn the crank to cut. Some manual can openers have a magnet to grab the lid.
Electric openers are simpler and easier than manual, but electric can opener use is dwindling, whether due to counter space issues or lack of stylish options. They are great if you have arthritis, or a lot of cans to open.
Top cutters or lid cutters are the more traditional type, leaving you with a lid that has sharp edges and a can that has smooth edges.
Side cutters were popular at one point, but they are still dangerous. They work the same as a manual, but the sharp edge is transferred to the side of the can rather than the lid.
Heavy-duty can openers mount on the side of a counter and are typically used in commercial food prep or restaurant settings because they can be used on many sizes of cans, including very large bulk cans.
Swiss Army Knife can openers are a variation on the simple, puncture-type openers used by the military, campers, and survivalists. They require a lot of elbow grease to work the blade all the way around the lid, and you end up with a lot of sharp points on both the lid and the can.
The quality of the cutting wheel is the key to a good can opener. The cutting edge should be stainless steel with chrome and carbon content for a harder blade. The carbon content also helps prevent corrosion.
Most can openers are designed right-handed. Side cutters can be easier for left-handed people since it can turn either clockwise or counterclockwise once secured to the top of the can.
Can openers with magnets to hold the lid once it is detached from the can are very handy for keeping your fingers clean and avoiding the need to fish the lid out of the food.
Some safety models have mini-pincers, like pliers, to help you grab the lid easier.
Stainless steel blades are durable and rust-resistant. High-carbon stainless steel blades keep their sharp edge longer.
Look for handles that are coated with non-slip material like silicone or grippy plastic. (Note: prices listed above are approximate and in Canadian dollars)
Can Opening Test
The Swing-A-Way is not as comfortable in the hand as others, but it really dug in and did the job.
The Zyliss beat out the Swing-A-Way in terms of comfort; the handles were long and felt good in the hand. It was very easy to use, and the magnet feature was handy.
OXO’s opener worked well, but the design makes it big and bulky. It might be tough to fit in a utensil drawer.
The Kuhn Rikon was very uncomfortable to use. The handles were too short and our knuckles kept getting hit by the turning crank. OUR TOP PICK
The Swing-A-Way got the budget vote, but we also really liked the Zyliss. Since a can opener is something you only buy once in a while, buying the more expensive Zyliss might be worth it in the long run, especially if you usually open a lot of cans.
